The global stability of the attitude motion of a spin-stabilized space vehicle is investigated by performing numerical experiment. In the previous study, a stationary solution and a particular resonant condition for a given model were found by using analytical method but failed to represent the system stability over parameter values near and off the stationary points. Accordingly, as an extension of the previous work, this study performs numerical experiment to investigate the stability of the system across the parameter space and determines stable and unstable regions of the design parameters of the system.
Heat dissipation technology using flow resonant phenomenon is a kind of new concept in heat transfer area. A vibration exciter is needed to generate air turbulence which has the natural shedding frequency of heat system. A mechanical vibrating device for the air flow oscillation is introduced, which is driven by a moving coil actuator. An analytical dynamic model for this mechanical vibration exciter is presented and its validity is verified by the comparison with experimental data. Values of some unknown system parameters in the analytic model are estimated through the system identification approach. Based on this mathematical model, a high bandwidth vibration phase, it turns out the high modal resonant characteristics of vibrating plate are the major barrier against obtaining a high bandwidth vibration exciter.
A novel cooling method induced by acoustic streaming generated by ultrasonic vibration at 30㎑ is presented. Ultrasonic vibration is obtained by piezoelectric devices and the maximum vibration amplitude of 50 m is achieved by including a horn, mechanical vibration amplifier in the system and making the complete system resonate. To investigate the enhancement of heat transfer capability of acoustic streaming, the temperature variations of heat source and air in the vicinity of heat source are measured in real-time. It is observed that acoustic streaming is instantly induced by ultrasonic vibration, resulting in the significant temperature drop due to the bulk air flow caused by acoustic streaming. In addition, it is observed that the cooling effect on the heat source is maximized when the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source coincides with the multiples of half-wavelength of the ultrasonic wave. This fact results from the resonance of the sound wave. The theoretical analysis of the dependence on the gap is also accomplished and verified by experiment. The advantage of the proposed cooling method by acoustic streaming is noise-free due to the ultrasonic vibration and maintenance-free because of the absence of moving parts. Moreover. This cooling method can be utilized to the nano and micro-electro mechanical systems, where the fan-based conventional cooling method can not be employed.

This study aimed to understand the internal flow characteristics of a liquid droplet subject to periodic forced vibration. In order to predict the resonance frequency of a droplet, a high-speed camera and macro lens were used to capture internal flow characteristics of a droplet placed on a vibrating hydrophobic surface. Results showed that the droplet assumed a variety of shapes depending on the resonance mode of free droplet, particularly in modes 2, 4, 6, and 8. In addition, the induced internal vortex flow inside the droplet was also observed in each mode. Typically, the induced flow moved upwards along the axis of symmetry and downwards along the surface of the droplet, that is, from the apex to the contact line in modes 2 and 4, after which it broke into a smaller vortex. On the other hand, the large-scale vortex always remained steady in modes 6 and 8. The speed of the flow in mode 4 was always greater than that in mode 2, but those in modes 6 and 8 were similar.

A novel resonant pulse control technique which generates high-quality sinusoidal output voltage from a resonant dc link inverter is presented for UPS applicatons. The proposed control technique limits resonant voltae overshoot without any passive or active clamp circuit, resulting in resonant pulses iwth uniform amplitude and high efficiency. The output voltage is controlled by the third order contorller iwth an inner loop of th efilter inductor current and the feedforward controller. Analysis and design of the proposed control technique are illustrated and verified on a 5kVA experimental unit.

The stabilities of a pinned-pinned straight pipe conveying fluid are investigated by complexification-averaging method. The flow is assumed to vary harmonically about a constant mean velocity. Instability conditions of a governing equation are analytically obtained about parametric primary, secondary and combination resonances. The resulted stability conditions show that instabilities exist when the frequency of flow fluctuation is close to one and two times the natural frequency or to the sum of any two natural frequencies. In case that the fluctuated flow frequency is close to the difference of two natural frequencies, instabilities does not exist.

The interaction between wall blowing and oxidizer flow can generate a very complicated flow characteristics in combustion chamber of hybrid rockets. LES analysis was conducted with an in-house CFD code to investigate the features of turbulent flow without chemical reactions. The numerical results reveal that the flow oscillations at a certain frequency exists on the fuel surface, which is analogous to those observed in the solid propellant combustion. However, the observation of oscillating flow at a certain frequency is only limited to a very thin layer adjacent to wall surface and the strength of the oscillation is not strong enough to induce the drastic change in temperature gradient on the surface. The visualization of fluctuating pressure components shows the periodic appearance of relatively high and low pressure regions along the axial direction. This subsequently results in the oscillation of flow at a certain fixed frequency. This implies that the resonance phenomenon would be possible if the external disturbances such as acoustic excitation could be imposed to the oscillating flow in the combustion chamber.

Effects of mean flow and nozzle damping on acoustic tuning of a gas-liquid scheme coaxial injector are investigated numerically adopting a linear acoustic analysis. The injector plays a role as a half-wave acoustic resonator for acoustic damping in a combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine. As Mach number of mean flow in a chamber increases, the resonant frequency of the first tangential mode decreases slightly and the optimum injector tuning length varies negligibly. Nozzle damping affects neither the resonant frequency nor the optimum length. From these numerical results, effects of mean flow and nozzle damping on acoustic tuning of a resonator are negligible. As open area of the injectors increases, the acoustic amplitude decreases, but new injector-coupled modes appear.

Thermal Marangoni flow has been observed inside droplets on heated surfaces, finally resulting in a coffee stain effect. This study aims to visualize and control the thermal Marangoni flow by employing periodic vertical vibration. The variations in the contact angle and internal volume of the droplet as it evaporates is observed by using a combination of continuous light and a still camera. With regard to the internal velocity, the particle image velocimetry system is applied to visualize the internal thermal Marangoni flow. In order to estimate the internal temperature gradient and surface tension on the surface of a droplet, the theoretical model based on the conduction and convection theory of heat transfer is applied. Thus, the internal velocity increases with an increase in plate temperature. The flow directions of the Marangoni and gravitational flows are opposite, and hence, it may be possible to control the coffee stain effect.
