  • This study aims to understand the relationship between mothers' expectation on school adjustment of their preschool children and mothers' perception of their parenting efficacy and their children's competence. Subjects were 340 mothers of 4-5 year old children attending child care centers and kindergartens located in Seoul and Kyunggy area. Test on elementary school children's school adjustment by Lim(1993). Parenting sense of competence adapted by Shin(1997), and Self-Perception profile for children' competence adapted by Jeon(1992) and Suh(1999) were adapted and used to measure mothers' expectation of their children's school adjustment, mothers' perception on their parenting efficacy and children's competence each. The data were analyzed by t-test, Correlation, simple and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows. Mothers who have jobs and have graduated university or more showed higher expectation on school adjustment of their children. Mothers also expect higher school adjustment of their daughters and of not the first child in their family. The more mothers percept their parenting efficacy, the higher they expect their children's school adjustment. Mothers's perception on their children's competence also showed same relationship with expectation of their children's school adjustment, that is, the more mothers percept their children's competence, the higher they expect their children's school adjustment.

Descriptive statistics, t -test, Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis analyzed data via SPSS ver. 20.0. This study followed a mediated effect model. The results showed that: (1) The emotional intelligence of girls was significantly higher than boys. However, the child-teacher relationship and children's social competence had no significant difference relationship to gender. (2) There was a mediating effect of child-teacher relationships between preschooler's emotional intelligence and social competence. The effect of emotional intelligence on social competence was partially mediated by intimate relationship, conflict relationship and dependency relationship. The degree of mediating effect was investigated in regards to conflict relationship, dependency relationship and intimate relationship. This study demonstrated that child-teacher relationships mediate the relationship between emotional intelligence and social competence of preschoolers.

Second, in the relationship between the mother's smartphone tendency and the social competence of the infant, The research model and the competition model were set up to examine the mediating effect and the competition model was found to be more appropriate. As a result, it can be seen that mother's original family experience is partly mediated in relation to mother's tendency to add to smartphone and social competence of infant. Based on these results, the implications of this study and suggestions for subsequent research were discussed.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the sequential mediating effects of self-esteem and positive peer play interaction between warmth parenting and the social competence of preschoolers. Methods: The 7th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children(2014) was used to analyze 1,113 preschoolers. Sequential mediation effects were analyzed using SPSS Process Macro(Hayes, 2013). Results: Warmth parenting indirectly affected preschooler's social competence (cooperation, assertion, self-control) by yielding sequential mediation effects on self-esteem and peer play interaction. Namely, warmth parenting does not directly affect social competence but does have a significant effect on preschooler self-esteem, which positively affected peer play interaction. This path increases the social competence(cooperation, assertion, self-control) of preschool children. Conclusion/Implications: In order to increase the social competence (cooperation, assertion, self-control) of preschool children, it is important for the preschooler to consider themselves a worthy person and to learn positive interaction techniques through warmth parenting.
