  • This study aimed to develop flowable backfill material using oyster shell, coal ash, and surplus soil. The high temperature (> $800^{\circ}C$) reaction was required to convert $CaCO_3$ to CaO. The solid specimens formed by pozzlanic reaction between CaO and coal ash showed low unconfined compressive strength. The effect of kaolin and blast furnace slag was also examined. It was found that CaO and coal ash could not be utilized due to high cost and low performance. The use of oyster shell without calcination ($CaCO_3$) was evaluated. The specimens composing of oyster shell and cement showed the higher unconfined compressive strength than that composing of coal ash and cement. However, use of oyster shell is limited in mortar due to the presence of salt. Addition of soil into oyster shell-coal ash-cement mixture satisfied the specification of flowable backfill material by optimizing their ratio.

  • During construction of circular lifeline pipe, the non-proper compaction along the pipe and the decrease of compaction efficiency are the main problems to induce the failure of underground pipe. The use of CLSM(controlled low strength materials) is one of the applications to overcome those problems. In this research, the numerical analysis by PENTAGON FEM program was carried out for 20 cases with the couple of combinations on bedding materials, backfill materials, and pipes. From the FEM analysis, the use of CLSM as backfill materials reduced the settlement of ground surface and the deformation of pipe employed. In case of the vertical deformation on the pipe, common soil backfill for flexible pipes showed 2 times for rigid pipes, but CLSM backfill case did less deformation than the soil backfill for rigid pipes. CLSM backfills for rigid pipes showed the similar results. Judging from the FEM analysis, the use of CLSM increases the structure capacity of the underground pipes.

  • Couple of laboratory for controlled low strength materials with bottom ash and recycled in-situ soil have been carried out. The optimum mix ratios for 4 cases with flowability and unconfined compressive strength were determined. The optimim mixing ratios were 25 to 45% of insitu soil, 30% of bottom ash, 10 to 20% of fly ash, 0 to 3% of crumb rubber, 3% of cement and 22% of water. Each mixture was satisfied the standard specification, minimum 20cm of flowability and 127 kPa of unconfined compressive strength. Two different curling methods, at room temperature and wet condition, were adopted. The average secant modulus(E50) was 0.07 to 0.08 * $q_u$. The compressive strength at wet condition showed 10% larger than at room temperature. The range of internal friction angle and cohesion for mixtures were 36.5o to 46.6o and 49.1 to 180 kPa, respectively. The mixture with crumb rubber(case 4) showed higher choesion and lower internal friction angle than the others. The pH of all the mixtures was over 12 which is strong alkine.

  • This study introduces strength characteristics of the anti-washout grouting material using viscous modifiers and its characteristics mixed with coarse materials. Especially, this study focused on the strength characteristics of the grouts mixed with sea water. It is found that the anti-washout grout mixed with sea water has enough strength and good resistance to segregation just like that with fresh water. Also, a small scale test was performed to evaluate the solidification characteristic of the anti-washout grout mixed with coarse fill materials. It is also found that the strength of anti-washout grout mixed with coarse fill materials is greater and better segregation resistance than those of conventional grout with fill materials.

  • Industrial use of waste oyster shells is limited because of requiring excessive energy for converting natural oyster shells in the form of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) into calcium oxide (CaO) for this purpose. This study aimed to develop energy-saving process for producing solidifying agent using waste oyster shells for backfill materials. It was suggested that oyster shells were converted to calcium sulfates which were mixed with sodium hydroxide solution and red clay, forming solid specimen. The optimal concentrations of sulfuric acid for sulfation of oyster shell and sodium hydroxide to generate calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$), were determined. Unconfined compressive strength of solid specimen increased with increasing the content of solidifying agent while it increased also with increasing ratio of natural oyster shells to coal ash. The result clearly demonstrates that solidifying agent consisting of sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell, coal ash, and sodium hydroxide solution, can be effectively utilized for preparing backfill materials using natural oyster shell and coal ash. Sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell-based solidifying agent has not been previously developed and will contribute to broaden industrial application of waste oyster shells.

