Micro engine that includes Micro scale combustor is fabricated. Design target was focused on the observation of combustion driven actuation in MEMS scale. Combustor design parameters are somewhat less than the size recommended by feasibility test. The engine structure is fabricated by isotropic etching of the photosensitive glass wafers. Electrode is formed by electroplating of the Nickel. Photosensitive glass can be etched isotropically with almost vertical angle. Bonding and assembly of structured photosensitive glass wafer from the engine. Combustor size was determined to be 1mn scale. Piston in cylinder moves by fuel injection and reaction. In firing test, adequate engine operation including ignition, flame propagation and piston motion was observed. Present study warrants further application research on MEMS scale internal combustion power units.
A multi-stage turbocharger system has been constructed for HALE UAV internal combustion engine. To boost rarefied intake air up to sea level condition, the turbocharger system should consist of 3 stages including heat exchanger located after compressor outlet to drop compressed air temperature. One dimensional system analysis has been conducted by matching required power between compressor and turbine and adequate turbochargers have been searched for from commercially available models targeting for automobiles. By applying commercial automobile turbochargers to the multi-stage turbocharger system, it is expected that considerable amount of research resources will be saved.
The importance of engine vibration reduction is increasing as the vehicle interior noise becomes more serious due to higher output and lighten weight trends. Recently, the balance shaft attachment has been proposed as a representative method for the engine vibration reduction. The balance shaft is a device that cancels the vibrations generated in the reciprocating motion of the piston and the conrod by using an arbitrary eccentric mass, and can improve fuel efficiency and ride comfort at the same time. This paper proposes the unbalance amount and shape of the balance shaft to induce and offset the inertia force generated by the engine structure. The proposed two-shaped balance shaft was implemented as an ADAMS multi-body dynamics model, and the reduction of the inertial force in the actual behavior was confirmed through dynamic simulation.

A numerical simulation of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow was performed for a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly. The governing equations based on a nonorthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components were used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The modified $\kappa-\xi$. turbulence model which included the effect of compressibility was used. The results of twodimensional transient calculation for the axisymmetric configuration were compared with the experimental data. Although slightly low rms velocity was predicted compared to the experimental data, predicted velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region showed good agreements with the experimental data. The flow at the valve exit was separated at the same valve lift position with the experimental data. Two vortices incylinder region were generated during the initial intake process. The clockwise main vortex became strong and moved upward to the top wall. The counter-clockwise second vortex became weak and stick to the upper left corner of the cylinder. After middle intake process, new vortex adjacent to upper cylinder wall appeared by the piston motion and therefore, the in-cylinder flow was formed into three vortices. The cylinder pressure just before bottom dead center of piston was higher than inlet pressure and then the reverse flow occured at the valve exit. The in-cylinder flow characteristics were strongly dependent on piston motion, but insensitive to valve motion.

Using hydrogen fuel is expected to be suitable as a reciprocating internal combustion engine with heightened interest in HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Hydrogen is hightest energy density per mass so it can continue to charge for long periods of time and have positive part of the environmental effects. However, it is estimated that there is less research on hydrogen fuel engine currently applied, and many studies need to be done. Depending on the operation, there are factors that result in supercooling due to reduced radiation or reduce cooling performance due to low air density. Therefore, the experiment was to change the temperature of the cooling water and investigate the effect on engine combustions. The limitation of the stable operation range due to backfire is dominated by the excess air ratio rather than the effect of the cooling water temperature change. When the cooling water temperature increases, the volumetric efficiency decreases and the torque decreases. As the cooling water temperature decreases, the heat loss was increased and consequently the thermal efficiency was decreased.
Natural gas fuel has known to be very promising in terms of abundancy and economic value. Therefore it is widely treated as research topics in a variety field of production, storage and utilization. Natural gas has become one of the major sources for the power generation by using internal combustion engines(ICE). Development of natural gas fuel injection device should be preceded to realize a reliable natural gas fuel supply system for a MW class power generation reciprocating ICE. In this research, an injection valve which consists of solenoid and body part with a moving plate was designed and its dynamic performance was experimented in the engine-like environment. As a result of the experiments, linearity of flow rate was obtained and overall around 2ms of response time was observed at the pressure difference of 1bar. In addition, more than 100Liter/min(@2Hz) of gas flow rate was witnessed, which is expected to be adequate for the fuel supply system of a MW class natural gas engine.

Previously study on structural design of the main wing of the twenty-seat class WIG (Wing in Ground Effect) craft. In the final design, three spars construction was selected for safety in the critical flight load, and the Carbon-Epoxy material was selected for lightness and structural stability. In this study, the forced vibration analysis was performed on the composite main wing structure of the twenty-seat class WIG craft with two-stroke pusher type reciprocating engine. The vibration analysis based on the finite element method was performed using a commercial FEM code, MSC/NASTRAN. Excitations for the frequency response analysis were assumed as the Y-mode (lateral mode), the Z-mode (vertical mode) and the $M_{xyz}$-mode (twisted mode) which are typical main vibration modes of engine. And excitations for the transient response analysis were assumed as the X-mode (longitudinal mode) with the oscillating propeller thrust which occurs in operation.
The vehicle lubricant occupies upto 35% in a total lubricant market and engine oil occupies upto 77% in the vehicle lubricant market in Korea. A suitable quality management of the circulating engine oil is necessary for driver and engine protection. But, KS and synthetic engine oil products (involved over 30% synthetic oil) are exempt to any quality management under Petroleum and Alternative Fuel Business Act. It is also known that synthetic oils such as PAO (poly alpha olefin) have excellent properties and performance like anti-wear, varnish control and oxidation stability than those of mineral oils. For this reason, PAO has been used for an engine oil, rotary screw and reciprocating compressor in addition to heavy duty and other extreme service applications. In this study, our research group analyzed the chromatogram pattern for the mineral oil, PAO and mineral oil involved a typical ratio of PAO using SIMDIST (simulated distillation). In the SIMDIST chromatogram, the mineral oil showed a broad peak, while PAO showed a sharp typical peak. Also the oil with a large viscosity grade exhibited a long retention time due to the heavy molecular weight and high boiling point. In particular, the blended mineral oil with 20% PAO sample showed a distinctly different pattern compared to that of using the conventional mineral oil. For monitoring PAO contents in distributing engine oils, we analyzed the SIMDIST for 27 kinds of engine oils which were popularly sold in Korea. The analytic results indicate that all kinds of engine oils showed that PAO contents were below 20% in engine oil products. Moreover, the PAO titled product was found to have a small amount of PAO. Thus, we conclude that the related laws for the proper quality management of synthetic oils are needed to be established.

Turbulent flows in an axisymmetric reciprocating engine are numerically simulated at it's suction and compression stage. Amounts of heat transfer through the wall of the cylinder are also estimated. k-.epsilon. turbulence model is adopted and the law of the wall is applied at grid-points near the wall. More than 40 * 40 grids are reguried to reasonably predict flows and the 3-level finite difference scheme for the time derivative term appears to be effective rather than the 2-level scheme. Calculated mean velocity distributions shows good agreements with an available experimental data. The program reasonably simulates flow patterns and pressures throughout the suction and the compression stages of the reciprocating engine. Predicted intensities of turbulence are still deviated from measured data. Further researches for turbulence modeling are expected.
