Upper gastrointestinal series is an examination that uses X-rays. It is important to defend against exposure to radiation during upper gastrointestinal examination because the organs, such as thyroid gland, lens, breasts, and gonads, with relatively high biological sensitivity to radiation are distributed on the examination area. We have made a whole body phantom that can change the depth of organs. radiation dose of eye, thyroid gland, breast and gonads were measured by the same procedure as the actual upper gastrointestinal examination. When performed only fluoroscopy the mean dose reduction of lens, thyroid gland, breast and gonads was 62.2%. The mean dose reduction of lens, thyroid gland, breast and gonads was 59.0% when both fluoroscopy and spot shoot were performed. Therefore, when performed upper gastrointestinal examination it was confirmed that shielding of the lens, thyroid gland, breast and gonads was effective in decreasing the exposure dose. The manufactured human phantom can be used in measuring radiation dose for deep organ because it can adjust the height corresponding to the organs located in the human body.
Purpose : To valuate the usefulness of mammographic image by using phantom 1,2 to controls the enhancement of image quality. Procedure : Set up same equipments for experiment (all the qualification must be the same). Control group and 4 other experiment the developing mammographys by using the image system with film/intensifying screen and distribute marks on each test objects of phantom 1, 2. Result : The results of the experiment using phantom 1, 2 on control group and 4 others are : 1. phantom 1's valuation with 3 items. - control group received 29 out of 32 - group A received 25 - group B received 16 - group C received 11.5 - group D received 28.5 The evaluation shows that the system has proved to display excellent image quality except group B and C. 2. Phantom 2's valuation with 4 items. - control group received 38 out of 38 - group A received 30 - group B received 16 - group C received 12.5 - group D received 38 Even with phantom 2, group B and C has displayed poor image quality. Conclusion : Both experiments using phantom 1 and 2 have shown that the most strong factor that control and influence the image quality are the filming equipments. Especially, the developing system has most powerful influence above all.
In this study, we have researched the effectiveness of silicone pad. A distribution of scatter ray in mammography was evaluated using Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation technique and then a silicone pad was applied to remove the scatter ray for improving image quality. Molybdenum target and Molybdenum filter combination made a difference of 59.8% to a number of photon at 17.5 keV. On the other hand, Tungsten target and Rhodium filter showed a variation of 24.5% at 20 keV. Mean 68 of SNR was increased in Selenia and mean 1.04 of SNR was raised in Senographe. Silicone pad was significantly effective to reduce the scatter ray that was generated by primary X-ray. It can decrease an absorption rate of scatter ray to patient body and whilst it improve the image quality from increasing SNR.
Synchrotron radiation (SR) has several advantages over convetional x-rays, including its phase, collimation, and high flux. A synchrotron radiation beamline 5C1 at Pohang Light Source (PLS) was recently built for imaging applications. We have shown that a SR imaging system is useful in imaging microscopic structures. SR with broad-band energy spectrum were adjusted to an object by Si wafers and their energy were approximately ranging from 6 keV to 30 keV. SR were passed through an object and finally transformed into visible lights by CdWO$_4$ scintillator screen. The visible lights which were reflected at an angle of 90 degrees by gold plated mirror were detected by a CCD camera and the image data were acquired using image acquisition system. A high-resolution phantom, capacitor, adult tooth, child tooth, cancerous breast tissue, and mouse lumbar vertebra were imaged with SR imaging system. The Objects were rotated within the field of view of the CCD detector, and their projection image data were obtained at 250 steps over 180 degrees rotation. Image reconstructions were carried out in a PC by using IDLTM(Research systems, Inc., US) program. The spatial resolution of the images acquired by the SR imaging system was measured with a high-resolution chart manufactured for several micrometer resolution. The specimens were also imaged with conventional x-ray radiography system to compare the image quality of radiography obtained with the SR imaging system. The results showed more structural details and high contrast images with SR imaging system than conventional x-ray radiography system. The SR imaging system may have a potential for imaging in biological researches, material applications, and clinical radiography.
Medical imaging has increased rapidly in the increase of interest in health, with the development of computer technology, digitization of medical imaging is rapidly advancing, PACS has been introduced to the medical field. Increase in the production of medical images by these phenomena made increased the workload of radiologist who must read a medical image. in response to the need for secondary diagnosis using a computer, The term of CAD in medical radiology field was introduced. In this study, we have proposed a CAD algorithm for the interpretation of the image obtained by the digital X-ray mammography equipment. The experiments were performed by programmed in Visual C++ for the proposed algorithm. A result of the execution of the CAD algorithm seven sample images, the results of five samples was confirmed in breast cancer and benign tumors, both the images sample was error processing. If you use a program that implements this with the algorithm proposed in this study it is helpful to reading breast images, and it is considered to contribute significantly to the early detection of breast cancer.
