  • This study examines how online community activity influences social capital and the moderating effect of personal characteristic between them. Hierarchical regression and two-way ANOVA analysis were conducted with 9,479 samples. The results show that online community activity positively associated with off-line social capital, and it is observed that the effect in older people is stronger than younger people. This study extends previous perspective on the online community activity toward social capital and empirically proves that the activity have also an impact on off-line social capital. The moderating effect of age implies that activation plans of community for older people are required in order to increase social capital.

  • The purpose of this research is to examine the relationships between online and offline social capital and psychological well-being of university students. Data came from 236 university students who attended 4-year universities in Seoul and had used Social Network Service. The results of this study indicated that only offline social capital was statistically significant to predict psychological well-being including depression and happiness when both online and offline social capital variables were entered. In detail, the university students' depression was associated with their gender, satisfaction with their economic status, and offline bridging social capital. In addition the students' happiness was associated with their satisfaction with their economic status, offline bridging, and bonding social capital. These results indicate that offline social capital is more important for improving psychological well-being of university students compared to online social capital. Policy implications for improving psychological well-being of university students are discussed.

  • This research analyzed how smart devices and Social Network Service (SNS) change the construction of social capital. The results show that smart devices provide the foundation of expending 'bridging social capital' by offering various communication tools. SNS reinforces 'bonding social capital' and extends 'bridging social capital' by expanding social relationships from off-line to online and supporting the construction of online communities. In contrast, the use of SNS through smart devices is not related to the generation of social capital. However, it builds a multi-aspect social capital by making people participate in various social activities.

  • An online community serves as a communication hub among members who desire to share their opinions and emotions. Thus, it is often utilized as a corporate or brand marketing tool. While focusing on commercial online communities from the marketing perspective, however, researchers have barely discussed non-commercial online communities despite its popularity. This study examined the influence of flow on satisfaction in the context of the non-commercial online community as well as the role of social capital as a significant mediator between flow and satisfaction. The result also included the differences between employed mothers and non-employed mothers. This study has expanded the research scope of online communities and offered theoretical and practical implications based on the interdisciplinary discussion that involves one of the understudied populations, mothers.

  • This research categorizes the factors of digital capital accumulated both in personal and social level into digital access and digital competence, and empirically analyzes how the use of public libraries effects on the formation of digital capital. As a result, it was found that participation in public library programs, the use of information services, and the utilization of digital collections had positive effect on the formation and accumulation of digital capital at the personal and social level. In contrast, it was analyzed that the use of digital collections in public libraries did not significantly affect the creation of digital contents or reciprocal collaboration based on online networks. Therefore, in order for public libraries to fully support the formation of digital capital, they should not only provide knowledge and information which is a traditional role of public libraries, but also play a role as a digital-based cooperative system.

  • This study explores the causes of online helping behavior. This study tests the effects of various explanatory factors on the basis of previous studies on helping behavior. These factors include social demographic, situational, motivational, and social capital factors. According to the survey of 475 university students living in Seoul in 2010, age and religion have significant effects on online helping behavior. In addition, the perceived helping opportunity, time and effort cost to help, and social capital factor have significant effects on online helping behavior. Results reveal that the effect of social capital factor is the largest among other variables. However, it is shown that the effects of benefit from helping, empathy, and personal norm are not statistically significant. It is also revealed that the effect of social capital factor is important across all types of online helping behavior except information helping. The policy implications are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to elaborate the underlying mechanism by which information competency of those with disabilities influences their level of life satisfaction through a mediator, social capital built up through online and offline activities. To this end, the research conducts mediation analysis, comprised of three sets of regression by using the data of the "2018 Report on the Digital Divide." The results demonstrate that the information competency of those with disabilities has a significant effect on their level of life satisfaction; the higher the information competency, the greater the social capital. In addition, social capital partially mediates the relationship between information competency and life satisfaction. The policy implications from this study indicate that the efforts to improve information competency of those with disabilities should be made in a way that facilitates social interactions and community participation.

  • Because of the recent development of information technology, especially the popularization of social media, false rumors and abusive comments on social media have increased, which has accelerated conflicts in online society. Since these conflicts lead to significant negative influences on online society, it is important to figure out how to cope with the conflicts and integrate the society. Thus, this study provides effective political implications that will advance the society where people can communicate based on trust in social media. In addition, we suggest new sociocultural change phenomenon and social integration by drawing the Causal Loop Diagram focusing on the dimension of social capital in social media environment.
