  • The purpose of this study was to explore whether the concept of amount of invested mental effort (AIME) developed in the field of educational psychology can help explain why people put so little effort into online searching. In this experimental study, two information retrieval systems - a web search engine and a university library system - were used to make a comparison. The data were collected from 15 undergraduate students through background questionnaires, think-aloud protocols, search logs, post-search questionnaires, and post-task interviews. The findings indicate that perception of the web's "easy-ness" and high levels of self confidence in searching capability led the subjects to put less effort into web searching than they do into library system searching. In addition, the perceived difficulty of search task influenced the extent of mental effort invested. The AIME proved a useful framework for understanding search behavior and user experience for both web search engines and library systems.

  • Recently, as more web-based applications are widely used, various methods for education are developed in practical areas. As a result, in many organizations, virtual educations such as WBI learning. CAI, and distance learning are offered actively. With the advantages of web-based education, in order to achieve feasible and efficient effects on education. a new web-based instruction model that considers the abilities, the interests, and the aptitudes of students individually is required. In this paper, a new web-based instruction model, called a hybrid model, is proposed and implemented. And then, two model - the stepwise model and the hybrid model- are applied to a computer accounting class of a vocational high school. Students attend the web-based class in a computer center for 100 minutes autonomously. After the classes, a questionnaire is made in order to analyze both the effect on that class and the learning fulfillment of the proposed instruction model.

  • With the increase of the number of Internet users, various methodologies have been proposed for the effective design of web page. However, the prior methodologies have focused only on the functional aspect of web page while ignoring the emotional aspects of web pages. This paper focuses on the emotional design of home pages and aims to provide a methodology to design a web page suitable for goal emotions. In order to achieve the main purpose, we have conducted three related studies. First, we have identified basic emotional dimensions representing various feeling users have from web pages as a pool of emotional adjectives. Second, we have identified key design elements related to the emotion by observing the design process of expert designers. Third, we examined the causal relation between the perceived emotion and designed elements. The results indicate that some design elements are more effective to produce certain feeling than others. This paper ends with limitations and implications of the study results.
