  • Crack detection technique by ultrasonics in structures and components made of austenitic stainless steel often loses its reliability due to the material characteristics during inservice inspection of nuclear power plants, especially in the area of detection and sizing in centrifugally cast stainless steel pipings. In order to understand and overcome this problem, computer program for tracing the ultrasonic rays within material has been developed to simulate the process of defect detection within weld. The program simulates through transmission and reflection technique in crack detection of austenitic stainless steel as well as ultrasonic beam propagation through multiple media including stainless steel cladding interface.

Effects of Welding Processes on the Low Temperature Impact Toughness of Structural Steel Welded Joints (용접방법에 따른 구조용강 용접 접합부의 저온 충격인성 특성)

  • In this study, the Charpy impact test along with metallurgical observation was conducted to evaluate low temperature impact toughness of structural steel welds with different welding processes to find out the optimal welding process to guarantee the required impact toughness at low temperatures. The welding processes employed are shield metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux cored arc welding(FCAW), which are commonly used welding methods in construction. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. To investigate the impact toughness at low temperatures of the steel welds, specimens were extracted from the weld metal and the heat affected zone. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The low temperature impact performance was evaluated based on the correlation between the absorbed energy and the microstructure. Analysis of the results showed that the optimal welding process to ensure the higher low temperature impact toughness of the HAZ and the weld metal is SMAW process using the welding consumable for steels targeted to low temperature use.

  • This paper presents the result of an investigation on the application of the acoustic emission method to the monitoring of fatigue crack initiation, growth and track location in welded joints. Fatigue test was carried out for a typical fillet welded joint of ship structure. AE parameter such as ring down count was analyzed in time domain and crack locations were examined by source location and cluster option which is one of the functions of AE signal processor The usability of AE mettled was confirmed for the detection of the initiation and location of through crack.

Optimization for Underwater Welding of Marine Steel Plates (선박용 강판의 수중 용접 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • Optimizing investigation of characteristics of underwater welding by a gravity type arc welding process was experimentally carried out by using six types of domestic coated welding electrodes for welding of domestic marine structural steel plates (KR Grade A-1, SWS41A, SWS41B,) in order to develop the underwater welding techniques in practical use. Main results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The absorption speed of the coating of domestic coated lime titania type welding-electrode became constant at about 60 minutes in water and it was about 0.18%/min during initial 8 minutes of absorption time. 2. Thus, the immediate welding electrode could be used in underwater welding for such a short time in comparison with the joint strength of in-atmosphere-and on-water-welding by dry-, wet-or immediate-welding-electrode. 3. By bead appearance and X-ray inspection, ilmenite, limetitania and high titanium oxide types of electrodes were found better for underwater-welding of 10 mm KR Grade A-1 steel plates, while proper welding angle, current and electrode diameter were 6$0^{\circ}C$, above 160A and 4mm respectively under 28cm/min of welding speed. 4. The weld metal tensile strength or proof stress of underwater-welded-joints has a quadratic relationship with the heat input, and the optimal heat input zone is about 13 to 15KJ/cm for 10mm SWS41A steel plates, resulting from consideration upon both joint efficiency of above-100% and recovery of impact strength and strain. Meanwhile, the optimal heat input zone resulting from tension-tension fatigue limit above the base metal's of SWS41A plates is 16 to 19KJ/cm. Reliability of all the empirical equations reveals 95% confidence level. 6. The microstructure of the underwater welds of SES41A welded in such a zone has no weld defects such as hydrogen brittleness with supreme high hardness, since the HAZ-bond boundary area adjacent to both surface and base metal has only Hv400 max with the microstructure of fine martensite, bainite, pearlite and small amount of ferrite.

  • Many crack flaws have been detected at tubing seal weld zone in Steam Generator with Alloy600 material tubes. it is very difficult to discriminate the signal from parent material and that from weld zone because weld zone gives complicated ECT signal due to manufacturing processes. ECT signal analysis in the seal weld zone is very important since the tubes with crack in this area shall be out of service by plugging. The purpose of this paper is to distinguish between Parent material and Weld Zone ECT signal in the seal weld zone through the demonstration test of Steam Generator seal weld mock-up.

  • Detection of creep damages in centrifugally cast HK-40 reformer furnace catalyst tube is a common problem for the safety and scheduled operation of chemical plants.   • Non Destructive Examination for welds is one of the most important processes to ensure the integrity of facilities of Nuclear power plants. An automated ultrasonic testing program is developed for welding inspection. A test block with side EDM notch is inspected with this program. This paper shows that the developed automated ultrasonic testing program is quite effective.

This paper describes about the building of Web-based learning environment that supports efficient educational effectiveness throughout the effective 2-D and 3-D visual interface and the operation of main facilities and the navigation of it. The objective of this environmental building is to provide proper knowledge and technology of a nuclear power plant to those students (examine. and trainee), and help them gain effective experiences throughout such activities.

  • 포항가속기는 선형가속기 및 저장링을 통하여 2.5Gev의 고에너지 전자빔 생성과 저장, 유지 되고 있다. 저장링에서 안정적으로 방사광을 추출하여 각종 실험 및 연구를 위하여 이를 제공하고 있다. 이를 위해서 전자가 매우 안정적이고 높은 집적도를 가진 전자다발 형태로 유지되어야 한다. 전자다발의 집적도가 높을수록 전자간의 상호 간섭으로 보유에너지가 더 빠른 시간에 소진되어 전자빔의 수명이 짧아진다. 3차 하모닉 RF 공동기는 전자다발의 운동방향으로 길게 늘려서 전자밀도를 줄여 전자빔의 운전수명을 개선하기 위한 장치이다. 공동기의 제작은 소재준비, 성형, 가공, 용접, 연마, 열처리 등의 여러 공정을 거쳐 완료된다. 본 보고서에서는 공동기의 제작 공정 중 전자빔을 이용한 시험용접, 본용접, 용접부 검사 및 용접부의 연마와 결과에 대하여 기술하였다.
