This paper presents a new computational algorithm of phase-shifting interferometry which can effectively eliminate the uncertainty errors of the reference phases encountered in obtaining multiple interferograms. The algorithm treats the reference phases as additional unknowns and determines their exact values by analyzing interferograms using numerical least square technique. A series of simulations prove that this algorithm can improve measuring accuracy being unaffected by the nonlinear and random errors of phase-shifters.

Automation systems are evolving in many areas of industry in recent years. At the same time, the necessity of the height inspection of the object by the 3D measurement is gradually increasing. Among the various 3D measurement methods, this paper discusses phase measuring profilometry(PMP). The PMP is a method of obtaining the height of an object using the phase value of the fringe pattern. Since the PMP is an algorithm requiring a large amount of computation, a method for efficiently solving the problem is needed. In this paper, we propose to use CUDA from NVIDIA to solve this problem. We also propose using pinned memory and streams provided by CUDA. This can greatly improve the measurement speed while maintaining accuracy. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through experiments.

We propose a method for simultaneously measuring the front and back surface profiles of transparent optical components. The proposed method combines dual-wavelength transmission deflectometry with liquids to record distorted phases at different wavelengths, and then numerically reconstructs the three-dimensional phase information to image the front and back surfaces of the lens. We propose a theoretical model to determine the surface information, and a bifocal lens is experimentally investigated. Unlike conventional transmission deflectometry, our proposed method supports direct observation of the front and back surface profiles of the optical elements.

This paper presents the experimental results measured by photoelastic 4-step phase shifting method for the isochromatic fringe distribution in a TV glass panel. In the conventional photoelastic method, the isochromatic fringe orders are measured manually point by point. The 4-step phase shifting method uses four images obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer to $0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}$, and $135^{\circ}$. In order to use the 4-step phase shifting method, the elements of a polariscope should be aligned to isoclinic direction at a point and/or along a line where isochromatic fringe distribution is measured. Experimental results obtained from the 4-step phase shifting method are compared with those measured by the Senarmont compensation method. Both results are well agreed. Then, isochromatic fringe distributions in the TV glass panel that is heat-treated before and after are compared. Maximum and minimum isochromatic fringe orders in the TV glass panel with before- and after-heat treatment are changed approximately two times.

In this paper, a prediction and compensation method for the error in the phase measured by using the proportionality between two wavelengths in the TW-PMP (Two-wavelength Phase Measuring Profilometry) is proposed and experimental results are shown to verify the usefulness of the proposed method. For sample object, firstly, a phase-shifting with a quite large number of steps is adopted in measurement, compared with the conventional phase-shifting method, secondly, a 3-3 step phase-shifting method is used to measure the same object which is applied to high-speed 3D shape measurement, and then, measured results from these two phase-shifting methods are compared to calculate measurement noises. From the experimental results applying the proposed compensation method to the measured beat phase and absolute phase, it has proven that noises are decreased by 90% and 17.2% for each case.
Phase detector techique provides a unique probe to membrane recycling phenomenon by enabling dynamic monitoring of cell membrane capacitance. However, it has inherent errors due to constant changes in measurement environments. The present study analyzed several error sources to develope application criteria of this technique. and the following was found based on a theoretical analysis. The initial phase angle has to be appropriately selected to minimize the error due to perturbation of access and membrane conductances. Excitation frequency is also important to determine the initial phase angle. However. deviation of the phase angle from a predetermined initial value during the measurement period does not affect capacitance estimation to a significant degree. Despite an appropriate initial phase selection an error in scaling factor is expected for a large increase in capacitance during exocytosis. which may be overcome by iteratively correcting the scaling factor over the measurement period. These results will provide a useful guideline in practical application of this technique.

The method of photoelasticity allows one to obtain principal stress differences and principal stress directions in a photoelastic model. In the classical approach, the photoelastic parameters are measured manually point by point. The previous methods require much time and skill in the identification and measurement of photoelastic data. Fringe phase shifting method has been recently developed and widely used to measure and analyze fringe data in photo-mechanics. This paper presents the test results of photoelastic fringe phase shifting technique for the stress analysis of a circular disk under compression and an edge-cracked plate subjected to tensile load. The technique used here requires four phase stepped photoelastic images obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer at $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$. Experimental results are compared with those or FEM. Good agreement between the results can be observed. However, some error may be included if the technique is used to general direction which is not parallel to isoclinic fringe.

The thickness of a Si3N4 thin film with a 100m nominal thickness was measured by use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The map of the phase-delay through the thin film was obtained by an interframe intensity-correlation-matrix method that could elliminate phase-shifting errors. After the spatial phase-shifting errors were treated with a least-squares method, the reference to surface of the phase map was estimated. The overall accuracy of the method was found to be 5nm.
