  • In this study, pre-service chemistry teachers' questions in their teaching practices were analyzed considering the context of discourse. Five pre-service teachers participated in the study. Their questions were analyzed by considering various data including class videos, interviews, and teaching-learning materials. Their questions were classified into relevant question, affective question, dead-end question, rhetorical question, and structuring question. Each question was also classified into appropriate question and convenient question by the aspect of proper responses of students. The analyses of the results indicate the differences in the frequencies of several types of questions depending on the content of the lessons. After using convenient questions, pre-service teachers proceeded to prepared classes as they rather than prompted students' responses. The affective questions were rarely used. The dead-end questions were found to be used for promoting interaction with students. The rhetorical questions were used for various purposes such as arousing students' attention or promoting their thinking. Practical implications were discussed based on the results.

  • This study analyzed the thinking types of pre-service chemical cell chemistry teachers according to grade and tried to find out how the education for pre-service teachers had influenced their thinking types. This study found that the pre-service education had failed to form scientific conceptions. Some pre-service teachers thought that college education couldn't help them understand the knowledge about chemical cell. In addition, they are lacking in scientific conception. Even some of them who thought college education was helpful had wrong conceptions. Most of the pre-service teachers' thoughts could not exceed the level of the high school chemistry textbooks. But, Juniors had more scientific conception than other grades through the group discussions about chemistry textbooks' contents in the course of "Theory of Science Teaching Materials". So, Pre-service education should include the pedagogical knowledge with content knowledge treated in secondary school science textbooks for educational effects.

  • The purpose of this study were to analyze characteristics of pre-service chemistry teachers' practice teaching and to investigate the relationship between their practice teaching characteristics and the view of learning. Three pre-service chemistry teachers were selected for this study. Their 9 practice teaching videos that recorded during practice teaching were observed, transcribed, and analyzed. Responses of questionnaires about their view of learning and interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Almost all of the characteristics of pre-service teachers' practice teaching seemed to be reflected in their view of learning. Pre-service teacher K had a lot of constructive view of learning, so comparatively many features of constructivism was presented in practice teaching. Pre-service teacher M had a lot of traditional view of learning, so many traditional features appeared in practice teaching. However, sometimes pre-service teachers' view of learning did not appear to their practice teaching because of several factors. In particular, a few cases that constructive view of learning was not reflected in the practice teaching appeared, especially pre-service teacher H. Factors were the practice school's conditions and the effects of tutors.

  • In this study, a practice-based teacher education program was developed and applied to improve the TPACK of pre-service chemistry teachers. Also the program effect and obstacles were confirmed by measuring the development of TPACK. The participants of this study were 20 pre-service chemistry teachers of 3rd grade and 2 pre-service chemistry teachers of 4th grade who took chemistry education courses at K University located in Chungcheongbuk Province. The developed teacher education program consisted of four stages: preparation, rehearsal, practice, and reflection. The feedbacks from researchers and colleagues pre-service teachers were provided in preparation, rehearsal, and reflection stages. As a result of the study, the program of this study did not show an educational effect in the "constructive learning activities" of preservice teachers, but it was found to have an educational effect in "problem solving". In other words, in "constructive learning activity", most pre-service teachers were at 0 level before and after the program. The pre-service teachers designed the class to unilaterally provide technology to simply use it as a tool to explain subject content or revise misconceptions, and learners can passively acquire knowledge. However, in the case of "problem solving", the pre-service teachers who were at level 0 before the educational program changed to level 1. Before the program, the pre-service teachers designed classes to solve problems by memory without using technology, but after the program they planned classes that provides opportunities to approach and solve various problems through the technology presented by the teacher. However, there were not many pre-service teachers corresponding to level 2, which constitutes voluntary learning in which learners use technology to solve various problems while selecting and variously manipulating technology. In addition, as obstacles to the TPACK development of pre-service chemistry teachers, there were external factors such as lack of classroom support environment for TPACK implementation, lack of time for education planning, and inadequate technology competency. And there were internal factors such as perspectives of traditional education and negative attitude toward technology. In particular, the proportion of pre-service teachers who preceived inappropriate technical competency as an external obstacles of TPACK development was high. Therefore, it was necessary to develop an education program corresponding to type 2 or type 3 that enables TPACK development through TK for pre-service teachers.

  • In this study, the educational effect was investigated by providing a teaching program so that pre-service chemistry teachers could apply model ignorance education to teacher training practice. The teaching program was constructed in consideration of the sensemaking concept proposed in the study of Odden & Russ and the process of teacher sensemaking proposed by Asli et al. The subjects of this study were 23 pre-service teachers in the 4th year of chemistry education department at a teacher training university in the central region of Korea. In order to form a sensemaking for the model's ignorance education, the teaching program consisted of four stages; the initial idea generation stage, cognition of model's ignorance stage in a inconsistent situation, the lesson strategy construction stage for model ignorance education, and lesson plan & practice stage during teacher training practice. In the first stage of this program, pre-service teachers' initial ideas about the Arrhenius model and Bronsted-Lowry model of acid-base reaction, and the electron transfer model of the oxidation-reduction reaction were investigated. In the second stage, inconsistant situation that cannot be explained by the knowledge of model was presented to recognize the ignorance of the model. The third stage was to develop the teaching ability of model's ignorance through textbook analysis and lesson strategy composition activities. As a final stage, during the teacher training practice, the pre-service teachers were asked to plan and practice the implementation of the model's ignorance education. Through the teaching program to form a sensemaking for ignorance education of the models, pre-service teachers had come to recognize the ignorance of the model, acquired ability to organize and execute lesson strategies reflecting model ignorance, and acquired recognition of the educational value and necessity of teaching the ignorance of models.

