Background: Estimation of the probability of a patient having an acute pulmonary embolism (PE) for patients with a suspected PE are well established in North America and Europe. However, an assessment of the prediction rules for a PE has not been clearly defined in Korea. The aim of this study is to assess the prediction rules for patients with a suspected PE in Korea. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of 210 inpatients or patients that visited the emergency ward with a suspected PE where computed tomography pulmonary angiography was performed at a single institution between January 2005 and March 2007. Simplified Wells rules and revised Geneva rules were used to estimate the clinical probability of a PE based on information from medical records. Results: Of the 210 patients with a suspected PE, 49 (19.5%) patients had an actual diagnosis of a PE. The proportion of patients classified by Wells rules and the Geneva rules had a low probability of 1% and 21%, an intermediate probability of 62.5% and 76.2%, and a high probability of 33.8% and 2.8%, respectively. The prevalence of PE patients with a low, intermediate and high probability categorized by the Wells rules and Geneva rules was 100% and 4.5% in the low range, 18.2% and 22.5% in the intermediate range, and 19.7% and 50% in the high range, respectively. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the revised Geneva rules had a higher accuracy than the Wells rules in terms of detecting PE. Concordance between the two prediction rules was poor ($\kappa$ coefficient=0.06). Conclusion: In the present study, the two prediction rules had a different predictive accuracy for pulmonary embolisms. Applying the revised Geneva rules to inpatients and emergency ward patients suspected of having PE may allow a more effective diagnostic process than the use of the Wells rules.

To estimate association of minerals relating to non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus(NIDDM) the contents of essential minerals and toxic heavy metals in the scalp hair were measured during the period from March 1993 to June 1993. The cases were selected 69 (32 male, 37 female) from the patients who visited Kyungpook University Hospital during the period from March 1993 to June 1993 and 74 controls (47 male 27 female) from normal population. zinc, copper, manganese, lead, cadmium and aluminum were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer(IL. 551). The results were summarized as follows. In NIDDM group, mean contents of zinc and copper were $132.99{\pm}19.66$ ppm, $8.58{\pm}5.07$ ppm respectively; where as $152.51{\pm}46.15$ ppm, $12.48{\pm}6.56$ ppm in control group. The mean of above two mineral content showed significant difference statistically (p<0.01). But, in manganese the content of NIDDM group; $0.44{\pm}0.27$ ppm were significantly higher than the control group; $0.34{\pm}0.18$ ppm(p<0.05). A thesis submitted to the Council of the Graduate School of Kyungpook National University in partial fulfillment of the require ements for the degree of Ph.D. in Medical Science in June 1994. The mean contents of toxic metals - lead, cadmium, aluminum - in NIDDM group were $10.04{\pm}4.60$ ppm, $0.57{\pm}0.12$ ppm, $11.31{\pm}3.98$ ppm; whereas $8.10{\pm}2.45$ ppm, $0.41{\pm}0.23$ ppm, $7.61{\pm}4.16$ ppm in control group. The mean of above three mineral showed significant difference statistically(p<0.01). Cadmium, zinc and copper were selected statistically significant variables with presence of the NIDDM by multiple logistic regression analysis; copper, zinc and cadmium may be associated with NIDDM.

