The information about organic and biomass fractions in sewage is essential for the optimal operation and model calibration of biological treatment processes. In the respect of that oxygen is directly associated with respiration and growth of biomass as well as substrate reduction, the respirometry is well known as a suitable method for the analysis of wastewater composition and active biomass. Thus, the organic and biomass fractions in sewage were measured using respirometry. The fraction of readily biodegradable substrate, slowly biodegradable substrate, inert soluble substrate and inert particular substrate are about 10-16%, 1-8%, 32-50% and 2-47%, respectively. The active heterotrophic biomass fraction is about 10-24%, but the autotrophic biomass was not detected in influent sewage.

This study investigates the characteristics of the GAC adsorption behavior during the operation of a multi-stage cross-flow filtration and GAC adsorption process for the purpose of devising an advanced treatment of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and evaluates the regeneration efficiency of spent GAC that has reached the design breakpoint. During the filtration process, suspended substances are easily removed, but dissolved organic substances are not removed, necessitating a process capable of removing dissolved organic substances for the advanced treatment of CSOs. In general, GAC adsorption has been applied under low-concentration organic conditions, such as for water purification and tertiary treatments of sewage, and has rarely been applied under conditions with high organic concentrations, such as with sewage or CSOs. Accordingly, this study will provide a new and interesting experience. Also in this study, the continuous operation and breakthrough characteristics of GAC according to the strength of the inflow organic matter were investigated, electrochemical regeneration was applied to the used GAC, and the regeneration efficiency was evaluated through desorption and re-adsorption tests. The results showed that the breakthrough period was 21 days under high concentration conditions, 28 days at medium concentrations, and 32 days under low concentration conditions. The desorption of adsorbed organic matter through electrolysis occurred in the range of 188 to 609 mgCOD/L depending on the electrolysis conditions, and the effect of the electrolyte type led to the finding that NaOH was slightly higher than H2O2.
Dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) dissolved hydrolyzable amino acid (DHAA) and D/L amino acid racemic ratio in the dissolved organic compounds were studied to investigate the biogeochemical characteristics of dissolved organic compound in the Yellow Sea. Concentration of total DFAA ranged from 0.06 uM to 0.26 uM in the study area. DFAA composition showed that aspiratae, glutamate, serine, glycine and alanine were predominant. According to characteristics of functional group of amino acid, these belonged to hydroponic group. C-18 short column cartridge (Sep-Pak) activated by methanol was used to extract organic macromolecules in the seawater. In operational scheme, macromolecules were divided into two fractions. Geomacromolecule fraction eluted with 50% methanol was used to extract organic macromolecules in the seawater. In operational scheme, macromolecules were divided into two fractions. Geomacromolecule fraction eluted with 50% methanol was moderately hydrophilic and showed characteristics of humic substance in the seawater. Biomacromolecule fraction eluted with 100% methanol was hydrophobic and most abundant in the surface seawater samples. DHAA was much higher than DFAA in this study area. DHAA ranged from 2.05 uM to 6.19 uM in the B-fraction and from 8.13 uM to 24.46 uM in the G-fraction. DHAA was higher in the surface water than in the bottom water where the vertical stratification developed well. The result of HPLC analysis of D/L amino acid showed that low racemic ratio was found in the B-fraction. It implies that the B-fraction is relatively younger than the G-fraction and freshly derived from biosphere.

We prepared flocculated detritus-like organic marine snow originating from various organisms by fermentation using microorganisms; this fermented organic material was fed to the leptocephali of the eel (Anguilla japonica) to investigate whether or not such organic matter was an appropriate food source for the larvae. A strain was isolated from a biofloc technology system used to culture fish, and seven types of organic material from hen's egg, eel muscle, tuna muscle, lugworm, shrimp, manila clam, mussel, and sea squirt were fermented using isolated bacteria (Bacillus sp.). The fermented matter did not show any specific form and was larger than $10-20{\mu}m$ but no more than $100{\mu}m$ in size. Four diets (A-D) were prepared using the various fermented products, and the larvae were fed the prepared food from 20 days after hatching. The leptocephali fed the A, B, and C diets survived until 37, 39, and 37 days after hatching, respectively. However, the leptocephali fed the D diet survived for 60 days after hatching. The protein content of each diet was very similar, but the n-3 HUFA concentration in the D diet was approximately twice as high as that of the others.