  • The purpose of this study is to research on the professional development of pre-service chemistry teachers in terms of personal practical knowledge(PPK), and draw a discussion for pre-chemistry teacher education. A reflective discussion through a Community of Practice(CoP) activity has been conducted with 5 pre-service chemistry teachers studying in a college of education located in Seoul. The analysis of the results reveals that 'Subject-matter knowledge' is leaning toward massive chemical contents, 'Curriculum knowledge' is below the level of selecting, analyzing, and applying curriculum materials. 'Instruction knowledge', especially the knowledge of chemistry experiment and research, is not enough to lead secondary students' scientific experiment. 'Milieu of school knowledge' is stunted in growth for the reason of communication-deficiency between a college of education and a community, and among education- related groups. 'Self-knowledge' has been diminished not only because there is a bad influence from college classmates not wanting to be a teacher, but also a lack of communication in the chemistry-education department which can make pre-teachers' belief strong. In conclusion, it is especially needed for the chemistry-education department to strengthen pre-teachers' 'Self-knowledge' in order to develop PPK. This study suggests operating 'a professional community' that has a periodic meeting with pre-service teachers, teachers, professors, community people, education practitioners, and researchers. In addition, it would be effective for increasing pre-teachers' PPK to reconsider depth and direction of 'Subject-matter knowledge', to give an opportunity to examine curriculum materials critically and reorganize them, to improve the course of chemistry experimental subject to the way of improving pre-teachers' leadership in chemistry inquiry experiment, and to raise the quality of educational service activities.

  • In this study, the contents of the electron transfer model presented in the 4 chemistry I and the 4 chemistry II textbooks of 2009 revised curriculum and 9 chemistry I textbooks and 6 chemistry II textbooks of 2015 revised curriculum were analyzed in the viewpoint of model's Ignorance. In addition, 3 questions were developed to find out whether 24 pre-service teachers were perceived of the Ignorance of the electron transfer model. As a result, Most textbooks explain the redox reaction of covalent bond substances, which is an inconsistent context of the electron transfer model, with mixing oxidation number change and electron transfer or with electron transfer. In addition, the change to the development and use of the model emphasized in the 2015 revised curriculum was not clearly revealed in the curriculum comparison. Most pre-service teachers incompletely perceived or did not perceive Ignorance of the electron transfer model. Only 1 pre-service teacher perceived Ignorance of the model. In conclusion, the textbook description needs to be improved so that Ignorance of the model is revealed when the textbook describes the inconsistent situation of the electron transfer model. And through the education for pre-service teachers, it is necessary to provide an opportunity for pre-service teachers to perceive Ignorance of the electron transfer model.

  • In this study, we investigated pre-service science teachers' NOS-PCK by analyzing their NOS lesson planning and demonstration. Four pre-service science teachers participated in the study. They planned and demonstrated NOS lessons in the context of 'Science Inquiry Experiment' developed under the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. Their lessons were observed. All of the teaching-learning materials were collected, and semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The analyses of the result revealed that pre-service teachers mainly referred to the curriculum and textbooks when selecting the NOS learning objectives. However, they felt difficulty because the curriculum and textbooks did not clearly present the NOS to be dealt. Although all of them took explicit approaches, there were not many open and divergent reflective approaches. In addition, they expected that high school students would consider scientific knowledge absolute and would have negative perceptions of NOS lessons. They rarely assessed students' NOS learning, and were reluctant to assess. Finally, most of them had a negative perception that learning NOS is not necessary for all students. On the bases of the results, educational implications for improving the expertise of pre-service science teachers in NOS lessons were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Character-centered instruction model on pre-service science teachers' awareness of both character education and character education in science education. First of all, pre-questionnaires about the sixteen pre-service science teachers' awareness of character education and character education in science education were asked. Through the lectures during a semester, they received an education about CoProC(Collaborative Problem-Solving for Character competence) model using Character-centered instruction model and character education. After the implementation, their changes of awareness were inspected through post-questionnaires. As a result of the study, it was revealed that general pre-service science teachers' pre-awareness of character education was mostly negative. The pre-service science teachers were more aware of character education in science classes than general character education. Even that, there seemed to be a greater tendency to think in connection with specific content and subject matter and character education rather than developing competencies due to the nature of the science subject itself. However, the experiences of the CoProC model changed their perception about character into a competent point of view, and thus influenced the change in their perception of character education. Therefore, education on character education methods for pre-service science teachers at teacher training institutions will increase their expertise in character education and help establish effective character education in school in the long term.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the workshop to improve teachers' questions considering the context of discourse. Four pre-service science teachers in the fourth grade participated in the study. Pre-service science teachers participated in the workshop. The characteristics of their reflection on the question considering the context of discourse were analyzed. Pre-service science teachers considered the types of questions they learned in the workshop during the reflection. But the affective domains of students were rarely considered. Whether the students respond was considered as an important factor of reflection. The questions were evaluated based on the frequencies. A single question without context was reflected on. Various PCK elements were not considered comprehensively. Based on the results, the practical implications to develop a program for improving teacher expertise related to the questions considering the context of discourse were discussed.