This in vitro study compared the remineralization of incipient interproximal caries in the presence of three glass ionomer cements (highly-filled glass ionomer cement, compomer, resin-modified glass ionomer cement) and a resin composite(control). The long-term changes in remineralization caused by each material were evaluated by microtomography. Proximal restoration was simulated by placing tooth specimens and the various glass ionomer cements in closed containers with artificial saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0 for 30 days with constant circulation Tomographic images were obtained with a micro CT scanner at 90, 180, and 270 days, and density-measuring software was used to calculate the micro-density of artificial caries lesions in the specimens. The mean density changes were compared between groups in order to evaluate the effects of remineralization. All data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the post-HOC Tukey multiple comparison test at p<0.05. While the density of artificial caries lesions increased for all treatments, the increases for the three glass ionomer groups were significantly higher than that for the resin group in each three month period. As time went on, the amount of density increase of the glass ionomer groups decreased, and significant differences were found between the remineralization effects of the glass ionomer groups.
This study was carried out to compare the storability of Salsola komarovi Iljin and Suaeda maritima L. Dum which stored at different storage temperatures in MA storage. These plants that had grown in greenhouse packed with $50\;{\mu}m$ ceramic film and then stored in $2^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$ temperature. The fresh weight loss both plants was less than 1% in all temperature treatments. The highest fresh weight loss showed at $25^{\circ}C$ among storage temperature treatments in Salsola komarovi Iljin between plants. The highest carbon dioxide contents in package showed at $25^{\circ}C$ among storage temperature treatments in Salsola komarovi Iljin between plants, and at $2^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ temperature treatments remained less than 1%. Oxygen contents in package both plants showed the highest level at $2^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment, but Salsola komarovi Iljin showed less oxygen contents than Suaeda maritima L. Dum. Although there was no significant difference ethylene contents in package between $2^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ temperature treatments, the higher showed in $10^{\circ}C$ than $2^{\circ}C$ temperature treatments. The ethylene contents in package both plants were roughly $20\;{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and the higher was in Suaeda maritima L. Dum than Salsola komarovi Iljin at $2^{\circ}C$. As increasing the storage temperature, the contents of carbon dioxide and ethylene in package also increased in both plants. The carbon dioxide and ethylene contents of Salsola komarovi Iljin showed a significant difference between $2^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ temperature treatments, but Suaeda maritima L. Dum did not show. The shelf life of Salsola komarovi Iljin based on visual quality was 14 days at $2^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment and 7.5 days at $10^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment. However, the shelf life of Suaeda maritima L. Dum did not show a significant difference between $2^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment that was 11 days, and $10^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment that was 9.5 days. Considering visual quality and gas contents in package, Suaeda maritima L. Dum might appear chilling injury at $2^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment.
The research for incubation period, mycelial density, day required for primordial formation after inoculation(below DPI), number of valid stipes, individual weight and accumulation amounts of organic selenium for P. cornucopiae by treating 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000(${\mu}g/50g$) of $Na_2SeO_3$ is following. Incubation periods of P. cornucopiae are 25~30 days per each treatment with $Na_2SeO_3$. Compared to the control which took 22 days of incubation period, it is increased 3 or 8 days for the treatment of $600{\sim}1000{\mu}g/50g$. Mycelial density of P. cornucopiae treated with $Na_2SeO_3$ between 600 and $1000{\mu}g/50g$ is very similar with control. DPI of P. cornucopiae treated with $Na_2SeO_3$ between 600 and $1000{\mu}g/50g$ was increased 3 or 8 days. Number of valid stipes of P. cornucopiae treated with $Na_2SeO_3$ between 600 and $1000{\mu}g/50g$ was between 10 and 16. It was decreased 2 or 8 as compared to 18 of control. Individual weight of P. cornucopiae treated with $Na_2SeO_3$ between 600 and $1000{\mu}g/50g$ was between 94 and 116g/850cc. It was decreased 5.7~23.5% as compared to 123g/850cc of the control. Accumulation amount of organic selenium for P. cornucopiae treated with $Na_2SeO_3$ between 600 and $1000{\mu}g/50g$ was $9.1{\sim}10.8{\mu}g/g/dry$. It was increased 182~216 times as the concentration increased when compared to $0.05{\mu}g/g/dry$ of the control. In conclusion, incubation period, mycelial density, DPI, number of valid stipes, individual weight and accumulation amounts of organic selenium for P. cornucopiae by treating $600{\sim}1000{\mu}g/g$ of $Na_2SeO_3$ was decreased. So that the optimal treatment was less $400{\mu}g/g$ than $600{\sim}1000{\mu}g/g$.

The purpose of this study was investigated the effects of YK-209 mulberry leaves on antioxidative defense system of liver in diabetic rats induced with streptozotocin (STZ). Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 100$\pm$10 g were randomly assigned to one normal and four STZ-induced diabetic groups; YK-209 mulberry leaves free diet (DM group),0.1% YK-209 mulberry leaves diet (DM-0.1Y group),0.2% YK-209 mulberry leaves diet (DM-0.2Y group) and 0.4% YK-209 mulberry leaves diet (DM-0.4Y group). Diabetes was induced by intravenous Injection of 55 mg/kg body weight of STZ in sodium citrate buffer (pH 4.3) via tail vein after 4 weeks feeding of experimental diets. Rats were sacrificed at the 9th day of diabetic states. Liver weight in all four diabetic groups were higher than normal group, but YK-209 mulberry supplementation groups were lower than DM group. Hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly decreased in all diabetic groups, compared with normal group. Hepatic glutathione peroxidase (GSHpx) activity was 7.3% decreased in DM group, compared with normal group, but those of DM-0.1Y and DM-0.2Y groups were maintained the normal level. The hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substances was markedly increased by 144% in DM group, compared with normal group, but those of DM-0. 1Y, DM-0.2Y groups were maintained the normal level. The contents of lipofuscin in liver were increased by 100% in DM group compared with normal group, but those of DM-0. 1Y, DM-0.2Y and DM-0.4Y groups were decreased to 42% 43% and 44%, respectively, compared with DM group. The hepatic superoxide radical (0$^2$-) contents in DM group were increased to 81%, compared with normal group, but those of DM-0.1Y and DM-0.4Y groups were similar to those of normal group. The present result indicate that YK-209 mulberry leaves regarded to suppress lipid peroxidation as an free radical scavenger system by the inhibition of oxidative stress.