This study was performed to investigate the distribution and decomposition characteristics of organic matter in stream water and sewage effluent located in Gwangju. Average of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to total organic carbon (TOC) ratio was approximately 73.9% in the Youngsan river system. The concentration of refractory dossolved carbon (RDOC) was 3.7 mg/L corresponding to 80.9% of the DOC. The ratio of recalcitrant organic carbon was relatively higher than that of biodegradable organic carbon in stream. Oxidation efficiencies in the stream were 45.0% for BOD, 63.0% for $COD_{Mn}$ and 106.5% for CODcr. In case of sewage effluent was 33.6%, 65.7% and 136.1% respectively. Mean decomposition rate ($K_d$) of Youngsan river mainstream, its tributary sites and sewage effluent were about $0.042\;day^{-1}$, $0.043\;day^{-1}$ and $0.028\;day^{-1}$, respectively and the difference was not significant between the mainstream and its tributary sites (t-test, p>0.05). $K_d$ of the sewage effluent was lower than that of stream water.

The strain Ralstonia eutopha JMP134 (formerly Alcaligenes eutrophus JMP134) can degrade trichloroethylene(TCE) through a chromosomal phenol-dependent pathway. The phenol hydroxylase was previously found to be a single responsible enzyme for TEC degradation. Here, we demonstrate that a recombinant bacterium, R. eutopha AEK301, one of Tn5-induced mutants of JMP134 containing a recombinant plasmid pYK3011, degrades TCE in the absence of inducer, phenol and in the presence of various carbon sources. Complete removal of TCE ($50{\mu}M$) was observed in minimal medium containing only 0.05% ethanol as a carbon source within 24 hours. The bacterium removed $200{\mu}M$ of TCE to below detectable level within two days under non-selective pressure. When TCE concentration was increased up to $400{\mu}M$, the degradation had been continued until two days, then ceased with removal of 70% of detectable TCE.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mechanical mixing intensity on composting. The major parameters investigated were the mixing intensity and initial moisture content. Laboratory scale composting reactors with mixing equipment were used in this study. Wastes used for the study were raw nightsoil sludge, nightsoil sludge after vacuum evaporation treatment and pig manure. When moisture contents were 60% and 63%, amount of organic material degraded in the continuous mixing reactors was higher than that in the intermittent mixing reactors. Compost produced from reactors with continuous mixing had better texture than that obtained from reactors with intermittent mixing. When moisture content was 68%, organic waste was kneaded rather than mixed in the continuous mixing reactors. Amount of organic material degraded in the continuous mixing reactors also was lower than that in the intermittent mixing reactors.
These studies were carried out to investigate the effects of rice straw on microflora in relation to the decomposition of organic matter, and the rate of rice straw decomposition. The number of total bacteria was increased in the first stage, and the number of microorganisms in upper layer was generally larger than lower layer. The number of fungi tended to decline as rice plant grew. Aerobacter among cellulose decomposition bacteria decreased with time, and the number of microorganisms in lower layer was higher than upper layer. The number of glucose decomposition bacteria and sulfate reducing bacteria increased in the submerged soil to which rice straw was applied, but decreased by percolation. the change of manganese oxidizing bacteria seemed not to be affected by rice straw application while they tend to increase as the rice plant grew. The aspect of microorganisms in the percolated water was same that of lower layer, but the number was low as much $10^{-1}$ during the whole stages. The decomposition rate of rice straw applied to submerged soil was about 40 per cent during the rice grew. The decomposition rate of cellulose contained rice straw was about 30 per cent, and lignin was about 60 per cent. The 70-80 per cent of nitrogen remained in the rice straw applied to soil.

Changes in spectroscopic characteristics and pyrene binding coefficients of terrestrial dissolved organic matters(DOM) were investigated during microbial incubation. The incubation studies were conducted for 21 days using a leaf litter DOM and a soilderived DOM with an inoculum from a river. The dissolved organic carbon(DOC), the specific UV absorbance(SUVA), the synchronous fluorescence spectra, and the pyrene organic carbon-normalized binding coefficient(K$_{oc}$) of the DOM were measured at the incubation days of 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21. After the 21-day incubation, DOC were reduced to 61% and 51% of the original concentrations of the litter DOM and the soil-derived DOM, respectively. Comparison of the spectroscopic characteristics before and after the incubation revealed that the SUVA, the fulvic-like fluorescence(FLF), the humic-like fluorescence(HLF) of the different DOM were enhanced by the incubation whereas the protein-like fluorescence(PLF) was reduced. This indicates that more aromatic and humic-like compounds were enriched during the biodegradation process while biodegradable and weak carbon structures were depleted. Irrespective of the DOM sources, SUVA values showed a positive relationship with pyrene K$_{oc}$ with a correlation coefficient of 0.97. The FLF and HLF also exhibited good correlations with K$_{oc}$ values although different regression equations were obtained from the different DOM. Our results suggest that the selected spectroscopic characteristics could be good estimation indices for the changes of the binding reactivity of DOM for hydrophobic organic contaminants during biodegradation process.
