Brain Activation During False-Belief Task Performance in Korean Healthy Adults: An fMRI Study (한국 정상 성인의 틀린 믿음 과제 수행 시의 뇌 활성화: fMRI 연구)

  • We applied fMRI to examine brain activation during false-belief task in Korean healthy adults. In the first experiment, brain areas including bilateral precuneus, temoporo-parietal junction, left inferior parietal lobule, posterior cingulate, middle frontal gyrus were found during first -order false-belief task. In the second experiment, the left middle frontal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus and right precuneus, middle frontal gyrus, temoporo-parietal junction were activated during second-order false-belief task. These results are compatible with the suggestions that the ways in which adults understand theory of mind stories are universal.

The Semantic System in Late Korean-English Bilinguals (후기 한국어-영어 이중언어자의 의미체계)

  • The present study was aimed to compare the semantic systems represented by the lexicon between L1 and L2 in late Korean-English bilinguals. The participants performed the word-picture matching task. the task was to decide whether the pictures represent the previously presented words' meaning. The words were the basic level categories. The stimuli were consisted of common object belonged to two different semantic categories (natural and artificial). To control the translation strategies, the SOA were manipulated as 650ms(Exp. 1) and 250ms(Exp. 2). No translation effort was found in the comparison of the two experiments. In both experiment, the RTs were faster in L1 rendition, and it took longer to decide the stimuli in natural categories than with artificial ones in L1. However, this category effect was not observed in L2. The results showed the differences in the organization of semantic representations in the brain through the bilinguals' two languages. While L1 semantic knowledge might be more systematically organized, that of L2 seems to be less well organized, at least by late bilinguals who participated in the present study.

  • This study explores the geographic characteristics of ecotour resources in Oceania based on the concept of ecotourism along with global education and investigates the global educational applications of eco-resources through a field survey of the Australian Cairns region. The field survey areas are the Green Island within the Great Barrier Reef, Barron Gorge National Park, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Cairns, and the Tjabukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. This case study of the Cairns region is applicable to global education in these aspects: The underwater Observatory and Glass bottom boat in Green Island is used in efficient exploration of ocean ecology; Barron Gorge National Park provides an excellent forest tour with a well-made track, detailed directory, and trained park rangers; the old industrial trains are being recycled for tourism uses; the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary provides various language interpretations and experts to help further visitor's understanding of the surrounding eco-resources; The Aboriginal Cultural Park also utilizes a special program that helps people understand their culture.

Electrochemical Destruction of Cyanide Ions and Recovery of Zinc Ions from Electroplating Wastewater (도금폐수 중의 시안착이온의 전기화학적 분해 및 아연 회수에 관한 연구)

  • A study has been made for the electrochemical destruction of cyanide ions and removal of zinc ions from a simulated electroplating wastewater by the use of a platinum platized-titanium anode and a stainless steel cathode. Several experimental parameters, including electrolysis time, cell current, additives, and chloride concentration, have been investigated and used for efficient destruction of cyanide waste and removal of zinc ions from aqueous solutions. It was found that cell current and type of additives gave great effects on the destruction of cyanide ions and removal of zinc ions. The optimized conditions (electrolysis time: 1hr, current: 12A, additive: 0.5 M NaCl) have been defined to destroy cyanide ions and remove zinc ions with high efficiency and low operation cost. The proper reaction mechanism leading to the destruction of cyanide on the anode has also been discussed.

Stimulatory Effects of Extracts of Inner Bark from Tabebuia avellanedae on Exercise Endurance Capacity (Tabebuia avellanedae 추출물의 운동능력 향상 효과)

  • The effects of Tabebuia avellanedae (Taheebo) on exercise endurance capacity were investigated using mice in an adjustable-current water pool. Compared to the control group, a 1.8~2.0 fold increase in swimming time was observed in mice administered hot water extract (TAW) and 80% ethanol extract (TAE) of inner bark from T. avellanedae. Blood lactate level, an important fatigue relevance factor, was significantly lower in the TAW and TAE groups than in the control group. The total phenolic contents of TAW and TAE were $93.3{\pm}1.6$ and $115.7{\pm}1.5mgGAE/g$, respectively. The levels of flavonoids in the extracts were $77.3{\pm}1.3$ and $95.9{\pm}1.7mgCE/g$, respectively. Higher antioxidant activities of TAE were observed in each assay at the same concentration as compared to TAW. Correlation between antioxidant activities of TAE with total polyphenol contents was observed. These results suggest that extracts of Taheebo increase exercise endurance capacity by elevating antioxidative potentials.

