The purposes of this study were to examine the influence of breakfast consumption frequency on school food waste and to compare its effect with food service satisfaction and food service management type. The subjects who participated in this study were composed of 978 first grade high school students from 30 high schools in Daegu. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis was carried out for the data analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. School food waste was estimated by visual evaluation method. The questionnaires containing breakfast eating frequency, food service satisfaction, and food service management type were surveyed. According to the results, school food waste was significantly affected by breakfast eating frequency. In contrast, food service satisfaction had a negative effect on school food waste, which was more significantly apparent in less frequent breakfast. Although the amount of lunch waste was influenced by food service satisfaction related with menu, it was not significantly affected by food service management type and food service satisfaction related with hygiene and service. In conclusion, the results indicate that eating breakfast is estimated as a characteristic strategy for improving efficiency of school food service by curtailing food waste. This study suggested that the importance of eating breakfast could be incorporated into the subjects of continuous nutritional education and the strategic planning for promoting efficiency of school food service.
In order to investigate the effects of phosphorus and iron levels in the diets containing fish meal as only protein source on the growth, feed conversion, body composition and blood characteristics of juvenile Korean rockfish, either graded monobasic potassium phosphate (MPP) of 1% (MPP-1), 2% (MPP-2), 3% (MPP-3) and 4% (MPP-4), or Fe-citrate (FC) of 0.022% (FC-1), 0.044% (FC-2), 0.066% (FC-3) and 0.088% (FC-4) was added to fish meal-based diet (MMP-0 or FC-0), respectively. Duplicate groups of 40 fish weighing 7g were fed the diets for 21 weeks. Weight gain, feed efficiency and nutrient retention of fish fed diets with different MPP levels were not significantly different (P>0.05). Lipid content of whole body decreased with an increase in dietary MMP (P<0.05). No significant differences were found in the Ht, Hb, total protein, or total glucose in serum among diets containing different MMP levels (P>0.05). Weight gain of fish fed the FC-0, FC-1 adn FC-3 diets was significantly higher than that of FC-4 diet (P>0.05), whereas feed efficiency, nutrient retention, hematological values (Ht, Hb, total protein, and total glucose), and whole body composition were not affected by dietary FC levels (P>0.05). The present results revealed that phosphate or iron supplementation to the diet containing 65% fish meal for juvenile Koran rockfish was not necessary.
Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are considered promising tools for tissue regeneration. However, ADSCs have very poor proliferation capacity. Therefore, fetal bovine serum (FBS) is generally added to the culture media of ADSCs. As FBS contains many uncharacterized components that may affect cellular functions, methods for serum-free cultures of ADSCs have been widely investigated. In this study, to develop an efficient method for a serum-free culture of ADSC-T, we used an ADSC line established by introducing the simian virus 40 (SV40) T gene into primary ADSCs. We then investigated the effect of amino acids, vitamins, and other components on the growth of ADSC-T. When the ADSC-T cells were plated with DMEM/F12 serum-free medium, the cells did not proliferate, and the mixture of amino acids, vitamins, and B27 supplement did not increase the growth of the cells. However, when the ADSC-T cells were provided with serum-free DMEM/F12 after they had been cultured with serum-supplemented DMEM for 24 h, the cells proliferated, and the vitamins and B27 supplement increased the cell growth. Stem-Pro serum-free medium also appeared to be useful as a suspension culture for the ADSC-T cells. The ADSC-T cells secreted large amounts of proteins of around 70 kDa. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and fibroblast growth factor basic (FGF basic) were secreted by ADSC-T in larger amounts in the serum-free culture than in the serum-supplemented culture.
