  • Composite materials are widely used to make all kinds of machine parts, internal and structural materials of cars, aerospace industries, building structures, ship materials, sporting goods and others. It is worth the while to use composite materials as various substitutions when compared with others. But the use is limited in the field of the mechanical processing because of its difficulties in processing. Thus, it is proved that the surface is rough in and out of the hole processing the GFRP with HSS drill in the vertical machining center.

  • In order to investigate the relationship between the stiffness and structure of the automotive roof panels, two kinds of glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) roof panels without and with insert material were fabricated by resin transfer molding(RTM) method. The stiffness test was performed at the same condition as it of actual driving. The structural design and material selection for improving the recyclability of GFRP roof panels were also covered.

  • Rubber related geosynthetics(GS) as reinforcement and water barrier materials were manufactured by thermal bonding method and examined the their performance for applications to civil and environmental engineering fields. The spunbonded polyester nonwoven, fiber glass mat and fabric type geogrid of a high tenacity polyester filament were used as matrix and polyester film, elastomeric bitumen with SBS polymer and asphalt were used as reinforcements to manufacture the rubber related geosynthetics. A fiber glass mat and geogrid matrix GS showed more excellent mechanical properties and nonwoven and elastomeric bitumen matrix showed the more excellent permittivity. Softening points of rubber and asphalt mixture showed no difference and dimensional stability at high temperature, $120^{\circ}C$, represented no significant shrinkage. Resistance to ultraviolet of rubber related geosynthetics showed no visible alteration.

  • During the curing process of thick glass/epoxy laminates, a substantial amount of temperature lag and overshoot at the center of the laminates is usually experienced due to the large thickness and low thermal conductivity of the glass/epoxy composites. Also, it requires a longer time for full and uniform consolidation. In this work, temperature, degree of cure and consolidation of a 20mm thick unidirectional glass/epoxy laminate were investigated using an experiment and a 3-dimentional numerical analysis considering the exothermic reaction. From the experimental and numerical results, it was found that the experimentally obtained temperature profile agreed well with the numerical one and the cure cycle recommended by the prepreg manufacturer should be modified to prevent a temperature overshoot and to obtain full consolidation.

  • The object of this study was to investigate the feasibility of solid-phase forming of the composites and to characterize the material behavior in the biaxial stretch forming. The materials tested contained 20%, 30%, and 40% glass fibers by weight in a polypropylene matrix. Biaxial stretch forming tests were performed at three forming speeds of 10mm/sec, 1mm/sec, and 0.1mm/sec and at four forming temperatures of $75^{\circ}C, 100^{\circ}C, 125^{\circ}C, and 150^{\circ}C$ to investigate effects of forming speed and forming temperature. The microscopic observation of a formed part was conducted at various strain levels to characterize the material behavior. The strain distribution on a formed part was measured and displayed on the farmed geometry with a contour display The material behavior of the composite in the biaxial stretch forming was strongly influenced by the forming conditions.

  • This study concerns with the effect of fiber weight fraction on the fracture toughness of long glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene composites. Fracture tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens made of glass fiber polypropylene composites. Three fiber weight fractions of 20%, 30%, and 40% were used. Fracture toughness was determined from the compliance method. Results showed that compliance decreased with increasing fiber weight fraction while critical load increased with fiber weight fraction. Averaged fracture toughness increased 14% as fiber weight fraction increased from 20% to 40%.

압축성형은 현재 자동차 외장부품 성형에 널리 알려져 있는 SMC(Sheet Molding Compound)성형, 최근에 많은 연구가 되고 있는 LMPC(Low Pressure Molding Compound)성형, GMT(Glass Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics)성형 등이 있다. 액상성형은 RTM(Resin Transfer Molding)과 VARI (Vacuum Assisted Injection Molding), SRIM(Structure Reaction Injection Molding) 등이 있으며, 자동차 산업뿐만 아니라 일반 산업에서도 최근 많은 각광을 받고 있다.

  • Blades are one of the critical parts of the wind machine. This paper presents a design procedure for the blade of a 7m diameter horizontal axis wind turbine with the constraint conditions of stresses and fundamental frequency. This blade consists of glass/polyester woven fabric and unidirectional prepreg. It was firstly designed by the classical beam theory on the assumption that torque box sustains all external loads and the reliability of the blade was then inspected in the preliminary estimation by using FEM.

  • In this study, a mixture of polypropylene fibers and glass fibers were used to weave polypropylene/glass fiber-reinforced composite panels with characteristics such as highly elongated short fibers, high ductility, anti-fouling, and hydrophobicity as a result of a directional property. Mechanical and environmental tests were carried out with specimens fabricated with this composite panel, and its applicability to shipbuilding and ocean leisure industries was evaluated through a comparison with existing glass fiber-reinforced composite materials. The results of this experiment verified the excellence of the polypropylene/glass-mixed woven fiber-reinforced composite material compared to the existing glass fiber-reinforced composite material. However, the forming process needs to be changed to improve the weak interfacial bonding, and the properties of the composite material itself could be improved through mixed weaving with other fibers after development. Maximizing of the advantages of the polypropylene fibers and overcoming their shortcomings will improve their applicability to the shipbuilding, ocean leisure, and other industries, and increase the value of polypropylene fibers in the composite material market.