Biomass and Net Primary Production of Betula platyphylla and Juglans mandshurica Plantations in Chungju Area (충주지역(忠州地域)의 자작나무와 가래나무 조림지(造林地)의 물질생산(物質生産)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • This study has been carried out to estimate aboveground biomass and net primary production in a 22-year-old Betula platyphylla and 24-year-old juglans mandshurica plantations. Nine sample trees were cut in each plantation. Estimations for aboveground biomass and net primary production were made by the equation model $Wt=aD^b$ where Wt is ovendry weight in kg and D is DBH in cm. Total aboveground biomass was 79.33t/ha in Betula platyphylla plantation and 67.47t/ha in Juglans mandshurica plantation. The proportion of each tree component to total aboveground biomass was high in order of bolewood, branches, bolebark, and leaves in the two plantations. Aboveground total net primary production was estimated at 9,92t/ha in Betula platyphylla plantation and 11.79t/ha in Juglans mandshurica plantation. There was greater net primary production in Juglans mandshurica plantation than in Betula platyphylla plantation because of greater bolewood, bolebark, current twig, and branch net primary productions in Juglans mandshurica plantation than in Betula platyphylla plantation.

  • Numerical simulation is performed for nucleate boiling on a micro-finned surface, which has been widely used to enhance heat transfer, by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in the liquid and vapor phases. The bubble motion is determined by a sharp-interface level-set method, which is modified to include the effect of phase change and to treat the no-slip and contact-angle conditions, as well as the evaporative heat flux from the liquid microlayer on immersed solid surfaces such as micro fins and cavities. The numerical results for bubble formation, growth, and departure on a microstructured surface including fins and cavities show that the bubble behavior during nucleate boiling is significantly influenced by the fin-cavity arrangement and the fin-fin spacing.

  • We investigate the transient temperature response in biological tissue whose surface is exposed to alternately varying sinusoidal oscillation. Based on the Pennes bio-heat equation, we apply numerical analysis using a finite element method to find the effects of the physical properties of the skin layers. Three layers of tissue-epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous-are considered as the solution region. We investigate the effects of different properties of the skin layers on the temperature profile. We also investigate the effects of the perfusion rate for the dermis, which is the most sensitive layer. The results show that the temperature profile of tissue depth has a discontinuous point when different physical properties are used.

Rock Support Design of Bakun Tunnelling Project in Sarawak, Malaysia (바쿤 가배수로 터널의 최적지보설계)

  • Ongoing huge Bakun Hydropower project is including the construction of a 210 m height hydroelectric rockfill dam with an installed capacity of 2,520 MW and a power transmission system connecting to the existing networks between Sarawak and peninsula Malaysia. In order to allow the main dam construction during the dry season, the Ballui river will have to be detoured through 3 concrete lined diversion tunnels with an internal diameter of 12 m and a length of 1,400 m each. The geology of Bakun site belongs to the several thousand meters thick Belaga formation deposited from the late Cteteceous to the early Teriary in the Northwest Borneo geosyncline. The orientation of the bedding plane, strike at N55$^{\circ}$E to N70$^{\circ}$E and dip at 50$^{\circ}$SE to 70$^{\circ}$SE, is developed uniformly in Bakun sedimentary rocks. Rock mechanical characteristics of Bakun site have been classified into 4 rock mass types(RMT) depending on the degree of weathering and the occurrence of rock jointing with RMR. Graywacke(Sandstone) as well as Shale can take place together in the same rock mass type if their rock mass properties are similar. It was summarized the rock support type and support system design of underground diversion tunnels in view of rock mechanics.

A Study on the Design Safety of Type III High-Pressure Hydrogen Storage Vessel (Type III 고압수소저장용기의 설계 안전성 연구)

  • The type III vessel, which is used to store high-pressure hydrogen gas, is made by wrapping the vessel's liner with carbon fiber composite materials for strength performance and lightening. The liner seals the internal gas and the composite resists the internal pressure. The properties of the fiber composite material depends on the angle and thickness of the fiber. Thus, engineers should consider these various design variables. However, it significantly increases the design cost due to the trial and error under designing based on experience or experiments. And, for aluminum liners, fatigue loads due to using and charging could give a huge impact on the performance of the structure. However, fatigue failure does not necessarily occur in the position under the highest load in use. Therefore, for hydrogen storage vessel, fatigue evaluation according to design patterns is essential because stress distribution varies depend on composite layer patterns. This study performed an optimization analysis and evaluated a high-pressure hydrogen storage vessel to minimize these trial and error and improve the reliability of the structure, while simultaneously conducting fatigue assessment of all patterns derived from the optimization analysis process. The results of this study are thought to be useful in the strength improvement and life design of composite reinforced high-pressure storage vessels.
