In this paper, underwater acoustic communication experiment was carried out to test a performance of single carrier digital modulation schemes. The communication experiment was performed at real sea and tested modulation schemes are ASK, FSK with non-coherent detection and QPSK with coherent detection. A modulated image data was transmitted with data rates of 600bps~3Kbps. From the results of BER of the demodulated signal, ASK and FSK show the achievable BER of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-4}$ without compensation techniques and QPSK show that of $10^{-4}$ with linear equalizer.
This paper presents techniques for estimating directions of multiple sound sources ranging from $0^{\circ}$ to $360^{\circ}$ using circular probability distributions having a periodic property. Phase differences containing direction information of sources can be modeled as mixtures of multiple probability distributions and source directions can be estimated by maximizing log-likelihood functions. Although the von Mises distribution is widely used for analyzing this kind of periodic data, we define a new class of circular probability distributions from Gaussian and Laplacian distributions by adopting a modulo operation to have $2{\pi}$-periodicity. Direction estimation with these circular probability distributions is done by implementing corresponding EM (Expectation-Maximization) algorithms. Simulation results in various reverberant environments confirm that Laplacian distribution provides better performance than von Mises and Gaussian distributions.
Passive source depth estimation has been studied for decades since the source depth can be used for target classification, target tracking, etc. The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem of ambiguity in the previous paper [S.-il. Cho et al. (in Korean), J. Acoust. Soc. Kr. 38, 120-127 (2019)] that source depth is estimated in two points. The patterns of phase shift of Channel Impulse Response(CIR) reflected in ocean surface and bottom is used for removing ambiguity of the source depth estimation, and after removing ambiguity, source depth is estimated at one point through the intersection of CIR. In order to extract CIR in case of unknown source signal and continuous signal or noise, Ray-based blind deconvolution is used. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulation in ocean waveguide.

Echo generated in digital hearing aid vent give rise to user's discomfort. For cancelling feedback echo in vent, it is required to estimate vent impulse response exactly. The vent impulse response has time varying and sparse characteristics. The IPNLMS has been known a useful adaptive algorithm to estimate vent impulse response with these characteristics. In this paper, subband sparse adaptive filter which applying IPNLMS to subband hearing aid structure is proposed to cancel echo of vent by estimating sparse vent impulse response. In the propose method, the decomposition of input signal to subband can pre-whiten each subband signal, so adaptive filter convergence speed can be improved. And the poly phase component decomposition of adaptive filter increases sparsity of each components, and the better echo cancellation can be possible without additional computation. To derive coefficients update equation of the adaptive filter, by defining the cost function based weight NLMS is defined, and the coefficient update equation of each subband is derived. For verifying performances of the adaptive filter, convergence speed, and steady state error by white signal input, and echo cancelling results by real speech input are evaluated by comparing conventional adaptive filters.

This paper deals with the performance improvement by eliminating loop interference signal and inserting adaptive equalizer for phase compensation in OFDMA based Wibro relay station. The Wibro relay station is used for the extension of communication service area and for throughput improvement of base station. The loop interference is important factor of performance determination of relay station when transmitter and receiver is very closely located. In order to design interference canceller, we generated base-band OFDMA signal and then transmitted the signal along with pilot tones alined with two different combinations for training mode. And then, we generated received fading signal due to the loop interference added noise to the received signal. In the receiver, the transmitted signal is recovered by elimination of the interference signal with channel estimate and compensating phase by adaptive equalizer. The performance improvement was verified by computer simulation which show channel estimation, constellation of signal and BER characteristics according to the variation of SNR ratio.

