  • The flora of vascular plants and the present vegetation status of Minjujisan and its adjacent regions were investigated from 2000 to 2004, total 27 times. The plant taxa of these areas consist of 764 taxa totally; 172 families, 397 genera, 631 species, 3 subspecies, 105 varieties and 25 forms. There were many useful plants such as 35 taxa of Korean endemics, 12 taxa of rare and endangered plants, and 101 taxa of specially designated plants which were determined by the Ministry of Environment. Furthermore, 46 taxa of naturalized alien plants were also investigated in the boundary of developing areas. The vegetation status of investigated area was comparatively well conserved, but the degree of damage was increasing rapidly by development, deforestation, and tramp which were induced by the disturbances of human beings. Therefore, more active conservation strategies such as expanded designation of conservation area. should be established, and carried out continuously based on the results of long-term monitoring studies.

  • Phytoliths (plant stones) mean all types of mineral deposition formed in or between plant cells. However, most of the researches on the phytoliths so far have been focused on the opaline silica bodies (silicified phytoliths) formed by grasses. Therefore, the phytolith is usually refered to opaline silica body in a narrow sense. Phytoliths are very useful in grass classification, and their usefulness as microfossils is also proved in several other fields, including soil science, paleoecology, and archaeology. Recently attention has been paid to the possibility that they might function as carcinogen. The purpose of this review is to present an overview of the nature and analysis of phytoliths and their applications in botany as well as other fields of sciencess.encess.

  • During the life cycle of plants, water deficit leads to an adverse effect on its growth and development. To increase the productivity of crops, overcoming such drought stress is one of the most important issues in the field of plant study. Among plant hormones, the phytohormone, abscisic acid (ABA) plays a crucial role in eliciting resistance to drought stress as well as in multiple developmental processes, such as seed germination, stomatal closure, and seedling growth. Therefore, further understanding of the ABA-mediated signal transduction pathway in plants is an effective strategy to generate drought-tolerant plants. Posttranslational modification, such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination, is an efficient mechanism for plants to acquire quick adaptation against environmental stress conditions since this process directly affects pre-existing signaling components by modulating protein activity and stability. Here, recent reports on ABA signaling are reviewed, especially focusing on ABA transport, perception, signaling, and posttranslational modification in ABA-mediated cellular responses. Also, we present future prospects on how the control of such a mechanism can be applied to generate useful agricultural crops.

  • Drought stress is one of major environmental stresses in plants; this leads to reduce plant growth and crop yield. In this study, we selected fungal isolate for mitigating drought stress in pepper plants. To do this, 41 fungi were isolated from rhizosphere or bulk soils of various plants in Jeju, Gangneung, Hampyeong in Korea. Out of 41 isolates, we screened two isolates without phytotoxicity through seed germination of tomato, pepper, and cabbage treated with fungal spores; through following plant assay, we selected GL02 as a candidate for alleviating drought stress in pepper plants. As a result of greenhouse test of pepper plants in drought condition, the stomatal conductance on leaves of pepper plants treated with GL02 was increased, whereras the malondialdehyde (MDA) and electrolyte leakage were decreased compared to that in control plants. When stressed plants were rewatered, stomatal conductance of the plants treated with GL02 was increased; the electrolyte leakage was decreased. Based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing analysis, isolate GL02 was belonging to genus Trichoderma. Taken together, drought stress in pepper plants treated with GL02 was alleviated, when it was rewatered after drought-stressed, the plants could be recovered effectively. Therefore, Trichoderma sp. GL02 could be used as a bio-fertilizer to alleviate drought stress in pepper plants.
