  • We investigated the cell growth rate according to the change of temperature of the Thermo-rod used for the local hyperthermia therapy. For this study, we fabricated the Thermo-rods (TR) using Duplex Stainless Steels having magnetic properties as well as non magnetic properties. To evaluate cell growth rates up to 15 days, we conducted cell proliferation test using cell counting methods. For the tests, the CAPEs and Osteoblats were seeded on the 6-we11 plates with the induction heated thermo-rods 30 mins a day for 15 days with 2 days interval and without induction heated thermo-rods as control group respectively. We calculated cell growth rates, 6 hours after heating. From the results, in case of CAPEs and Osteobalsts seeded groups, the cell growth rates in all groups increased drastically for 6 days after seeding, but decreased irregularly after 6 days. In conclusion, the cell growth rates showed no significant difference among all groups and it indicated that there were no effects of temperate ($41^{\circ}C$) on cell growth rates.

  • Recently, the hyperthermia treatment of malignant tissues has gained great attention as a biocompatible and benign method that facilitates successful cancer therapy compared to radiation and chemotherapy. In this study, superparamagnetic ($Fe_3O_4$) iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) coated with biocompatible polymer (IONP@P(MPC/FOM)) for the purpose of hyperthermia treatment were prepared and related characterization were performed. IONPs with having 15 nm diameter were first prepared by coprecipitation and followed by surface modification with 4-cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate (CTP) for reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization by using 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and fluorescein O-methacrylate (FOM) to form corona layer of P(MPC/FOM) on the surface of the IONP. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed the morphology and hydrodynamic size of the IONP@P(MPC/FOM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the formation of P(MPC/FOM) corona layer, respectively. Exposing IONP dispersion to alternating magnetic field suggests that the IONP@P(MPC/FOM) aqueous dispersion with 0.2 wt.% can be used for hyperthermia treatment.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to establish theoretical bases upon which to complement the clinical evidence in representative literature (Hwangjenaegyeong;黃帝內經)of Korean medicine. Methods : We searched applicable paragraphs about thermotherapy and cryotherapy in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and defined them as historical and theoretical bases of thermotherapy and cryotherapy in korean medicine. Results : The meridian muscle treatment originated from Young-Chu(靈樞) was developed for many centuries. Five paragraphs about thermotherapy and one paragraph about cryotherapy are in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經). These records to treat the disease of the muscle meridian are enough to explain historical and theoretical evidences. Conclusions : Thermotherapy and cryotherapy of meridian muscle are treatments which are used widely in Korean medicine. They mean that thermotherapy and cryotherapy has been explained under the system of Korean medicine. It is necessary for more literatural study and clinical trials to be carried out to secure the evidence of physical therapies in Korean medicine.

  • This study investigates the effects of wear training on blood pressure and blood lipid profiles. For the purpose of this research, 'wear training' refers to the alternating stimulation of temperature while using specific clothing under controlled situations ($18.8{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$, $38{\pm}3%RH$). The participants alternated between two different garments producing a $1.5^{\circ}C$ difference in the innerest microclimate temperature over a period of 4 weeks. The experiments in this study were conducted in a comfortable environment after sufficient rest. The results were as follows. The systolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure were lower in the post test than in the pre test (p<.05). The atherogenic index (AI) was also reduced and the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio increased (p<.05) in the post test. These results demonstrated that wear training positively affected improvement in vascular stiffness.

  • Objectives: This paper aims to report the effects of Korean medical treatment on a patient who underwent abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Methods: An ovarian cancer patient underwent abdominal surgery and got Korean medical treatment during 7-day hospitalization. About 2 years later, with metastasis to the lymph nodes detected, she had abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and got Korean medical treatment during 10-day hospitalization. The treatment included herbal medicine and acupuncture. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of symptoms was measured every morning. Results: After the treatment, sequela following surgery decreased, and general conditions improved. During 1st and 2nd hospitalization, NRS of general weakness, heartburn and dorsal chill significantly decreased (10 to 5, 10 to 5 and 10 to 2, respectively) while edema in both legs remained the same. Conclusions: This case shows that Korean medical treatment is effective for a patient who underwent abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of heat therapy, stretching exercise and to verify which method was most effective for lumbar flexibility improvement. Subjects were 20 apparantly healthy person(male10, female10) who did not have any medical problem. They were randomly divided and assigned into 2 groups: heat therapy, stretching exercise. For testing flexibility, trunk flexion, bunk extension, and Schober-test were performed. Pre-test was done prior to the each group's treatment. Test was done at 2nd week, 4th week and 6th week. There were no significant difference in improvement of trunk flexion and trunk extension after 6 weeks treatment among 2 methods. However in all 2 groups, there were statically significant improvement in flexibility as time go on. The rate of improvement was highest at 2nd week, while this was attenuated afterwards. The Schober-test score changed significantly from pre-test to the mid-test and to the post-test, while there were no significant difference among 2 methods of treatment. With the results above, it was concluded that heat therapy, stretching-exercise were all effective for improving flexibility without any significant priorities.

  • Radiological and clinical evidences indicate that hyperthermia combined with irradiation produce a significant improvement in therapeutic effect of cancer The experiences obtained from 90 rats' kidney A single dose of irradiation ranged from 6Gy, 8Gy and 10Gy was delivered on the rat's kidney. The combined therapy group had the same irradiation after hyperthermia at $42\~44^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Microscopic examination and calculation of thermal enhancement ratio were carried out, and the results were as follows: 1. In the group of hyperthermia alone, there were moderate glomerular congestion and mild tubular degeneration on light microscopic examination. 2. In the group of irradiation alone, tubular degeneration was noted in 6Gy irradiation and its severity was increased along with radiation dose. 3. In the group of hyperthermia combined with irradiation, tubular degeneration and necrosis were appeared in 6Gy and 10Gy irradiation, respectively. 4. On electron microscopic examination, proximal convoluted tubular and glomerular changes in irradiation group were similar to that of combined with hyperthermia, and its severity was increased along with observation periods. 5. Thermal enhancement ratio (TER) was 1.0 after evaluation of histipathologic changes in rat's kidney, with combination therapy.

  • Between August 1988 and December 1991, 24 patients with intracranial tumors were treated with stereotactic radiosurgery(RS) using a 10 MV linear accelerator at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine. There were 5 meningiomas, 3 craniopharyngiomas, 9 glial tumors, 2 solitary metastases, 2 acoustic neurinomas, 2 pineal tumors, and 1 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Ten patients were treated as primary treatment after diagnosis with stereotactic biopsy or neuroimaging study. Nine patients underwent RS for post-op. residual tumors and three patients as a salvage treatment for recurrence after external irradiation. Two patients received RS as a boost followed by fractionated conventional radiotherapy. Among sixteen patients who were followed more than 6 months with neuroimage, seven patients (2 meningiomas, 4 benign glial tumors, one non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) showed complete response on neuroimage after RS and nine patients showed decreased tumor size. There was no acute treatment related side reaction. Late complications include three patients with symptomatic peritumoral brain edema and one craniopharyngioma with optic chiasmal injury. Through this early experience, we conclude that stereotactically directed single high doses of irradiation to the small intracranial tumors is effective for tumor control. However, in order to define the role of radiosurgery in the management of intracraniai tumors, we should get the long-term results available to demonstrate the benefits versus potential complications of this therapeutic modality.