  • Due to population growth and industrial development, the amount of industrial waste is increasing every year. In particular, in a thermal power plant using finely divided coal, a large amount of coal ash is generated after combustion of the coal. Among them, fly ash is recycled as a raw material for cement production and concrete admixture, but about 20% is not utilized and is landfilled. Due to the continuous reclamation of such a large amount of coal ash, it is required to find a correct treatment and recycling plan for the coal ash due to problems of saturation of the landfill site and environmental damage such as soil and water pollution. In recent years, the use of a fluid embankment material that can exhibit an appropriate strength without requiring a compaction operation is increasing. The fluid embankment material is a stable treated soil formed by mixing solidifying materials such as water and cement with soil, which is the main material, and has high fluidity before hardening, so compaction work is not required. In addition, after hardening, it is used for backfilling or filling in places where compaction is difficult because higher strength and earth pressure reduction effect can be obtained compared to general soil. In this study, the possibility of use of fluidized soil using high water content cohesive soil and coal ash is considered. And it is intended to examine the flow characteristics, strength, and bearing capacity characteristics of the material, and to investigate the effect of reducing the earth pressure when applied to an underground burial.

  • In this study, flowable backfill made with weathered granite soil is tested to provide basic engineering properties that can be used as design input to overcome settlement problems in road pavement due to low stiffness of backfill which is generated by porosity of the soil. For design purpose, a proper mixing ratio is developed first. Then several test methods including FF/RC, PMT and LDWT including axial compression test are adapted for checking stiffness and measuring axial strength of the material separately that can be used for design values.

  • The development of Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM), which is a highly flowable material, has been performed for the application of backfill. The objective of this study is to compare the compressive strength and compressive wave velocity of CLSM according to the curing time. To investigate the characteristics of the CLSM consisting of sand, silt, water, flyash, and CSA cement, uniaxial compression test and flow test were carried out. For the measurement of compressional waves, a cell and a couple of transducers were used. The test results show that the compressive strength increases with the curing time, while the increment of compressive strength decreases with the curing time. In addition, the compressive wave velocity increases with the curing time, and the correlation between the compressive wave velocity and compressive strength is similar to exponential function. This study suggests that the correlation between the compressive wave velocity and compressive strength may be effectively used for the estimation of compressive strength of the CLSM at early curing time.

  • There are few attempts to estimate the strength and stiffness of controlled low strength material (CLSM) using existing field-testing methods. The objective of this study is to evaluate the resilient modulus of CLSM by using the Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) and investigate the relationships between the resilient modulus from LWD and the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and secant modulus of elasticity from unconfined compressive test. Five CLSMs with different mix designs are used to evaluate the flowability and the stiffening of the CLSM in the flow and Vicat needle tests, respectively. To evaluate the early strength and stiffness characteristics, unconfined compressive tests are performed using the CLSM specimens cured for 1 and 7 days. LWD tests are carried out to estimate the resilient modulus of the CLSM specimens. The experimental results show that for the curing time of 1 day, the UCS and secant modulus of elasticity generally increase with the fast setting mortar content (FC). The CLSM specimen with the highest FC shows the significant increase in the UCS and secant modulus of elasticity along the curing time. Overall, the resilient modulus for the curing time of 1 day increases with the FC, while that for the curing time of 7days decreases with an increase in the FC. From the results, the linear relationships between the resilient modulus and UCS and secant modulus of elasticity are established.

  • An existing Steel pipe, Cast iron pipe and Concrete pipe is can not escaped from aging, specially Metal tube is causing many problems that the quality of water worse is concerned about many rust and mike efficient use of preservation of water. The use of Glassfiber Reinforced Plastic Pipe(GRP PIPE) should be one of the possible scheme to get over these problems. The GRP PIPE has an excellent resistance power and the life is lasting from 50 to 100 years roughly. It's to be useful as a result of high durability and a good construction work also it is a light weight therefore can be expected to short the time of construction and man power. In this research, to executed the small-scaled model test, in-situ model test using CLSM of in-situ soil and to evaluated the stress - strain of the pipe also try to estimated how useful is. From the model test in laboratory, the vertical and horizontal deformation of the GRP PIPE measured in six instance using 200mm and 300mm in diameters. The value of experimentation, theory, analysis got the same results of the test, but the vertical and horizontal deformation gauged in small and the earth pressure was almost zero using CLSM of in-situ soil..
