  • By using liquid film thickness measurement the spray characteristics of swirl injector according to the geometric parameters were investigated in this paper. A specially designed injector having a variable backhole length, swirl chamber length, orifice length was used to measure the liquid film thickness. The spray characteristics of the injector were represented by mass flow rate according to the injection pressure, liquid film thickness in the lower orifice, spray cone angle.

  • This study is an investigation on macroscopic spray behavior of nonimpinging-type injector equipped on the hydrazine thruster under development. An electron microscope is employed for the acceptance examination of injector orifice. Initial performance characteristics and spray behavior of injector are observed through the instantaneous spray images which are captured by high speed camera and Schlieren method with varying injection pressures. The injector performance is scrutinized by the velocity along with penetration length of spray and categorized by dimensionless parameters. It is confirmed that there exist varying characteristics related to the spray breakup caused by fabrication errors of injector-orifices. Unexpected spray behavior, which needs to be reexamined, is grasped at specific pressure level, as well.

  • A water-flow test for acceptance verification is carried out for a nonimpinging-type injector prior to the design-performance verification of hydrazine thruster under development. The injector used in the experiment is to be equipped on the hydrazine thruster producing 70 N of nominal thrust at an inlet pressure of 24.6 $kg_f/cm^2$. It is observed that there exist varying characteristics of atomization among the injector-nozzle orifices caused by a fabrication error which can be judged from a microscopic standpoint. On the other hand, all of the injector orifices are placed within the design criteria in an injection-angle performance.

  • A coaxial swirl/shear injector using GCH4/LOx as propellants was degisned and manufactured. Flow analysis by Fluent was performed to decide the number of orifice and the rear shapes of inlet orifice etc. Flow rate of the injector was measured according to differential pressure and uniformity of injector's spray pattern was confirmed by a patternator. The results showed that the difference of flow rate was around 10% and the spray angle of oxidizer was $66^{\circ}$.

  • An experimental study was conducted to study fuel injection characteristics through plain orifice injectors when the fuel was heated to the temperature higher than its boiling point. Three injectors with different orifice diameters were used to measure the flow coefficient (${\alpha}$) for the injection pressure ranges of 3, 5, and 10 bar and the fuel temperature ranges between 50 and $270^{\circ}C$. The study showed that ${\alpha}$ decreases gradually with the fuel temperature below $180^{\circ}C$ while it drops abruptly when the temperature goes beyond $187^{\circ}C$, the boiling temperature of the fuel. The slope of ${\alpha}$ bifurcated at the boiling temperature for different injection pressures, and ${\alpha}$ decreased faster for the lower injection pressure due to the more active boiling in the injector. In addition, the larger orifice diameter had the higher ${\alpha}$ value, and ${\alpha}$ jumped at moderate temperature ranges when the injection pressure was low, implying the turbulent-laminar transition phenomena. The measured ${\alpha}$ was plotted against the cavitation number($K_c$), and the characteristics were independent of the applied pressure for small injectors when the fuel was evaporated before it was injected.

  • Pseudo-3D spatial distribution of spray droplets is investigated by using Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA) in order to examine the disintegration and spreading behavior of spray exiting from liquid-propellant thruster injector. Spray injected from nozzle orifice with length-to-diameter ratio ($L/d_o$) of 1.67 and under the injection pressure of 27.6 bar is aligned to the vertical. Vertical and horizontal mean velocities of droplets, Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), and volumetric flux decrease as droplets travel from center/upstream toward outer region/downstream of spray. Although the distribution of spray characteristic parameters is symmetric against the geometric axis of nozzle orifice, their absolute values are asymmetric.
