  • This paper describes the results of experiments to analyze the free vibration of the laminated composite and hybrid composite plates with various shapes and boundary conditions. The materials of specimens were the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), the GFRP-Aluminum hybrid composite and the CFRP-CFRP hybrid composite. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with various shapes were experimentally obtained by impact exciting test using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. The experimental results were presented with normalized frequency parameters. The effects of composite material properties, fiber orientation angles, various geometrical shapes and boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics of composite plates were evaluated. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis was carried out, and was well agreed with experimental results.

  • To improve dielectric and mechanical properties of insulating composite by plasma surface treatment, new plasma surface treatment process is designed with concentric and hemi-circle electrodes system. the plasma, which is generated between anode and cathode, is induced to the upper side of the electrode system and treats the surface of the insulators. The optimal surface treatment condition is that pressure : 0.5[torr], flux density : 100[gauss], discharge current : 500[mA] and treatment time : 3 minutes. The composite filled with glass cloth surface-treated by plasma shows the improvement in electric and mechanical properties, comparing non- and coupling agent treated samples.

  • Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) is applied to fabricate the main structures of composite boats. Most of them are made from molds. These products deform after releasing from the mold and they also deform in high temperature environment. Therefore, experimental investigation and evaluation of deformation of laminated composite structures under various manufacturing and working conditions are necessary. The specimens of L-shape and curveshape were made from unsaturated polyester resin and fiberglass material. Input factors (independent variables) are percentage of hardener and manufacturing temperature and four levels of working temperature and output factor is the deformation which is measured on these specimens. From the results, it was observed that the higher the hardener rate and temperature, the lower the deformation. When the working temperature increased, the specimens showed great variations for the initial deformation values. Besides, the values of deformation or input factors could be predicted by regression equations.

  • Due to lightweight and high durability of glass-fiber reinforced polyester (GFRP) materials, they are promising alternatives to conventional construction materials such as steel, concrete and wood. As good application examples of GFRP materials, several types of temporary arch bridges were suggested and verified by finite element analyses in our previous study where snap-fit GFRP decks were applied. In this paper, we conduct a structural performance test to verify safety and serviceability of the temporary arch bridge, where snap-fit GFRP decks are assembled by bolts. The structural problems occurred in this test are also discussed and improvement of temporary arch bridges is suggested to resolve the occurred structural problems.

  • Glass-fiber reinforced polyester (GFRP) composite material is a promising alternative to existing construction materials such as steel, concrete and wood due to light weight and high durability of GFRP composite material. If a temporary arch bridge is built by GFRP composite deck, rapid construction of the bridge and reuse of the GFRP composite deck are possible. In this paper, we develop a type of temporary arch bridges that can be built by easy assembling of GFRP composite decks. For this purpose, several possible types of temporary arch bridges are suggested and verified by finite element analysis.

  • This paper presented analysis methods for adapting E-glass fiber/epoxy composite (GFRP) materials to an automotive leaf spring. It focused on the static behaviors of the leaf spring due to the material composition and its fiber orientation. The material properties of the GFRP composite were directly measured based on the ASTM standard test. A reverse implementation was performed to obtain the complete set of in-situ fiber and matrix properties from the ply test results. Next, the spring rates of the composite leaf spring were examined according to the variation of material parameters such as the fiber angles and resin contents of the composite material. Finally, progressive failure analysis was conducted to identify the initial failure load by means of an elastic stress analysis and specific damage criteria. As a result, it was found that damage first occurred along the edge of the leaf spring owing to the shear stresses.

  • The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of its excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be removed to keep the precision of designed shape. In this research, the spring-back of {glass fiber / epoxy}+{carbon fiber / epoxy} unsymmetric hybrid composites were predicted using Classical Lamination Theory (CLT), and compared with the experimental data. Additionally, using finite element analysis (ANSYS), the predicted data and experimental data were compared. The predicted values by CLT and ANSYS were well matched with experimental data.

  • The carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforced prepregs were manufactured using electrostatic flocking technology. The powder of high density polyethylene was used as a matrix. The base film of polyethylene was prepared using a fluidized bed of polyethylene powder under the high electric field. We obtained HDPE film with uniform thickness of minimum $80\mu\textrm{m}$. And the fibers were aligned on the molten HDPE film by the electroflocking process. The short fibers with 1mm were easily electrically charged and aligned under the high electric field. The carbon fibers with high conductivity were elasily electrically charged than the glass fibers with low conductivity. So lower electric field was needed for the carbon fibers.

  • To understand the tensile behaviors of GFRP at low temperature, three types of specimen have been used in this study. Tensile properties and fracture mechanisms for three orthogonal orientations of plain weave glass fabric reinforced epoxy resin laminate were investigated at temperature range of about -30 to $15^{\circ}C$. The tensile properties of axial and edge type specimen decrease slightly with decreasing temperature to $-20^{\circ}C$. However, at $-30^{\circ}C$ the decreases in the tensile properties increased considerably. Below $-20^{\circ}C$, thickness type specimen showed a marked decreases in the tensile properties. It was obvious that the fracture manner of thickness type specimen was adhesive failure at above $-10^{\circ}C$ and a mixed adhesive and cohesive failure at below $-20^{\circ}C$.

  • The anisotropic mechanical properties were measured for the three orthogonal orientations of plain weave glass fabric reinforced epoxy resin laminate. In tensile and flexural tests, axial and edge type specimens failed by pull-out of warp and fill yarns, respectively. In contrast, the thickness type specimens failed by adhesive failure process. Longitudinal cracking occurred in several of the edge type specimens during tensile test. That cracking caused pop-in in the stress-strain curve. Defects induced by improper coupon machining caused that cracking.
