A Study on Acquisition of English Subjunctive Mood in EFL College Students (대학생의 영어가정법 습득에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to research the process of Korean university students' acquiring the subjunctive mood. To research this, we will propose three subjects of study as below. First, what correlations exist between the general English ability and the English subjunctive mood acquisition? Second what difference is there in English subjunctive mood acquisition to gender? Third, what difference is there in the English subjunctive mood acquisition according to English proficiency? The subject of a sample survey was 36 female and 37 male students, 73 students in total, who take English courses as a required subject at 'C' university in Gwangju. The necessary data for this study was obtained by the questionnaires with 40 questions about the subjunctive mood. The data analyzing method was ANOVA(analysis of variance between groups) through the statistics program SPSS 12.0. When the results of the questions were analysed, there was no significant difference in the English subjunctive mood acquisition according to gender, but according to English proficiency, the English subjunctive mood acquisition was different: advanced-, intermediate- and low group.

The Effects of Teaching University Mathematics in English (대학 수학 교육에서 영어 강의의 효과 연구)

  • A math class in Korean university was taught in English for one semester and the students' improvement was measured in math content and English proficiency. Pre and post test in 9 week intervals showed that math content loaming in the immersion class was superior to the non-immersed class. Especially, the immersion class showed remarkable improvement in difficult problems among math content test problems. The immersion class improved in math-related English, but not in general English. It is discussed that the particular English expressions for math are hardly separable from the math content knowledge in English because understanding and using those expressions correctly means the students' understanding of math concept in English and thus the math concept itself.

Korean College Students' Acquisition of English Tense through Reading (한국 대학생의 독해지문을 활용한 영어시제 습득)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how Korean EFL university students acquire an understanding of English tenses. To research this, we proposed two research questions of study as below. Firstly, what difference is there in English tense acquisition between an experimental group and a control group? Secondly, what difference is there in the English tense acquisition according to English proficiency? The subject of a sample survey was a 39 student experimental group and a 38 student control group, total 77 students, who take English courses as a required subject at 'C' university in Gwangju. The data needed for this study was obtained by the questionnaires with 40 questions about the English tense. The data analyzing method was t-test through the statistics program SPSS 12.0. There was a significant difference between the experimental group's tense acquisition ability and the control group's, even though low group showed no significant improvement in their tense acquisition ability. Studying English tense through reading led the students to be present in classes with interests, so the experimental group showed more academic accomplishments than the control group.

Perception of English Vowels By Korean Learners: Comparisons between New and Similar L2 Vowel Categories (한국인 학습자의 영어 모음 인지: 새로운 L2 모음 범주와 비슷한 L2 모음 범주의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how Korean learners perceive English vowels and further to test SLM which claims that new L2 vowel categories are more easily acquired than similar L2 vowel categories. Twenty Korean learners participated in English-to-Korean mapping test and English vowel identification test with target vowels /i, ɪ, u, ʊ, ɛ, æ/. The result revealed that Korean participants mapped the English pairs /i/-/ɪ/ and /u/-/ʊ/ onto single Korean vowel /i/ and /u/, respectively. in addition, both of English /ɛ/ and /æ/ were simultaneously mapped onto Korean /e/ and /ɛ/. This indicated that the Korean participants seemed to have perceptual difficulty for the pairs /i-ɪ/, /u-ʊ/, and /ɛ-æ/. The result of the forced-choice identification test showed that the accuracy of /ɪ, ʊ, æ/(ɪ: 81.3%, ʊ: 62.5%, æ: 60.0%) was significantly higher than that of /i, u, ɛ/(i: 28,8%, u: 28.8%, ɛ: 32.4%). Thus, the claim of SLM is confirmed given that /ɪ, ʊ, æ/ are new vowel categories whereas /i, u, ɛ/ are similar vowel categories. Further, the conspicuously low accuracy of the similar L2 vowel categories /i, u, ɛ/ was accounted for by over-generalization whereby the Korean participants excessively replaced L2 similar /i, u, ɛ/ with L2 new /ɪ, ʊ, æ/ as the participants were learning the L2 new vowel categories in the process of acquisition. Based on the findings this study, pedagogical suggestions are provided.

  • 1997년도에 시작된 초둥학교에서의 영어교육은 조기영어교육의 장점, 그 중에서도 어른에 비해 어린이는 보다 정확한 외국어 발음을 습득할 수 있다는 데에 그 기초를 두고 있다. 그러나 이러한 영어교육의 성과는 적절한 언어습득환경이 주어졌을 때에만 가능한 것으로 현재 초등학교에서 실시되고 있는 영어교육은 여러 가지 문제점과 보완점이 노출되고 있는 바, 이중 보다 효과적으로 정확한 영어발음을 제시하고 교육하는 것이 큰 문제점으로 지적되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 의사소통 능력 중심의 영어교육을 하기 위하여 특별히 한국 초등학교 어린이들이 영어를 발음할 때 나타나는 문제점들을 살펴보고 보다 정확한 영어발음을 낼 수 있도록 교육할 수 있는 방안을 제시해 보고자 한다. 먼저 초등학교 어린이들의 영어발음 특성과 제문제를 살펴보고, 보다 효과적인 발음지도를 위해 구체적인 발음지도 목표와 그 목표에 맞는 발음지도 법을 알아본다. 아울러 효과적인 내·외국인 교사교육의 중요성을 강조하고 이를 위한 방안을 제시하였다.