Four different silages were prepared out of citrus peel with or without supplementation with wheat bran and/or urea. Proximate nutrients and volatile fatty acids were analysed on the silages, both fresh and dried. All silages were dried and ground, and were compared with dried citrus peel (not ensiled) and wheat bran in a folding trial. A total of 360 male chicks of Maniker broiler strain was divided into and assigned to 6 treatments with 5 replications. Each experimental diet included each of 6 test material at the level of 6% and the feeding trial lasted 8 weeks, after which a metabolism trial was conducted. Results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. Ensiling increased protein content of the citrus peel on the dry matter basis and supplementing the silage material with wheat bran and/or urea further increased protein contents of the silages. 2. Adding wheat bran and/or urea to silage material also increased volatile fatty acid contents of the silages. After drying organic acid contents of the silages were reduced and there were no differences in organic acid contents of the dried citrus peel silages, differently treated, 3, Broilers fed dried citrus peel and those fed dried citrus peel silages gained numerically less weight than those fed wheat bran. But there were no significant differences in body weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency among different treatments 4. There were no significant differences in nutrient utilizability, nitrogen retention and metabnlizable energy contents among treatments. It could be concluded that ensiling is an effective way of storing citrus peel and dried citrus peel silage could be used in broiler diets up to 6% without adverse effects.
An Experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Natufermen$^{(R)}$;(Aspergillus oryzae) supplementation on the performance, ammonia gas production, microbial population in manure and serum IgG in pigs. Forty eight cross bred(YLD) weanling pigs(35d old) were assigned to 4 treatments; Control(C), $C^+$ Natufermen 0.1%, $C^+$ Natufermen 0.2% $C^+$natufermen 0.3% for 6 week feeding trial. Each treatment had 4 replications of 3 pigs each. Natufermen$^{(R)}$ supplemented treatments tended to increase ADG and ADFI, but there were no significant differences among treatments. Supplementation of Natufermen$^{(R)}$ at the level of 0.2% improved ADFI/ADG(P<0.05). Ammonia gas production from manure was not significantly affected by treatments. All Natufermen$^{(R)}$ treatments increased in DM, crude ash and phosphorus digestibility(P<0.05). Serum IgG decreased as supplemention level of Natufermen$^{(R)}$ increased(P<0.05). Supplemtation of Natufermen$^{(R)}$ at 0.1% and 0.2% increased fecal Lactobacilli population at 3 wks after feeding treated diets(P<0.05). It is concluded that supplementation of Aspergillers oryzae product Natufermen$^{(R)}$ improved feed conversion ratio and digestibility of DM, crud ash and phosphours. Fecal ammonia gas production was not significantly affected but serum IgG level was decreased and CFU of fecal Lactobacilli was increased at 3 wks after feeding Natufermen$^{(R)}$ supplemented diets.

This research aimed to suggest an efficient improvement plan for school food services by investigating the operating situation and recognition of menu management in school food services for school food service dietitians (and nutrition teachers) in Chungbuk. A total of 328 questionnaires were distributed to school food service dietitians (and nutrition teachers) in Chungbuk by e-mail in September, 2010. A total of 265 questionnaires (80.8%) were used for the analysis. The highest allocation of nutrients and calories per day in school food services was 1:1.5:1.5 (breakfast : lunch : dinner) (38.5%). The reasoning for applying a flexible allocation of nutrients and calories per day was 'considering the ratio of students who do not eat breakfast' (59.2%). And the way to apply the flexible allocation for nutrients and calories per day was 'by agreement from the school operating committee in arbitrary data without situation surveys' (86 respondents, 49.4%), and 'by agreement from the school operating committee in analysis data through situation surveys' (80 respondents, 46.0%). The operational method of standardized recipes was 'cooking management site of national education information systems' (87.5%) and the items included in standardized recipes were menu name, food material name, portion size, cooking method, nutrition analysis, and critical control point in HACCP. The main reason for not utilizing all items of a cooking management site of the national education information system was 'no big trouble in menu management even though it is used partly (29.1%). In addition, the highest use of standardized recipe was for 'maintaining consistency of food production quantity' (74.0%).
An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding extruded-floating (EP), slow-sinking (SP), fast-sinking (FP) or moist (MP) prepared with two different levels of fish meal, respectively, on the growth, feed efficiency and body composition in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). Triplicate groups of the 50 fish averaging 75g were fed each of the following diets : high fish meal (72% in diet)-EP, low fish meal SP, low fish meal-FP and low fish meal-MP for 15 weeks. Dietary fish meal levels or pellet types did not influence weight gain, feed efficiency and bo요 composition of the fish (P>0.05). Findings showed that each of EP, SP or FP can by used as a practical type of diet for Koran rockfish.