In this paper, self-calibration algorithm based on covariance matrix is proposed for compensating amplitude/phase mismatch in multi-baseline interferometer direction finding system. The proposed method is a solution to nonlinear constrained minimization problem which dramatically calibrate mismatch error using space sector concept with cost function as defined in this paper. This method, however, has a drawback that requires an estimated initial angle to determine the proper space sector. It is well known that this type of drawback is common in nonlinear optimization problem. Superior calibration capabilities achieved with this approach are illustrated by simulation experiments in comparison with interferometer algorithm for a varitiety of amplitude/phase mismatch error. Furthermore, this approach has been found to provide an exceptional calibration capabilities even in case amplitude and phase mismatch are more than 30 dB and over $5^{\circ}$, respectively, with sector spacing of less than $50^{\circ}$.

This paper presents a new rotor position estimation method for brushless DC motors. It is clear that the estimation error of the rotor position provokes the phase shift angle misaligned between the phase current and the back-EMF waveforms, which causes torque ripple in brushless DC motor drives. Such an estimation error can be reduced with the help of the proposed neutral voltage-based estimation method that is structured in the form of a closed loop observer. A neutral voltage appearing during the normal mode of the inverter operation is found to be an observable and controllable measure, which can be dealt with for estimating an exact rotor position. This neutral voltage is obtained from the DC-link current, the switching logic, and the motor speed values. The proposed algorithm, which can be implemented easily by using a single DC-link current and the motor terminal voltage sensors, is verified by simulation and experiment results.
The interpretation of observed waveform characteristics identified in refraction and wide-angle reflection data increases confidence in the crustal structure model obtained. When calculating traveltimes and raypaths, wavefront methods on a regular grid based on graph theory are robust even with complicated structures, but basically compute only first arrivals. In this paper, we develop new algorithms to compute traveltimes and raypaths not only for first arrivals, but also for fast and later reflection arrivals, later refraction arrivals, and converted waves between P and S, using the modified wavefront method based on slowness network nodes mapped on a multi-layer model. Using the new algorithm, we can interpret reflected arrivals, Pg-later arrivals, strong arrivals appearing behind Pn, triplicated Moho reflected arrivals (PmP) to obtain the shape of the Moho, and phases involving conversion between P and S. Using two models of an ocean-continent transition zone and an oceanic ridge or seamount, we show the usefulness of this algorithm, which is confirmed by synthetic seismograms using the 2D Finite Difference Method (2D-FDM). Characteristics of arrivals and raypaths of the two models differ from each other in that using only first-arrival traveltime data for crustal structure analysis involves risk of erroneous interpretation in the ocean-continent transition zone, or the region around a ridge or seamount.

Various satellite sensors having ranges of the visible, infrared, and thermal wavelengths have been launched due to the improvement of hardware technologies of satellite sensors development. According to the development of satellite sensors with various wavelength ranges, the fusion and integration of multisensor images are proceeded. Image matching process is an essential step for the application of multisensor images. Some algorithms, such as SIFT and SURF, have been proposed to co-register satellite images. However, when the existing algorithms are applied to extract matching points between optical and thermal images, high accuracy of co-registration might not be guaranteed because these images have difference spectral and spatial characteristics. In this paper, location of control points in a reference image is extracted by SURF, and then, location of their corresponding pairs is estimated from the correlation of the local similarity. In the case of local similarity, phase correlation method, which is based on fourier transformation, is applied. In the experiments by simulated, Landsat-8, and ASTER datasets, the proposed algorithm could extract reliable matching points compared to the existing SURF-based method.
The success of target reconstruction in SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging system is greatly dependent on the coherent detection. Primary causes of incoherent detection are uncompensated target or sensor motion, random turbulence in propagation media, wrong path in radar platform, and etc. And these appear as multiplicative phase error to the echoed signal, which consequently, causes fatal degradations such as fading or dislocation of target image. In this paper, we present iterative phase error estimation scheme which uses echoed data in all temporal frequencies. We started with analyzing wave equation for one point target and extend to overall echoed data from the target scene - The two wave equations governing the SAR signal at two temporal frequencies of the radar signal are combined to derive a method to reconstruct the complex phase error function. Eventually, this operation attains phase error correction algorithm from the total received SAR signal. We verify the success of the proposed algorithm by applying it to the simulated spotlight-mode SAR data.