On Exploiting New Methods of Language Acquisition Offered by the Internet (인터넷이 제공하는 언어 습득의 새로운 방법 활용)

  • Instructive lessons in the language classrooms are extremely constrictive to language learners in improving their English skills, thus, the use of technology in education plays an important role in a language classroom. Results of language proficiency improvement of the learners vary depending on the extent of supplementary materials offered by the internet delivered to the learners. The purpose of the present study is to explore and propose a new approach of language acquisition offered by the internet. This study presents effective methods of using the internet in carrying out the written work. In this paper, we show that the relationship between participation of the learners in the class activities and improvement of English writing skills are mutually proportional.

Effects of College English FnF (Focus on Form) Class Types on Target Vocabulary and Grammar (대학 교양영어 FnF수업유형이 목표어휘와 목표문법의 습득에 미치는 효과)

  • This paper aims to explore a comparative instructional effects among meaning-based communicative language teaching, input-enhanced FnF instruction and output-enhanced FnF instruction in order to optimize the teaching methods of target grammar and vocabulary. The experiment selected three homogeneous groups of 30 students in each group for the comparison: One comparative group with communicative language teaching, one input-enhanced FnF group and another output-enhanced FnF group. The result indicates that the input-enhanced group outperformed the comparative group in the grammar test with statistical significance and the output-enhanced group overweighted the comparative group in the vocabulary test. However, no significant statistical difference was found between the input-enhanced group and the output-enhanced group. The conclusion from the result could bear the following pedagogical implication: The general English education must use the eclectic method of adopting communicative language teaching with FnF of input-enhanced target grammar and output-enhanced target vocabulary to supplement the students with the basic vocabulary and grammar.

A comparative study of mothers' beliefs on early English education between ESL and EFL contexts (영어조기교육에 대한 한국과 미국 거주 어머니의 신념 비교연구)

  • 본 연구는 질적 연구방법을 통해 한국 어머니들의 영어조기교육에 관한 신념을 분석하며, EFL 환경과 ESL 환경에 있는 어머니들의 영어조기교육에 관한 신념이 어떻게 다른지 분석함으로써 영어조기교육에 관한 어머니의 신념이 환경에 따라 어떠한 차이를 보이는지 비교하고자 한다. 영어를 제2언어로 사용하는 영어권 나라에 거주하는 한국 어머니와 한국에 거주하는 어머니의 신념을 비교하기 위해 미국과 한국에서 인구학적 배경이 비슷한 16명의 어머니를 선정하여 인터뷰하였다. 이들과의 인터뷰를 통해 각기 다른 환경에 거주하고 있는 두 그룹의 어머니들이 가지고 있는 영어조기교육에 관한 신념을 영어교육에 대한 동기, 교육방법, 제2외국어 습득을 중심으로 비교 분석하였다. 대체로 본 연구에 참여한 어머니들은 거주 지역에 상관없이 영어조기교육에 대해 긍정적 신념을 가지고 있었지만 교육시기에 대해서는 각기 다른 의견을 보였고, 영어교육의 목적은 학업적인 성취보다는 세계화된 시대를 살기위한 기본적이 의사소통 기술의 습득이라는 신념을 보였다. 반면, 한국에 거주하는 어머니들은 미국에 거주하는 어머니들에 비해서 가정에서 직접 자녀에게 영어를 가르치고자 하는 의지가 강했고, 미국에 거주하는 어머니들은 한국 거주 어머니들에 비해 문해 교육에 대한 관심도가 높고 실제적인 지도를 많이 행하고 있었다.

The acquisition effect by measurement periods of adult learners learned through English pattern practice (영어 패턴 연습을 활용한 성인 학습자의 측정 시기별 습득 효과)

  • This study was carried out to find out the acquisition effect by measurement periods of adult learners learning through English pattern practice. The subjects of this study were divided into adult learner groups including the learners in their 40s and those who were over 65 and the child group who were 8 years old as a comparative group. After the subjects had a pre-test at first, person agreement and tense were instructed though English pattern practice and right after that, they had a post-test. Then 4 weeks later, they had a delayed test. As a result, the acquisition result of adult learners learning though English pattern practice showed the largest rise by those in their 40s and the learners of those over 65. However the adult learners aged over 65 showed the largest drop in delayed test of the reading comprehension. Based on these results, it is necessary to develop teaching method for adult learners in consideration of their characters and weak points.

  • In foreign language, vocabulary is the most essential and fundamental elements. Traditional language learning methods that are to understand and to memorize the English contents can only be obvious limitations. In this paper, we proposed the speaking-centered learning methods based on cognitive strategies and speech recognition considering the learner characteristics. We have designed and implemented the cognitive strategy-based speaking training system for acquisition elementary English vocabulary. We were divided into control group and the experimental group and applied to the system to analyze the learning effect. The result of Analysis, the proposed system is increased motivation and achievement of learners. In addition, the proposed system is improved an academic learning participation, Project accomplish, self-interesting and leadership skills. Through this study, we expect that students improve the ability of practical skills in speaking English.
