  • Feeding ecology of Luciogobius guttatus (Flat-head goby) populations were investigated on the Youngjong, Incheon, Korea. In total, 257 individuals ranging from 13.4 to 57.5 mm standard length SL were analyzed. L. guttatus was studied in the Tide-pool from January 2010 to December 2010 monthly. The stomach contents of L. guttatus consisted mainly of Copepods and Brachyurans. Amphipods, Anomurans, Cumaceans, Macrurans, Insects and small stones were also observed. As a result, the benthic crustaceans were important food for this species. Harpacticoid spp. (Copepods) and Hemigrapsus spp. (Brachyurans) were major prey organisms for all fish size and seasons.

  • The flow induced by the oscillatory motion of a solid body is important in a number of practical problems. As the solid boundary oscillates harmonically, there is steady streaming motion invoked by the Reynolds stresses, which could cause extensive migration of the fluid during a period of fluid motion. We here analyzed the flow in a square cavity with an oscillating top wall for the parameters which make the time derivatives and the convective terms equally important in the entire cavity flow. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the second-order time accurate Momentum Coupling Method which is devised by the authors. The particular numerical scheme does not need subiteration at each time step which is usually a required process to calculate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The effect of two parameters, the Reynolds number and the frequency parameter, on the oscillatory flow has been investigated.

  • Three specimens of Abudefduf septemfasciatus were collected firstly from tidal pools on the southern and northern coasts of Jeju Island, Korea in August 2015. This species is characterized by black blotches on the upper origin of the pectoral fin, upper caudal peduncle and a dorsal fin between the second and fourth spines, predorsal scales beyond to above the middle of the eye, 12~13 soft dorsal and anal fin rays, and 20 lateral-line scales. This species is distinguishable from Abudefduf sordidus by soft dorsal and anal fin rays, location of caudal peduncle blotch, and location of the dorsal fin blotch. The newly proposed Korean name is "Il-gop-jul-ja-dom".

  • An investigation of fish fauna was conducted based on the specimens from the Taean International Marine Park, off West Coast of Korea in 2005. They were collected by small seine net and stake net. The collected fishes were composed of 27 species belongs to 15 families and 8 orders. The dominant species were gobids of Favonigobius gymmnauchen in the sand area, Chamichthys gulosus and C. dolichognathus in the rocky area. The Korean endemic species were two species of Zoarchias uchidai and Repomucenus koreanus. But Porocottus leptosomus that described as a new species on the basis of specimens collected from this area in 2002 was not collected in this study.

  • It is increasing to make an efforts on preventing natural river environment and preserving natural river ecosystem as development is unavoidable. In the case of inconsistent river flow caused by reservoir development, fishway is an alternative to secure fish diversity and preserve existing river ecosystem but existing fishway was established without full study for their functions. In this study, hydraulic characteristics of natural fishway established on Beakje weir's right side were analyzed. The results show that the fishway has reasonable depth and velocity condition which inhabit condition is enough for a dominant species. For assessing the optimal design of fishway, the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) was calculated by using two dimensional numerical model under the ordinary flow condition. The comparison results for various pool widths in the fishway show that the designed width has maximum WUA for adult Zacco platypus but WUA is maximized with 1m wider pool width than designed width for spawning.

  • This study describes the spatial distribution of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from the fishing ports along Jeju Island. Surface sediment samples from 22 stations revealed the occurrence of 29 species involving the Groups Protoperidinioid (44.8%), Gonyaulacoid (31.0%), Calciodineloid (10.3%), Gymnodinioid (6.9%), Diplosalid (3.5%) and Tuberculodinioid (3.5%). The cyst abundance recorded here is very low ($13{\sim}220cysts\;g-dry^{-1}$) as compared to Korean coastal regions. The abundance of heterothophic cysts increased in several fishing pots with fine sediments and anthropogenic tidal pools. And cyst abundance was well correlated with the grain-size composition of surface sediments. The dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in Jeju fishing ports were characterized by the dominant species, cyst of Gymnodinium sp., cyst of Pyrodinium bahamense and cyst of Scrippsiella trochoidea in 2012, Protoperidinium sp. (Brigantedinium sp.), cyst of Scrippsiella sp./trochoidea and cyst of Gymnodinium sp. in 2014, and Protoperidinium sp. (Echinidinium sp. and Brigantedinium sp.) in 2016. The advent of the toxic dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense were recorded for the first time in Jeju coastal waters. As a results, we are determined should be to monitoring and management measures for new toxic dinoflegallates from tropical or subtropical reigions and anthropogenic tidal pools by industrial activities.

  • The characteristic of fish fauna and distribution by habitat type in the Yanghwa stream were investigated from August, 2008 to June, 2009. During the surveyed period, 30 species belonging 8 families were collected. And there were 10 Korea endemic species(33.3%), including Rhodeus uyekii et and so on. Dominant species was Rhodeus notatus, and subdominant species was Pseudorasbora parva. Dominant species according to habitat type was Pseudorasbora parva in Dam type pool and Channel conected pool, Pseudogobio esocinus(Run), Zacco platypus(Riffle), Rhodeus notatus(Side channel and Substrate type pool), Squalidus gracilis majimae(Meander type pool), and Carassius auratus(Channel unconnected pool), respectively. As a results of community analysis in the Yanghwa Stream, diversity, richness, and abundance indices showed relatively high values, indicating that studied stream have relatively stable community structure. Moreover, cluster and principal component analysis were divided by two groups(lotic and lentic habitats), suggest that species and individuals were different among habitat types.
