  • This paper aims to propose new reentry guidance for Korean Space plane (KSP). Similar to the Space Shuttle guidance concept, a reference drag profile is first determined to satisfy several flight path constraints and boundary conditions, and the proposed guidance commands are realized in a way to track the predetermined reference drag profile. To this end, the drag dynamics is examined. The investigation uncovers that the dynamics characteristics of the drag and the flight path angle are considerably different. Based on this fact, the proposed guidance commands are determined using the time-scale separation technique and the feedback linearization methodology. The key feature of the proposed guidance lies in its simple structure and a clear working mechanism. Therefore, the proposed method is simple to implement compared to existing methods. Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the performance of the proposed method.

  • During the aircraft conceptual design stage, rapid aerodynamic analyses over various configurations are required. Hence, empirical and analytical methods play important roles in predicting the aero-dynamic characteristics. In this study, total drag estimation method based on empirical and analytical approaches is developed. By comparing with the results of the wind tunnel experiment and existing prediction methods, it is demonstrated that the developed method is accurate and useful in predicting total drag for the whole Mach number range.

  • Aircraft fuel efficiency is one of main concerns to aircraft manufacturers and to aviation companies because jet fuel price has tripled in last ten years. One of simple and effective methods to increase fuel efficiency is to reduce aircraft induced drag by using of wingtip devices. Induced drag is closely related to the circulation distribution, which produces strong wingtip vortex behind the tip of a finite wing. Wingtip devices including winglets can be successfully applied to reduce induced drag by wingtip vortex mitigation. Winglet design, however, is very complicated process and has to consider many parameters including installation position, height, taper ratio, sweepback, airfoil, toe-out angle and cant angle of winglets. In current research, different shapes of winglets are compared in the view of vortex mitigation. Appropriately designed winglets are proved to mitigate wingtip vortex and to increase lift to drag ratio. Also, the results show that winglets are more efficient than wingtip extension. That is the reason B-747-400 and B-737-800 chose winglets instead of a span increase to increase payload and range. Drag polar comparison chart is presented to show that minimum drag is increased by viscous drag of winglet, but at high lift, total drag is reduced by induced drag decrease. So, winglets are more efficient for aircraft that cruises at a high lift condition, which generates very strong wingtip vortex.

  • The authors carried out an experiment to measure the hydrodynamic resistance of the gear and the efficiency of otter board of the midwater trawl, which is the same used in the former experiment in this series of studies. The whole resistance of the gear was measured by a 10 ton scale recording tension meter, and they were analyzed into the shearing force and the drag with relevant factors determined in the former experiments. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The whole drag of gear T(kg) and the drag of net R sub(N) (kg) can be expressed as T=2.15 v super(1.12). R sub(N)=1.96 v super(1.01) (v: towing speed in m/sec) 2. The formula of estimating the drag of net deduced by Koyama's method can be expressed as R sub(N)=4.3$\times$d/l$\times$abv 3. The shearing force and the drag of otter board is about 19 to 22% and 5 to 7% of the drag of net, respectively. Whereas, the shearing coefficient and the drag coefficient calculated by the resistance and the opening of gear are 1.5 and 0.42, respectively.

  • Expressions for the lift and the drag exerted on a circular cylinder by an unsteady flow of an ideal fluid with embedded discrete vortices are derived. The formulae can be used in the discrete vortex method of flow simulation. These formulae are derived via contour integration on the complex plane. Terms have been produced which are significantly different from those in Sarpkaya's formulae. These are expected to bring a change to the forces obtained so far.

  • In order to develop a convenient method for the estimation of transport distance of settling stones in quiescent water or flowing water, introduced was the simple but relatively accurate equation of drag coefficient. The equation of drag coefficient introduced was confirmed to give relatively accurate evaluation for the drag force of smooth-surface sphere, and the effects of surface roughness and shape can be considered by adjusting empirical parameters. A theoretical equation has been developed for the settling velocity or settling distance of smooth-surface sphere in quiescent fluid, and the computation results have been obtained by adjusting the empirical parameter for the settling distance of stone in quiescent water. The 2nd order ordinary differential equation has been developed for the case of settling stones in flowing fluid, and a numerical model has been developed by using Runge-Kutta method for its solution. A number of cases have been tested by adjusting the empirical parameter.

  • Vegetation drag tends to raise water level by retarding the flow. Previous studies have focussed on either the vertical structure modeling or the one-dimensional modeling, which can hardly be used to simulate the vegetative streams in practical engineering. Therefore, this paper presents a two-dimensional numerical model based on the depth-averaged flow equations. Vegetation drags are reflected in the flow equations, assuming non-flexible rigid cylinders. For validations, flow properties measured in both rectangular and compound channels are compared with simulated data, showing good agreement. Then, the model is applied to a reach in the Han River and the impact of floodplain vegetation on the flow is investigated.

  • This paper investigates the impacts of the drag-related weighting coefficients on mean velocity and turbulence structures. The transport equations for the Reynolds stress of vegetated open-channel flows are derived by using the temporal- and horizontal-averaging scheme. It is found that the total Reynolds stress of vegetated open channel flows consists of the Reynolds stress due to temporally fluctuating velocities and the Reynolds stress due to spatially fluctuating velocities. The drag-related weighting coefficient $C_{fk}$ for the total Reynolds stress component is found to be unit, while the coefficient for the Reynolds stress due to temporally fluctuating velocities can be negligible. This is the reason why very small weighting coefficients in previous studies yield very good agreements with measured data. In other words, the Reynolds stress due to spatially fluctuating velocities remains still unknown, especially due to the large number of measuring locations. Through a developed Reynolds stress model, vegetated open-channel flows are simulated and compared with measured data from the literature. Comparisons reveal that the computed mean flow and Reynolds stress structures are hardly affected by the drag-related weighting coefficients. However, the computed turbulence intensity profiles are significant different with the drag-related weighting coefficients. A budget analysis of the transport equations for the Reynolds stress component is carried to investigate why turbulence intensity is affected by the drag-related weighting coefficients.