At a recent medical imaging technology, the major issue of X-ray diagnosis in breast cancer is the early detection of breast cancer and low patient's exposure dose. As one of studies to acquire a monochromatic X-ray, Technologies using multilayer mirror had been preceded. However, a uniform multilayer mirror that consists of uniform thin-film thickness can acquire a monochromatic X-ray only in the partial area corresponds to angle of incidence of white X-ray, so there are limits for X-ray imaging technology applications. In this study, we designed laterally graded multilayer mirror(below GML) that reflects same monochromatic X-ray over the entire area of thin-film mirror, which have the the thickness of the linear gradient that correspond to angle of incidence of white X-ray. By using ion-beam sputtering system added the mask control system we fabricated a GML which has size of $100{\times}100mm^2$. The GML is designed to achieve the monochromatic X-ray of 17.5kev energy and has thin-film thickness change from 4.62nm to 6.57nm(3.87nm at center). It reflects the monochromatic X-ray with reflectivity of more than 60 percent, FWHM of below 2.6keV and X-ray beam width of about 3mm. The monochromatic X-ray corresponded to 17.5keV using GML would have wide application in development of mammography system with high contrast and low dose.
Authers retrospectively analyzed ultrasonographic findings of 12 cases of breast carcinomas which were proven pathologocally at Yeungnam University Hospital from March 1992 to August 1992. Classically, breast carcinomas were described as irregular and lobulated hypoechoic solid masses with inhomogenous internal echoes and frequent attenuation of the sound beam. And other additional ultrasonographic findings were echogenic rim, disruptions of superficial layer, microcalcification, skin thickening and so on. In our studies, not all of these findings of breast carcinomas were found in each case, but most of these findings were noted. However, several studies have demonstrated considerable overlap in the ultrasonographic appearance of benign lesions and carcinoma. Thus, accurate sonographic determination of the type of solid mass is not possible with current ultrasonographic imaging techniques and criteria. For more accurate diganosis of breast lesions, sonographic and other imaging techniqes are interpreted together.
There have been continuous controversies on medical X-ray protection and numerous researchers have been trying to prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation. As X-ray passes through the patient and obtains an image, it creates scattered ray due to interactions such as photoelectric effect and Compton scattering with the subject. As a result, both medical radiation staff and patient are exposed to unnecessary radiation on areas other than the target area. In response, this study will be assuming a body of a female, radiating X-ray on the phantom under the conditions of lumbar spine AP test, and measuring scattered ray around breasts and thyroid glands. Then, The experiment results were as follows. After application of non-shielding material, the average of scattered ray was 0.88 mR in thyroid measurement, 3.34 mR, Lt Axillary 3.54 mR, and Rt Axillary 3.03 mR in mamonary measurement but, After application of shielding material, the average of scattered ray was 0.16 mR in thyroid measurement, 0.60 mR, Lt Axillary 0.64 mR, and Rt Axillary 0.54 mR in mamonary measurement showing average scattered ray protection effect of about 82%. This study suggested the manufacturing method of a Jelly-type shielding material, identified the possibilities of researches on mixing various substances with radiology field, and verified the usability of the Jelly-type shielding material as a substitute for existing protection tools.
It is important to consider the contrast of object in Mammography because an absorption gap between tissues of body and breast in breast is low. This study is to evaluate MTF image with resolution chart according to change of combination of target and filter. The results were as follows : 1. There were significant differences in X-ray energy according to combination of filter(Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh. Mo/Al, Rh/Rh, Rh/Al) and acrylic thickness(2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm). 2. The value of lp/mm on MTF to 0.5 showed that the sharpness in MTF curve was 2.4 compared to Mo/Mo and 2cm acryl, 2.63 in Mo/Rh and 4 cm acryl, and 2.9 in Rh/Rh and 6cm acryl. 3. The value of lp/mm on MTF showed that the resolution in MTF curve was 6.0 compared to Mo/Mo and 2 cm acryl, 4.60 in Rh/Al and 4cm acryl, and 6.03 in Rh/Al and 6 cm acryl. 4. The value of MTF on 2.5 lp/mm distinguishable visually was 0.48 compared to Mo/Mo and 2 cm acryl, 0.53 in Mo/Rh and 4cm acryl, and 0.59 in Rh/Rh and 6cm acryl. 5. For the evaluation of an image of the mammo-phantom, the score of Mo/Mo was 12 points, Mo/Rh 11, Rh/Rh 10.5, Mo/Al 10, Rh/Al 9.0, respectively.
A hard X-ray microscope system for obtaining images of nano-spatial resolution has been widely studied and requires monochromatic X-ray. A multilayer mirror of 84% reflectivity was designed to acquire tungsten characteristic X-ray of 8.4 keV from the white beam generated from an X-ray tube, and the C/W multilayer mirror of $50{\times}50\;mm$ size and 5.65 nm d-spacing was fabricated by the ion-beam sputtering system. The C/W multilayer had a uniformity of 99.5%, and the structure of the multilayer mirror was verified by a TEM image. The obtainable x-ray reflectivity for the C/W multilayer mirror at 8.4 keV was estimated from measuring the X-ray reflectivity using the copper characteristic X-ray of 8.05 keV. Monochromatic X-ray of 8.4 keV was generated by combining a X-ray tube, and the reflectivity and monochromaticity were 77.1% and 0.21 keV, respectively. Monochromatic X-ray generated from the combination of an X-ray tube and an C/W multilayer mirror has enough potential to use X-ray source for hard X-ray microscope system of laboratory size. If the C/W multilayer mirror of d-spacing of a few nanometers can be fabricated, monochromatic X-ray corresponded to 17.5 keV, molybdenum characteristic X-ray, can be obtained and applied to mammography in the medical application.
