  • A high-resolution electro-optical camera system, EOS-C, is under development in Satrec Initiative. This system is the mission payload of a 400-kg Earth observation satellite. We designed this system to give improved opto-mechanical and thermal performance compared with a similar camera system to be flown on the DubaiSat-1 system. The thermal control subsystem (TCS) of the EOS-C system uses heaters to meet the opto-mechanical requirements during in-orbit operation and it uses different thermal coating materials and multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets to minimize the heater power consumption. We performed its thermal analysis for the mission orbit using a thermal analysis model and the result shows that its TCS satisfies the design requirements.

  • This paper introduces the development of temperature mapping code between thermal mesh and structural mesh in KARI Satellite Design Software. Generally, temperature distribution of a satellite varies with the time by the space environment of the orbit, so thermal expansion of the structure should be analysed in design of the satellite. For the sake of the coupled thermal structural analysis, an interpolation algorithm between two finite element heterogeneous grids has been proposed by which temperature transfer is successively conducted.

  • In this study, thermal model for backplane of GPS antenna in Low Earth Orbit Satellite is updated and orbit thermal analysis is performed. The analysis is focused on the safehold mode of satellite. During the safehold mode, the solar panel is constantly looking to the Sun, and there is not a mission maneuvering. Therefore, antenna backplane receives the maximum heat influx considering the End-Of-Life condition. To maintain the temperature of antenna within allowable limits, radiating tape is applied and its area is determined. Besides, to verify the lowest temperature of the antenna, cold case with Begin-Of-Life analysis is also performed.

  • The north and south panel of a geostationary satellite are used for radiator panels to reject internal heat and utilize several heat pipe networks to control the temperatures of units and the main structures of satellite within proper ranges. The design of these panels is very important and essential at the conceptual design and preliminary satellite design stage, so several thousands of nodes or more are utilized in order to perform detailed thermal analysis of panel. Generating a large number of panel nodes takes time and is tedious work because the nodes can be easily changed and updated by locations of units and heat pipes. Also the detailed panel model can not be integrated into spacecraft thermal model due to its node size and limitation of commercial satellite thermal analysis program. Thus development of a program was required to generate a detailed panel model, to perform thermal analysis and to make a reduced panel model for the integration to the satellite thermal model. This paper describes the development and the verification of the panel thermal analysis program with its main modules and functions.

  • This study addresses space simulation test results and thermal modelling verification of HAUSAT-2 nanosatellite STM (Structural-Thermal Model). The thermal modelling of the HAUSAT-2 has been modified in accordance with test results. Thermal analysis results were repeatedly compared with test results for modified thermal modelling. It is verified that the analysis results for modified thermal modelling agree well with test results. Some surface heaters were implemented to simulate solar illumination for HAUSAT-2 Thermal Vacuum/Balance Test. A low-cost and effective thermal test methodology, which is applicable to ultra-small satellite system, was proposed and verified by test results in this study.

  • A heat dissipation modeling method of EEE parts is developed for thermal design and analysis of an satellite electronic equipment. The power consumption measurement value of each functional breadboard is used for the heat dissipation modeling method. For the purpose of conduction heat transfer modeling of EEE parts, surface heat model using very thin ignorable thermal plates is considered instead of conventional lumped capacity nodes. These modeling methods are applied to the thermal design and analysis of CTU EM and EQM and verified by thermal cycling and vacuum tests.

  • A heat dissipation modeling method of EEE parts, or semi-empirical heat dissipation method, is developed for thermal design and analysis an electronic equipment of geostationary satellite. The power consumption measurement value of each functional breadboard is used for the heat dissipation modeling method. For the purpose of conduction heat transfer modeling of EEE parts, surface heat model using very thin ignorable thermal plates is developed instead of conventional lumped capacity nodes. The thermal plates are projected to the printed circuit board and can be modeled and modified easily by numerically preprocessing programs according to design changes. These modeling methods are applied to the thermal design and analysis of CTU (Command and Telemetry Unit) and verified by thermal cycling and vacuum tests.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and was developed by KARI for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. COMS was tested under vacuum and very low temperature conditions in order to correlate thermal model and to verify thermal design. The test was performed by using KARI large thermal vacuum chamber. The COMS S/C thermal model was successfully correlated versus the 2 thermal balance test phases. After model correlation, temperatures deviation of all individual units were less than $5^{\circ}C$ and global deviation and standard deviation also satisfied the requirements, less than $2^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$. The final flight prediction was performed by using the correlated thermal model.
