Arousal monitoring system using the change of skin impedance (피부 임피던스 변화를 이용한 각성도 측정 시스템)

  • One of principal causes of car accidents is low arousal level of driver. Drivers arrive their destination under an appropriate arousal level. Basic research was done to develop a portable arousal monitor and to evaluate the arousal level of drivers. An arousal monitor which can simulantaneously measure the skin impedance change and EEG was designed and tested. The relationship among three parameters was studied and was used to determine the index of skin impedance level depending on arousal level.

A Study on Evaluating Length Limit in Tangent Section of Highway Based on Driver's Workload (운전자 작업부하를 고려한 최장 허용 직선길이 결정에 관한 연구)

  • Driver's psychophysiological load is one of the key measures for evaluating the safety of the highway. The purpose of this study is to propose and to test the methodology of evaluating the length limit of tangent section using driver's psychophysiological load. Driver's psychophysiological data is represented by the data acquire by frontal and occipital lobe. In order to compare the differences between tangent segments and the orders, real road driving experiments were performed. We collected psychophysiological data during the operation of vehicles. The experimental data were analyzed using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and relative power spectrum tools. These routine produces the beta value which is a major factor in consideration of driver's condition. The results in this study are summarized as follows: (1) A new methodology of evaluating the length limit in tangent section of highway using driver's psychophysiological load was proposed. (2) It was observed that driver's work load at tangent section was three times lower than that at the other section types. The beta value at tangent section is 2.219, while that at general section is 0.821. (3) It was observed that the driver's work load was significantly dropped to 0.428 after the continuous driving of 4.2km tangent section. (4) Based on the experimental subjects(from 27 Years to 31). we suggest that 30 times of design speed(3.0 km) could be acceptable as the length limit of tangent section in highway rather than the Previous limit which is 20 times of design speed(2.0km).

Evaluation of Driver's Psychophysiological Load at Freeway Merging Area (고속도로 합류부에서 운전자의 심리.생리적 작업 부하 연구)

  • This study evaluated the chance of driver's Psychophysiological load of occipital lobe at freeway merging area and compared with basic driving section. Ten persons of 8 men and 2 women were investigated at 3 basic section and 3 merging areas on the Youngdong freeway. It is found that driver's load in acceleration lane before merging is 2.21 times higher than the basic driving section. Further, driver's load for merging was maintained fur 4 seconds after merging. Particularly, driver's highest loading point in merging behavior was found to be 80m from the gore area.

Analyzing drivers' visual response variation in very long expressway tunnel ; the Yuksimnyeong tunnel (장대터널에서의 운전자 시각각성변화 분석연구 (육십령터널을 대상으로))

  • This research analyzed the changes of drivers' visual workload with beta wave of bionic signals from brain's occipital lobe from entrance to exit section of the Yuksimnyeong tunnel which is 3.1km long in Daejeon-Tongyeong section of Jungbu expressway. There are 10 subjects who Participate our experiments and the results are as follows. First. the drivers' visual workload is higher about 41% in entrance section of the tunnel than 200m in advance of the section of the tunnel. Second, it is higher than 200m in advance of the section of the tunnel by 34.5% that the value of the drivers' visual workload who is driving in the tunnel. Third, as a result of analyzing the tunnel into 200m unit section, it is statistically different from other sections' at the 1.0km and 2.4km section from the entrance of the tunnel. If drivers sustain average visual workload for safe driving in very long tunnel, it's not desirable environment that drivers' visual workload goes under the average workload. Therefore, it would be the section where drivers who is driving in tunnel could cause a traffic accident.

  • 본 논문은 주행 중의 졸음방지를 목적으로 하는 각성시스템의 평가에 관한 연구이다. 졸음운전을 방지하는 데에는 각성도의 저하상태를 높은 정확도로 검출하는 기술과 그것을 해소하는 기술이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 졸음운저자를 위해서 졸음각성시스템을 향상시켰다. 개발된 각성시스템의 평가를 위해서 졸음을 유도하는 단조로운 행위를 수행하면서 뇌파, 심전도, 안전도와 같은 생체신호를 측정하였다. 피험자가 졸음상태에 있을 때에 산소, 향, 여러 가지 색 자극을 제시함으로써 각성효과를 평가하였다. 졸음의 해소에 효율적인 일정한 양의 산소와 멘톨 성분이 함유된 향을 동시에 각성자극으로 제시하였을 때와, 노란색의 색 자극을 주었을 때 가장 각성에 효과적임을 확인할 수 있었다.

