  • The response spectrum was studied using the observed pound motion from the Odaesan Earthquake (2007/01/20), and then the results were compared to the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60) applied to the domestic nuclear power plants. For the response spectrum analysis, 21 horizontal and 8 vertical observed Pound motions were used for normalization and statistical analysis. The results showed that the MPOSD (Mean Plus One Sigma Standard Deviation) response spectra above 10 Hz revealed higher values than the design response spectra and those below 10 Hz revealed much lower values fur both horizontal and vertical response spectra. These results suggest that the response spectra (Reg. Guide 1.60), used as seismic design code for nuclear facilities in Korea, especially above about 10 Hz, should be reexamined fur apllication to the nuclear power plants structures operated in the Korean Peninsula.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a database for the reduction of road-kills in the Odaesan National Park. To accomplish this task, investigations were conducted on the road-kills that occurred in the period from 2003 to 2007. The results of investigations are as follows: 427 road-kill cases were reported during the period, and the road-kill victims turned out to be mostly small mammals. Among mammals and reptiles the road-kill occurrence rate of squirrels and garters was higher than that of other species, and in the case of birds, the road-kill occurrence rate of yellow-throated bunting was the highest. The road-kill accidents of mammals and reptiles took place more frequently during the summer and autumn, while those of birds during the spring and summer. The increase of road-kill occurrence rate was found to be related to the activity and breeding period of wild animals, as well as to the increase of vehicles. The occurrence rate of road-kills was also found to be influenced by the type of land use on the roadside. Furthermore, the occurrence rate increased significantly when the roads passed through dry fields.

  • To reveal conservation value of Sowhangbyungsan-neup among wetlands in Mt. Odae designated as a Ramsar convention site in 2008, ecological characteristics were investigated. The maximum depth of sediment was 86cm and average at central part was 56cm. Average pH of water was 5.8 and this indicates that this wetland has the characteristics between bog and fen. Average electron conductivity was $11{\mu}S$/cm, which is the lowest among Korean wetlands. Nutrient status was oligotrophic based on contents of cation, nitrate, ammonia, soluble reactive phosphorus in water. Out-flow of water was related with the 3 day cumulative precipitation. Soil texture was loam and nutrient level was very low. Vascular plants of 45 family, 95 genus, 121 species, 2 subspecies, 16 variety, 4 forma, total 121 taxa were recorded. Main plant communities on Sphagnum base were Osmunda cinnamomea community, Carex dispalata community and Carex curta community. The results indicated that this wetland has very different ecological characteristics than others in Korea and deserves conservation value well. Also, this study revealed that there is no evident threatening factor and this wetland will have characteristics of fen continuously in near future.

  • Ground shaking recorded during the January 20, 2007, $M_L$ 4.8 Odaesan earthquake (Korea) were used to investigate the role of the crustal structure in producing a strong ground motion, which includes the identification of the phases responsible for the strong ground motion and their implications for seismic hazard assessment. Analyses of strong-motion data together with waveform simulation revealed that critical and post-critical reflections from the crust-mantle boundary are responsible for the abnormal ground motions. This result demonstrates that the crustal structure should be taken into consideration in studies of seismic hazard mitigation even in the areas of relatively low seismicity.
