An experimental research program providing knowledge to measure two-dimensional skin friction variation over a certain region of model surface is presented. In the oil-fringe imaging skin friction(FISF) technique, local slope of a thin oil applied on a test surface is measured from the interference fringe patterns on the oil surface, and its information is then related to the applied shear over the oil by the thin-oil lubrication theory. The FISF technique has been applied for a separation flowfield ahead of a circular cylinder vertically mounted on a flat plate, and it has been found that the FISF skin friction results show good comparison with the other numerical/experimental data obtained for similar conditions. implying an applicability of the technique.

The effect of reinforced circular hole in a flat plate under general biaxial loading conditions is considered. The reinforcement is achieved by attaching a circular ring of uniform rectangular cross section along the boundary of the hole. This investigation includes a theoretical solution and an experimental conformation. In the theoretical analysis, Gurney's method is used to obtain a solution for the stress distribution and the solution is expressed in a general form, so that it can be applicable to the case of general biaxial loading and general values of Poisson's ratios. In the experimental work a systematic series of photoelastic models, as shown in Fig.5 and Table 1, were analyzed on polariscope. The experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical ones, as shown in Fig.8 and 9. The conclusions derived are as follows: 1) The theoretical results, given in Eq. $(1){\sim}(5)$, are sufficient in accuracy for the engineering design purpose. 2) The stress concentration factor decreases as the ratio n increases, but not significant beyond n=3. 3) The stress concentration factor increase as the ratio m increases, but not significant below m=0.7.

An experimental study of jet impingement on the surface with linear temperature gradient is conducted with the presentation of the turbulent characteristics and the heat transfer rates measured when this jet impinges normally to a flat plate. The jet Reynolds number ranges from 30,000 to 90,000, the temperature gradient of the plate is 2~$4.2^{\circ}C$/cm and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance(H/D) is from 6 to 10. The results show that the peak of heat transfer rate occurs at the stagnation point, and the heat transfer rate decreases as the radial distance from the stagnation point increases. A remarkable feature of the heat transfer rate is the existence of the second peak. This is due to the turbulent development of the wall jet. Maximum heat transfer rate occurs when the axial distance from the nozzle to nozzle diameter(H/D) is 8. The heat transfer rate can be correlated as a power function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance(H/D). It has been found that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing turbulent intensity.

A simple outline for teaching adaptive scheme based finite element method for planar problems as a part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering curriculum is presented. Displacement based finite element formulation for planar problems and representative strain value based adaptive scheme for mesh generation are considered. As examples, a cantilever beam with a concentrated load treated as a planar problem and stretching of a plate with a circular hole are analyzed with displacement based finite element method with adaptive meshes. The examples and outlines show how adaptive based finite element method may become an essential part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering.
The evolution dynamics of nanoscale Ge islands on both Si (001) and (113) surfaces is explored using ultraviolet photoelectron emission microscopy (UV-PEEM). Real-time monitoring of the in-situ growth of the Ge island structures can allow us to study the variation of the size, the shape and the density of the nanostructures. For Ge depositions greater than ${\sim}4$ monolayer (ML) with a growth rate of ${\sim}0.4\;ML/min$ at temperatures of $450-550^{\circ}C$, we observed island nucleation on both surfaces indicating the transition from strained layer to island structure. During continuous deposition the circular islands grew larger via ripening processes. AFM measurements showed that the islands grown on Si (001) were dome-shaped while the islands on Si (113) were multiple-side faceted with flat tops of (113)-orientation. In contrast, for Ge deposition with a lower growth rate of ${\sim}0.15\;ML/min$ on Si(113), we observed the shape transition from circular into elongated island structures. The elongated islands grew longer along the [$33\bar{2}$] during continuous Ge deposition. The shape evolution of the islands is discussed in terms of strain relaxation and kinetic effects.

Photoelasticity is a useful technique for obtaining the differences and directions of principal stresses in a model. In conventional photoelasticity, the photoelastic parameters are measured manually point by point. Identifying and measuring photoelastic data is time-consuming and requires skill. The fringe phase shifting method was recently developed and has been found to be convenient for measuring and analyzing fringe data in photo-mechanics. This paper presents an experimental study on the stress distribution along a horizontal line that passes the central point of a rhombus plate made of Photoflex (i.e., type of urethane rubber). The isoclinic fringe and/or principal stress direction is constant on this horizontal line, so a four-bucket phase shifting method can be applied. The method requires four photoelastic fringes that are obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer at $0^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ and $135^{\circ}C$. Experimental measurements using the method were quantitatively compared with the results from FEM analysis; the results from the two methods showed comparable agreement.
Steam generator of a nuclear power plant has important rolls for the heat transfer and the isolation of radioactive materials. So bursting of the steam generator tube is directly related to the accident of nuclear power plants. Incone1600 has been used for the steam generator tube material. The material shows non-magnetic and metallic properties, eddy current NDT method has been employed for defects detection. In this work, a differential type of eddy current probe was developed to improve resolution of defect detection. To verify properties of the developed differential type eddy current probe, we have made reference material with SUS304 which has similar magnetic and electrical properties of Inconel600. Using the developed differential type eddy current probe, we can detect defect size of 0.25 mm in diameter and 0.2 mm in depth (volume of $1{\times}10^{-3}\;mm^3$) with the reference material.

This paper proposes the design of multiband repeater antenna with fire-fighting band for in-building mobile communication. The proposed antenna is composed of a center monopole and 4 parasitic elements on a circular plate. In order to realize good reflection coefficients at the multiband, mutual coupling between 4 parasitic elements and center monopole antenna is considered. The important parameters such as distance between parasitic element and a center monopole, and each height of a center monopole and 4 parasitic elements are simulated to obtain good antenna characteristics at the multiband. The diameter of 4 parasitic elements and a center monopole was fixed to 10 mm for easy design and manufacturing. The measurement results of reflection coefficients, 2-D patterns and gain agreed well with their simulation ones.

In this paper, general methods for enhancing the transmission efficiency through the small subwavelength aperture in an infinite conducting plane are considered first by use of the transmission-resonant aperture like the ridged circular aperture structure, second by employing the transmission-resonant cavity structure. In particular, the maximum transmission cross section is found to be $\frac{2G{\lambda}^2}{4{\pi}}[m^2]$ for the two structures, where G is the gain of the aperture in the output half space. As experimental works, the impedance matching characteristics are investigated for the cases that above two structures are incorporated as a potential near field microscopic probe in the waveguide end. As a complementary problem to the above transmission-resonant aperture problem, some discussions are also given on the scattering resonance by the scattering object much smaller than the wavelength. This discussion may provide a good understanding of the physics for the phenomena that the maximum scattering cross section is much larger than the physical size of the atom in atomic physics area.

Theoretical evaluations of the vertical displacement at the epicenter on the circular glass plate have been carried out in the case of the unit point loading(1 dyne force strength) with the Heaviside step-function time dependency. Acoustic emission signals generated during pencil lead($\Phi$=0.5mm, HB) fracture on the soda-lime glass($\Phi$=22cm, thickness=2.8cm) were observed by the optical Michelson interferometer with the stabilized circuit, and then the source function of the observed acoustic emission signals was analyzed by the deconvolution method. The source function of acoustic emission during pencil lead fracture had a 'dip' of~0.7$\mu$sec duration time at the front portion and a step function of~0.5$\mu$sec rise time with a force strength of~4.5N.
