  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of mothers' condition including the level of knowledge and parenting stress that mothers have on infant development. The subjects of this study are 270 mothers whose infants range in age from birth to 36 months. The instruments used are: 1)KCDI(Knowledge of Child Development Inventory, Larsen & Juhasz, 1985) 2)Parenting Stress Scale(Kim & Kang, 1997), and a demographic questionnaire. The data analyses use SPSS 12.0 which employs basic statistics, reliability test, and t-test. This study is time-lag design covering five years. Therefore, the data collected originates from 2002 and 2007 to constitute input from two times. The results of this study indicate that the average pregnancy from the 2007 statistics occurred 0.46 months earlier, after marriage, as compared to pregnancies in 2002. Mothers who gave birth by natural birth increased from 59.9 % to 75.3 % over the five year period. Regarding knowledge of infant development, the level of mothers' knowledge was lower in 2007 than in 2002 according to study results. The level of parenting stress of mothers increased for the 2007 statistics as compared to the 2002 survey.

  • Purpose : There are many causes of hematochezia in neonates and during early infancy. Cow's milk allergy is considered to be the most common cause of bloody stools in infants; however, cow's milk allergy is diagnosed in relatively few patients. In a significant proportion of case investigations, the etiology of hematochezia is not determined. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the clinical course and prognosis of patients with hematochezia of unknown etiology. Methods : The patients were <4-month-old infants with hematochezia in whom infectious and surgical etiologies had been excluded. We investigate retrospectively the clinical course and laboratory finding. We also perform 2-years follow-up study and evaluate prognosis of the patients. Results : In all study patients, RAST milk was negative. All patients had self-limited hematochezia. In 2-years of follow-up, the prognosis of patients was good. There were no differences at 2-year regarding allergic tendencies of the patients, as determined by the increase in total eosinophil count. Conclusion : Hematochezia in neonates and during early infancy is generally a benign and self-limiting symptom. Based on 2-years of follow-up, the prognosis of the patients is good.

  • Purpose : Since the first febrile UTI(urinary tract infection) in infants is commonly associated with vesicoureteral reflux(VUR), imaging studies such as renal ultrasonography, dimercaptosuccinic acid(DMSA) scan, and voiding cystourethrography(VCUG) are recommended. How-ever, because of the invasiveness of VCUG, it is difficult to perform in all young infants with febrile UTI. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical and laboratory characteristics, radiologic findings between the young infant group(1 to 6month, n=121) and the old infant group(7 to 24months, n=91), and to determine the clinical and radiologic risk factors that predict the presence of VUR before the VCUG in patients with their first febrile UTI under 2 years of age. Methods : We reviewed the medical records of 211 first febrile UTI patients under 2 years of age retrospectively, and compared clinical, laboratory, and radiologic findings between the two age groups. Results : The young infant group had a male preponderance and a higher incidence of Escherichia coli in their urine culture. The incidence of acute renal parenchymal defects on DMSA scans were significantly increased in the young infant group. The incidence of VUR was 29% in patients who had a VCUG, but there were no differences in the incidence of VUR between the two age groups. Abnormal findings on DMSA scan significantly correlated with higher incidence of VUR in the young infant group. Incidence of abnormal findings DMSA scan significantly increased with high grade VUR(garde III-V ). Conclusion : In treating first febrile UTI patients under 2 years, physicians have to consider such characteristics as age less than 6 months, male preponderance, E.coli in the urine culture, and increased incidence of abnormal findings on DMSA scans which correlated well with the presence of VUR. The results of the DMSA scan might help us to predict the presence of VUR before the VCUG in first febrile UTI and help us to reduce performing invasive radio-logic studies especially in the young infant group. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare health promoting behavior between working and non-working mothers with infants and toddlers, and to investigate factors affecting the mothers'health promoting behavior. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted through conveniently sampled 403 women who visited the child health clinics at two public health centers. The questionnaire included the Health Promoting Life Style Profile (HPLP) and a visual analogue scale for subjective health status. ANCOVA, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were conducted using SPSS ver. 21. Results: Working mothers' average HPLP score ($2.30{\pm}0.37$) was higher than non-working mother's ($2.15{\pm}0.37$). The score of the physical activity subscale was lowest among the subscales and there was a difference between the two groups. Subjective mental health status was the only predictor of working mothers'health promoting behavior, and it explained 23.2% of variance in health promoting behavior. Subjective mental health status, education, and age were the predictors of non-working mothers' health promoting behavior and they explained 27.2% of variance in health promoting behavior. Conclusion: According to the findings, both working and non-working mothers' health promoting behaviors were low. To promote mothers' health, it is necessary to develop diverse community health promotion programs to support mothers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing parenting stress in primiparas. Method: The participants in this study were 198 primiparas of infants aged 1-6 months who visited well baby clinics in 5 hospitals. The data were collected from April 15 to June 15, 2003. Results: The mean score for parenting stress was 2.4 of a possible 5 and thus considered average. The score for parenting stress was significantly correlated with the level of maternal perception of the infant and the level of social support. The score for parenting stress was significantly different according to the education level of the primiparas and prenatal management. For the primiparas, social support($20\%$) and maternal perception of the infant($9\%$) were significant predictors explaining parenting stress. Conclusions: Nursing interventions to improve maternal perception of the infant and increase social support should be provided for primiparas in order to reduce parenting stress.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of sensory stimulation program administered by primipara on the physical growth and mother-infant feeding interaction for the first 6 months of infancy. Method: Data were collected from December 1, 2001 to June 30, 2003. A total of 35 mothers and their infants were assigned to a control(n=17) and an experimental(n=18) group. Mothers in the experimental group received education related to sensory stimulation program and administered to their infants twice a day for 6 months. Both groups were measured the weight, length, head circumference and chest circumference of infants at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, 18 weeks, and 22 weeks and the mother-infant feeding interaction at 6 weeks, 10 weeks through the home visiting. Result: Compared to the control group, the experimental group had significantly larger increases in head circumference for intervention period. In addition to, the experimental group showed significantly higher score in mother-infant interaction than control group. Conclusion: These data suggested that sensory stimulation program administered by primipara may improve the physical growth of full term infant and mother-infant feeding interaction.