Valproic acid (VPA) is a well-known anticonvulsive agent and has been used in the treatment of epilepsy for almost 30 years. VPA emerged in 1997 as an antineoplastic agent. And it is known that antitmor activity of VPA is associated with its targeted at histone deacetylases. 17AAG, Inhibition of HSP90 leads to the proteasome degradation of the HSP90 client proteins, such as Akt, Raf/Ras, Erk, VEGF, cyclin D and p53, and causes potent antitumor activity. It is reported that 17AAG-induced HSP90 inhibition results in prevention of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis in several types of cancer. This study was undertaken to investigate the synergistic apoptotic effect of co-treatment with the histone deacetylases inhibitor, VPA and the HSP90 inhibitor, 17AAG on human osteosarcoma (HOS) cells. Cell viability was evaluated by trypan-blue exclusion. Induction and augmentation of apoptosis were confirmed by Hoechst staining, flow cytometry (DNA hypoploidy and MMP change), Westen blot analysis and immunofluorescent staining. In this study, HOS cells co-treated with VPA and 17AAG showed several lines of apoptotic manifestation such as nuclear condensations, the reduction of MMP, the decrease of DNA content, the release of cytochrome c into cytosol, the translocation of AIF onto nuclei, and activation of caspase-3, caspase-7 and PARP whereas each single treated HOS cells did not. Although the single treatment of 1 mM VPA or 0.5 ${\mu}M$ 17AAG for 48 h did not induce apoptosis, the co-treatment with them induced prominently apoptosis. Therefore our data in this study provide the possibility that combination therapy with VPA and 17AAG could be considered as a novel therapeutic strategy for human osteosarcoma.

We have investigated physiological effects of soy ice cream with oligosaccharide on oxidative stress and fecal microflora in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Parched soybean powder (7.6$\%$, w/w) substituted skimmed milk and cream, soybean oil (7.6$\%$, w/w) for milk oil, and fructooligosaccharide (9.5$\%$, w/w) for sucrose. Five types of ice cream were prepared: regular, oligosaccharide-supplemented regular, soy, oligosaccharide - supplemented soy, and oligosaccharide - supplemented black soybean ice cream . Freeze - dried ice cream was supplemented to AIN93-based diets at 30$\%$ (w/w) containing 6.5$\%$ soy and 4.5$\%$ fructooligosaccharide. Diabetes was induced by intramuscular administration of streptozotocin, and experimental diets were given for 4 weeks. Plasma concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was significantly increased in the diabetic rats compared with the normal rats, then was significantly decreased with feeding soy ice cream containing diet compared with regular ice cream containing diet among the diabetic groups. The levels of TBARS in liver were decreased in the rats that were fed either soy or oligosaccharide ice cream compared with the rats that were fed regular ice cream. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity was significantly increased in the rats fed soy ice cream compared with the rats fed regular ice cream. Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities were significantly increased in the rats fed black soybean ice cream. Fecal concentrations of Lactobacilli were significantly higher in the rats fed soy ice cream and oligosaccharide- supplemented soy ice cream than that of the rats fed regular ice cream. Fecal concentrations of Bifidobacteria were significantly higher in the rats fed oligosaccharide- supplemented soy ice cream than that of the rats fed regular ice cream. In conclusion, oligosaccharide- supplemented soy ice cream suppressed lipid peroxidation and improved the got microbiota in diabetic rats compared with milk-based regular ice cream.

Sanguisorba officinalis L. has been used as a traditional remedy for arthritis, neuralgia, diarrhea, vomiting, gastric ulcer and gastro-intestinal disorders. This study was performed to investigate the protective effects of ethylacetate fraction of Sanguisorba officinalis L. ethanol extract (SOE) on the gastric mucosal damage and gastric ulcer induced by HCI-ethanol, indomethacin, Shay-ligation method, restraint and water-immersion stress, and cysteamine in rats. The experiment animals were divided into four groups: a negative control group (CON), positive control group (cimetidine 100 mg/kg-CMT or omeprazol 100 mg/kg administrated group-OMT), SOE 200 mg/kg administrated group (SOL) and SOE 400 mg/kg administrated group (SOH), respectively. Rats were given an oral or intraduodenal administration of SOE, and all SOE treatment groups compared with the CON significantly inhibited HCI-ethanol-induced acute gastritis and indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in dose-dependent manner, of which effects were lower in a positive control drug (CMT). The inhibition rates ($\%$) on the acute gastritis induced by HCI-ethanol and the gastric ulcers induced by indomethacin in rats, 17.66$\%$ and 48.28$\%$ in SOL, 21.71$\%$, and 51.08$\%$ in SOH, and 47.26$\%$ and 58.26$\%$ in CMT compared with CON, respectively, In pylorus ligated rats, the groups of SOE showed decreases in the volume of gastric secretion and acid output. However, no significant differences were observed in the pepsin activity between treated groups . In addition, SOH also depressed gastric ulcers induced by restraint and water-immersion stress and duodenal ulcers induced by cysteamine. These results suggest that Sanguisorba officinalis L. has remarkable antigastric ulcer effects and could be developed as a new antigastric ulcer agents.