'Probiotics' as a live microbial feed supplementation which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its microbial balance and it is known to as a substitue for antibiotics in livestock feed industry. Lactic acid bacteria as a Lactobacillus sp. is formed acid and decrease pH in gastro-intestine that is result in suppress harmful microorganism. Lactobacillus sp. also produces vitamin and a variety amino acids. Yeast as a saccharomyces sp. secretes digestive enzymes, decreases ammonia emission and increases feed palatability by alcohol and glutamic acid. The effects of dietary probiotics in monogastric animals that improve weight gain and feed efficiency ratio and decrease diarrhea accurence frequency in pigs. Also, probiotics increase egg production ratio and beneficial microorganisms in laying hens. In broiler, they have more gain weight and lower blood cholesterol concentrations by probiotics. However, the other study reported probiotics supplementation in animal diets has no effect on ADG, G/F or performance. Thus, future study in these area will allow for more efficient use of the probiotics, selection of more superior microorganism and development of more efficient environment-friendly probiotics like a photosynthetic bacteria.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a web-based nutrition counseling could lead to beneficial outcomes in food intake and serum lipids of patients with hyperlipidemia. Forty hyperlipidemic patients, twenty of them were hypercholesterolemia and the other twenty were hypertriglyceridemia, participated in a web-based nutrition counseling program. At the first nutrition counseling, the patients were counselled through interview and then follow up nutrition counseling was accomplished four times during eight weeks through a web-based internet program. Various markers of disease risk including anthropometric indices, food intakes and serum lipid levels were measured before and after the web-based nutrition counseling. After nutrition counseling, body mass index significantly decreased in both groups and waist to hip ratio significantly decreased in male hypercholesterolemic patients (p<0.05). Total-cholesterol decreased from 262.2 mg/dL to 234.9 mg/dL, LDL-cholesterol decreased from 186.8 mg/dL to 160.5 mg/dL in hypercholesterolemic patients, triglyceride decreased from 288.6 mg/dL to 211.9 mg/dL and total-cholesterol decreased from 217.2 mg/dL to 198.7 mg/dL in hypertriglyceridemic patients after nutrition counseling. Anthropometric value and nutrient intakes were improved after nutrition counseling. Energy, fat and saturated fatty acid intakes decreased significantly in both groups (p<0.05). Therefore, this study shows that the web-based nutrition counseling is effective in improving food habit and influences positively in serum lipid levels of the patients. In addition, these results indicate that internet presents us with potential as a new medium for nutrition counseling in informationized society.
A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the influence of feeding Lactobacillus reuteri culture (LR) on productive performance, intestinal microflora and availability in laying hens. Four hundred and eighty, Isa-Brown layers, 49 weeks of age, were fed diets supplemented with LR at the level of 0 (control), 0.1, 0.2, and $0.4\%$ of the diets for eight weeks. Egg production and egg weight were measured daily. Feed intake was weighed every two weeks. Egg quality was measured three times at the start, mid-term, and end of the experiment. Intestinal microflora were examined for Lactobacillus spp., E. coli and Salmonella at the end of the experiment. Overall egg production was the highest in $0.2\%$ LR (P<0.05), but that of $0.1\%$ or $0.4\%$ LR treatments did not significantly differ from that of control. Egg weight was significantly higher in LR feeding group than the control (P<0.05). Daily egg mass was significantly higher in $0.2\%$ and $0.4\%$ LR treatments compared to the control and $0.1\%$ LR (P<0.05). The number of jumbo and extra large eggs were increased in LR supplemented groups, especially in $0.1\%$ LR. Feed intake of layers fed LR supplemented diets tended to be lower than the control. However, feed conversion ratio significantly improved in LR supplemented groups (P<0.05). Availability of dry matter and crude protein improved significantly in $0.4\%$ LR treatment (P<0.05). But, those of ether extract and crude ash were not significantly different among treatments. Eggshell breaking strength and eggshell thickness were not significantly influenced by LR supplementation, and Haugh unit and yolk index were also similar to the control. Total number of Lactobacillus spp. in ileum and cecum fed LR supplemented diets were significantly higher than those of the control (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in intestinal E. coli and Salmonella in all treatments. Therefore, it is concluded that dietary supplementation of Lactobacillus reuteri culture can improve the laying performance, feed efficiency and intestinal Lactobacillus.
