  • The welding has a high proportion of the production and drying of ships or offshore plants. Non-destructive testing is carried out to verify the quality of welds in Korea, radiography test (RT) is mainly used. Currently, most shipyards adopt analog-type techniques to print the films through the shoot of welding parts. Therefore, the time required from radiography test to pass or fail judgment is long and complex, and is being manually carried out by qualified inspectors. To improve this problem, this paper covers a platform for scanning and digitalizing RT films occurring in shipyards with high resolution, accumulating them in management servers, and applying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect welding defects. To do this, we describe the process of designing and developing RT film scanning equipment, welding inspection information integrated management platform, fault reading algorithms, visualization software, and testing and verification of each developed element in conjunction.

  • Underwater wet bead-on-plate welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick SS400 steel plate as base metal by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 3.2mm diameter. Two kinds of different flux coated wet arc electrodes (UW-1, UW-2) were individually designed flux materials, three kinds of the electrodes (E4301, E4311, E4313) were terrestrial electrodes and the another one (TN20) was an imported underwater wet welding electrode. As results, the individually designed flux coated underwater electrode, UW-2 and TN20 had a good starting and the excellent arc stability compared with other electrodes. No significant difference of bead appearance could be detected, but the slag detachability of TN20 electrodes was relatively undesirable. By rapid cooling rate, the hardness value and the portion of martensite of HAZ were increased, but it was considerably maintain stable for TN20 and UW-2 electrodes. The individually designed flux coated electrode, UW-2 could be used in practice for underwater bead welds.

  • A beam splice method using inclined end-plates and high-strength tension bolts was developed. The end-plates welded to a bracket and a spliced beam are connected each other by using the tension bolts. In the present study, six exterior beam-to-column moment connections were tested under cyclic loading. Test parameters were the end-plate details and bolt arrangements. All specimens were designed so that moment resistances of the end-plates and bolts were greater than the required moment at the beam splice, in accordance with the design methods of AISC Design Guide 4. Test results showed that in the beam splices with the extended end-plates, the beam moment successfully transferred to the bracket, without any defeats such as excessive prying action of the end plates and brittle failure at the end plate-to-beam flange weld joints. However, the deformation capacities of the overall beam-to-column connections were limited due to the brittle failure of the beam-to-column flange weld joints. From the test results, recommendations for seismic design and detailing of the beam-to-column moment connection with inclined end-plate beam splice were given.

  • The proper stress history measurement should be conducted in order to examine the accurate cause of fatigue cracks or the fatigue safety in the steel bridge. Only one strain gauge is generally installed in the field for the stress history examination because of the field circumstances, economic feasibility, workability, and so on. However, this method may not consider the actual size of the specific structure, the gauge length, and the affect of stress concentration in the welded joint. In addition, it is difficult to apply for the stress analysis. Therefore, this study suggests improvements that are a great number of gauge installations, the gauge location adjustment, and the use of the minimum length gauge. It is drived the correlative equation of strain for the distance between the welding toe and the strain gauge installation, and compare correlative equation with equation of IIW. Also, this study could estimate the remaining life and fatigue damage of bridge in service by selecting the suitable stress category. In conclusion, it is possible to understand the member which is high in the fatigue cracks, and the quantitative relations between the welding toe and the strain gauge installation distances. The proposed approach in this study can make an more accurate fatigue damage and a remaining life prediction so that the improved method should be applied in measuring the strain of bridges from now on.

  • Large-scale tests of welded tubular K-joint sunder balanced in-plane bending braces were carried out to observe the fatigue behavior of the API 2W Gr.60 steel plate produced by POSCO. Toe grinding and weld profiling were used to improve the fatigue life of a tubular K-joint. The effects of the steel grade and chord wall thickness on the fatigue life were also investigated. The present results were compared with the UK DEn design curve.

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for railroad cars and commercial vehicles. Structures made of stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by gas welding, For the fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet joints, it is necessary to obtain design information of the stress distribution at the weldment as well as the fatigue strength of the gas-welded joints. Further, the influence of the geometrical parameters of gas-welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. in this study, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. and, the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged on the basis of the ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_f$ relation for the hot-spot stresses at the gas-welded joints. These results, were used for conducting an accelerated life test(ALT) From the experiment results, an acceleration model was derived and factors were estimated. The objective is to obtain the information required for the analysis of the fatigue lifetime of fillet welded joints and for data analysis by the statistic reliability method to save time and cost and to develop optimum accelerated life prediction plans.

  • There are invisible defects by naked eyes in ceramic material images such as internal stomata, cracks and foreign substances. In this paper we propose a method to detect and extract such defects from ceramic pipe weld zone by applying ART2 learning. In pre-processing, we apply Ends-in Search Stretching to enhance the intensity and then perform fuzzy binarization with triangle type membership function followed by enhanced ART2 that interacts with random input patterns to extract such invisible defects. The experiment verifies that this proposed method is sufficiently effective.

  • Joint paths are induced mathematically for many kinds of joint pattern between master- and sub-pipes. By compensating them with root gap of welds and kerf width, real cutting paths are determined. Their NC codes are generated, and the paths generated by NC code are verified by a ghost function. A beveling is implemented through tilting a torch in the A- and B-axis direction for 8 sections in the chuck rotation of C-axis. The effective CAM program was developed specially for 6-axis CNC pipe coasters which cut a master or sub- pipe along the cutting path and simultaneously fulfill a beveling process.

  • Thick plate is currently widely used in shipbuilding due to the increasing of size of ships. However, its use has increased welding groove angles and volume. The welder's technique must be good enough to improve productivity while preventing defects. Generally, the groove angle can be reduced to less than a flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) machine setting of $35{\pm}5^{\circ}$, requiring fewer welding passes while maintaining high productivity and reduced heat input. Therefore, welding technique can be prevented by improved mechanical properties and welding deformation. Welding defects such as lack of fusion (LF), lack of penetration (LP) and hot cracking should be considered when reducing the groove angle for related applications. In this study, a welding groove angle of $25{\pm}5^{\circ}$ is verified as suitable for FCAW design and fabrication. The experimental results confirm the effects on the strength characteristics of FCAW weldment when reducing groove angle to improve the productivity of shipbuilding industries.

  • This study tackles the development of an improved detail of partially restrained CFT square column-to-beam connection and the evaluation of its mechanical behavior under monotonic loading. The connection is designed to strengthen shearing capacity at the bottom of the connection due to the ultimate behavior of PR-CC by its detail of the bottom connection and simplify the fabrication process. The suggested connection is the welded bottom beam flange connection(M-2) and is compared with the existing PR-CC of bolted seat angle connection(M-1). Two specimens were fabricated in actual size and tested under monotonic loading. Based on the test results, the welded bottom beam flange connection exhibited about 85% of the stiffness of steel beam. It was similar to the bolted seat angle connection and behaved as PR-CC. The specimen of the supposed connection type failed at the shear connection of web but was similar to the bolted seat angle connection until the failure. It obtained sufficient stiffness and capacity through the reinforcingsteel and the capacity and deformational ability equivalent to the full-plastic moment through the anchor inside the steel tube at the web connection. So, it can be said that the suggested connection exhibits sufficient ductile behavior.