Sensibility Evaluation of Driver to the Speed in a Dynamic Simulator (동환경 시뮬레이터에서 주행속도에 따른 운전자 감성평가)

  • 본 연구에서는 동적환경 감성 시험평가 시스템(driving simulator)을 이용하여 다양한 운전속도(40, 70, 100km/h)에서 주행시 운전자의 감성평가를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 주행속도가 증가할수록 쾌활성, 쾌적감, 긴장감, 각성감, 속도감이 높게 나타났고, 심박수는 증가하였다. 안정시에 비하여 주행시에 뇌파의 알파파는 감소하고 베타파는 증가하였으며 호흡수가 증가하였으나, 조건간의 유의차는 나타나지 않았다. 또한 70km/h이상에서 GSR의 증가와 SKT의 감소가 인정되었으며, 70km/h이하에서 눈깜박임율이 증가하였다. 이상의 결과로부터, 운전자는 속도가 증가할수록 주관적으로 긍정적인 감성을 느끼지만, 70km/h이상에서 자율신경계 반응에 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 이러한 결과는 실제차량 및 시뮬레이터에서 수행한 선행연구의 결과와 대체로 일치하여 본 시스템으로 운전자 감성평가가 충분히 수행될 수 있음을 시사하였다.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop the algorithm of human arousal inducing interface using steady-state visual evoked potential(SSVEP) and its verification through experiments. In order to develop the model, computer-based SSVEP program simulation is preliminary performed. From the results of the simulation, stimulus pattern is decided to checkerboard and SSVEP frequency range is set into beta wave (13~30Hz). After the experiment on proving the effect of SSVEP flashing stimulation while driving by installing it at the location of people mostly falling asleep in the highway, the result confirms that both during the night and the day, after SSVEP flashing stimulation, a wave Beta immediately increases and the subjects keep high stimulation for the 5 minute maintaining stage.

  • In this paper, a driver's drowsy detection sensor system based on the respiration is investigated. The sensor system consists of a piezoelectric pressure sensor attached at the abdominal region of the seat belt and a personal computer. The piezoelectric pressure sensor was utilized for the measurement of pressure variations induced by the movement of the driver abdomen during breathing. The signal processing software for detecting driver's drowsiness was produced using the Labview. The experiments were performed with 30 years male driver. The amplitude of the respiration at awake state was larger than one at the drowsy state. On the contrary, the respiration rate at awake state was lower than one at the drowsy state. The drowsy detection sensor system developed based on the experimental could successfully detect the driver's drowsy on real-time.

The Effects of Circadian Rhythm in Subjective Alertness on the Occurrence of Traffic Accidents (주관적 각성도의 일주기(日週期) 리듬이 교통사고 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to examine the effects of circadian rhythm in subjective alertness on the occurrence of traffic accidents, the authors investigated the occurrence rate of traffic accidents adjusted to traffic volume in Seoul and the relative rate of fatal accidents versus total traffic accidents in Korea at different times of day in 1991. We analyzed these data in relation with the circadian rhythm in subjective alertness. The results were as follows. Both the occurrence rate of traffic accidents adjusted to traffic volume and the relative rate of fatal accidents versus total traffic accidents were the highest at 3-4 a.m., known as the time period of the lowest subjective alertness. They were negatively correlated with subjective alertness (p<0.05, p<0.001). In conclusion, it is suggested that the circadian rhythm of subjective alertness should have a significant effect on the occurrence of traffic accidents despite many confounding factors such as driving environments.

  • 본 실험은 자동차 시뮬레이터의 속도 변화(40, 70, 100km/h)와 롤러코스터 시뮬레이터의 운동성 구현 방법(washout 필터 적용, washout 필터 비적용) 에 따른 인간 감성을 탑승자의 주관적 평가를 통하여 비교 평가하였다. 자동차 시뮬레이터, 롤러코스터 시뮬레이터 실험은 각각 건강한 20대 남자 12명, 8명을 대상으로 simulator sickness, 쾌적감, 긴장감, 각성감, 속도감에 대한 주관적 평가를 실시하였다. 결과, 자동차 시뮬레이터에서의 저속주행보다 운동형태가 다양한 롤러코스터 시뮬레이터 주행시 쾌적감, 긴장감, 각성감, 속도감이 유의하게 높았다. 즉 자동차 시뮬레이터에서는 주행시 주행속도가 증가함에 따라 운전자의 감성의 정도는 상승하였고 시뮬레이터간 비교에서는 자동차 시뮬레이터의 저속 주행에 비해 롤러코스터 시뮬레이터 주행시 감성변화는 더 컸다. 이상에서 시뮬레이터 구현 방법에서 속도 요소와 다양한 운동성 요소가 탑승자의 감성에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
