  • It is critical to assess the characteristics of flame response to pressure perturbations for the understanding of nonlinear combustion instabilities. Previous studies can be grouped into flame response upon perturbed, fresh air and fuel mixture, and flame response directly perturbed from longitudinal waves. The present study presents experimental methodology for the understanding of the flame response exposed to transverse acoustic waves generated by loud speakers.

A Chemical Reactor Modeling for Prediction of NO Formation of Methane-Air Lean Premixed Combustion in Jet Stirred Reactor (제트 혼합 반응기 내 희박 예혼합 메탄-공기 연소의 NO 생성 예측을 위한 화학 반응기 모델링)

  • A chemical reactor model (CRM) was developed for a jet stirred reactor (JSR) to predict the emission of exhaust such as NOx. In this study, a two-PSR model was chosen as the chemical reactor model for the JSR. The predictions of NO formation in lean premixed methane-air combustion in the JSR were carried out by using CHEMKIN and GRI 3.0 methane-air combustion mechanism which include the four NO formation mechanisms. The calculated results were compared with Rutar's experimental data for the validation of the model. The effects of important parameters on NO formation and the contributions of the four NO pathways were investigated. In the flame region, the major pathway is the prompt mechanism, and in the post flame region, the major pathway is the Zelodovich mechanism. Under the lean premixed condition, the N2O mechanism is the important pathway in both flame and postflame regions.

Experimental Study on the Effect of Flame Surface Area Fluctuation on the Heat Release Fluctuation in a Premixed Bunsen Flame (예혼합 분젠 화염에서의 화염 표면적 변동이 열발생 변동에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A combustion chamber with a branch tube was built to investigate the characteristics of a spontaneous oscillating laminar premixed Bunsen flame. The flame behavior was observed, and the relation between the flame surface area and heat release rate was inspected. The equivalence ratio and mean velocity were fixed at 1.1 and 1.75 m/s, respectively. The amplitude of the pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber was changed and the flame behavior was affected when the length ratio between the branch tube and combustion chamber (L:R) was varied. The $OH^*$, $CH^*$, and flame chemiluminescence had similar behavior qualitatively. There was linearity between the flame surface area and heat release rate.

A Fundamental Study of Hybrid Combustion System Applying Exhaust Gas Recirculation (배기가스 재순환을 적용한 하이브리드 연소시스템에 대한 기초 연구)

  • In this study confirmed the reduction effect of pollutant by applying Fi-EGR and FPI-EGR to hybrid combustion system realizing premixed flame and non-premxied flame at once. The results showed that NOx emission index decreased significantly in case of adopting EGR. Additionally, the hybrid combustion system with EGR resulted in a better performance compared to usual non-premixed combustion system such that it can reduce $NO_x$ emission at equivalent EGR ratios. Especially, in the case of 25% of FI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 50 : 50, NOx emission index reduction rate was about 59% compared to $NO_x$ emission of non-premixed combustion system without EGR and in the case of 15% of FPI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 70 : 30, $NO_x$ emission index reduction rate was about 48% compared to $NO_x$ emission of hybrid combustion system without EGR.

  • Lean premixed gas turbine combustors were successful in meeting current NOx emission regulations. However, these combustors have been found to be susceptible to combustion instability. In this study, general mechanisms for combustion dynamics and instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustors are introduced. In addition, the flame transfer functions in the combustor are experimentally determined. The inputs to the flame transfer function are the imposed velocity fluctuations of the mixture. The key results of the measurements are reviewed.

Short Reaction Mechanism for Premixed CH4-Air Flames at High Pressure (고압에서 예혼합 CH4-Air 화염의 축소 반응 메카니즘)

  • A short reaction mechanism for premixed $CH_4$-air flames at high pressure was developed using a reduction method based on the combined application of the simulation error minimization connectivity method and the iterative species-removal sensitivity method. It consisted of 43 species and 554 elementary reactions under the condition that it produces less than 5% of the maximum error. The flame structures obtained using a detailed reaction mechanism and the short reaction mechanism were compared for $CH_4$-air flames with various initial temperatures and equivalence ratios at high pressure, and the results were in good agreement. Therefore, the short reaction mechanism developed could reproduce the flame speeds, temperatures, and concentrations of major and minor species at high pressure.

  • A qualitative and quantitative analysis on flame dynamics is required to model combustion instability characteristics in gas turbine lean premixed combustors. The current paper shows the flame transfer function modeling results using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques for the flame dynamics study. It is generally known that flame shapes determine the basic characteristics of the flame transfer function. The comparisons of the modeled flame shapes with the measured ones were made using the optimized heat transfer conditions. Modeling results of the flame transfer function show the close behaviors to the measured data with a reasonable accuracy if the flame geometry can be exactly captured.

  • 현대우주항공(주)가 미국의 AlliedSignal사와 함께 국제 공동 개발중인 10MW급의 ASE120 엔진은 항공용 엔진을 산업용으로 개조한 개조형 엔진으로서 희박 예혼합 예기화(Lean Premix prevaporization) 방식의 연소기를 쓰고 있다. 이 연소기는 연소에 관여하는 공기량을 부하에 따라 가감하여 일정 공연비를 유지하는 air staging법을 사용하고 있으며 이로써 연소화염온도를 일정치로 조절하여 연소중 생성되는 유해가스의 양을 목표치 이하로 제어한다. 연소화염온도 설계치는 2912$^{\circ}$F이며 배기가스 발생량은 NOx, CO모두 궁극적으로 10ppmv 이하를 목표로 하고 있다. 이러한 건식 저 배기가스(Dry Low Emission) 연소기가 그 역할을 다하기 위하여는 양호한 혼합기를 확보하는 것이 선결 문제이다. 본 연구소에서는 두 개의 혼합기(mixing can)가 180$^{\circ}$ 간격으로 환형 연소기(annular type)에 접선 방향으로 설치되어 대칭을 이루고 있고 혼합기의 혼합성능을 측정하기 위하여 제작된 시험장치에는 하나의 혼합기만을 쓰고 있다.