  • This research aims at examining the relationships between mother-toddler interaction and its related variables. A total of 49 toddlers and their mothers were participated and observed in the child lab during free play. The main results of this study are as follows. First, among the mother-toddler interaction, 'involvement' was frequently used in comparison with the 'rejection' was the hardly used in their interaction. Second, the mothers' sensitivity, parenting stress, and the mother-toddler interaction had no significant difference by the mothers' job status or gender of toddlers. However, their parenting stress was lower in working mothers or mothers who have girls. Third, mother-toddler interaction was significantly correlated with the mothers' sensitivity, parenting stress, parenting style, and the temperament of toddlers. On the basis of this results, the implication related to the variables influencing mother-toddler interaction was discussed.

  • The development of corpus in recent years has attracted increased research on spoken Korean. Nevertheless, these research outcomes are yet to be meaningfully and adequately reflected in Korean language textbooks. The reported speech marker '-dae' is one of these areas that need more attention. This study investigates whether or not in textbooks '-dae' is clearly explained to English-speaking learners to prevent confusion and misuse. Based on a contrastive analysis of Korean and English, this study argues three points: Firstly, '-dae' should be introduced to Korean learners as an independent sentence ender rather than a contracted form of '-dago hae'. Secondly, it is necessary to teach English-speaking learners that '-dae' is not equivalent to the English report speech form. It functions more or less as a third person marker in Korean. Learners should be informed that '-dae' is used for statements in English, if those statements were hearsay but the source of information does not need to be specified. This is a very distinctive difference between Korean and English and should be emphasized in class when 'dae' is taught. Thirdly, '-dae' should be introduced before indirect speech constructions, because it is mainly used in simple statements and the frequency of '-dae' is very high in spoken Korean.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mothers' parenting beliefs and supportive interaction on maternal parenting stress. It also examined variations of the results by household income levels and mothers' employment status. Participants of the study were 770 mothers of children aged 23-31 months who were a part of the 2010 wave of the National Survey for Panel Study on Korean Children. The analyses revealed that parenting stress was affected by mothers' parenting beliefs and supportive interaction. Mothers' supportive interaction has been shown significantly to predict parenting stress in all four groups of this study. The results demonstrated that the strength of the relationship between parenting stress and parenting beliefs and reciprocal interaction varied based on the combination of income and work status. These findings suggested that income and employment status are important to examine collectively.
