  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of a group theraplay program on the affection improvement between mothers and their children to prevent the factors dangerous to the development of the infants in the low-income families by organizing and carrying out the program. In this way, the study investigated the changes in the interaction between mothers and their infants, and in the mothers' efficacy in rearing. First, the results from the analysis of preliminary and post tests showed significant differences in 4 aspects such as structure, challenge, intervention and rearing. Especially, the results from the analysis of MIM showed that the interaction between mothers and their infants increased more in post tests than preliminary tests. Second, for the rearing efficacy, there were significant changes in general rearing efficacy, communication ability and teaching ability. These results showed that the theraplay for the affection improvement of mothers and their infants had effects on their interaction improvement.

  • This study examined the effect of parental socioeconomic position on the association between birth outcomes and infant mortality in early and late 2000's. Linked Birth and Infant Death data sets from 2001 to 2003 (T1) and from 2006 to 2008 (T2), provided by the Korea National Statistical Office, were used for analysis. Birth outcomes were categorized into four groups: normal term, small-for-gestational age (SGA), large-for-gestational age (LGA) and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). Infant death was defined as the death of a live-born child under one year of age; indicators of parental socioeconomic position were limited to parental education and occupation. The results showed that T2 infant mortality hazard ratios of SGA and IUGR have increased compared to T1. Particularly, preterm and low birth weight babies with shorter gestational age and lighter birth weight than T1 have elevated in T2, possibly indicating that population quality might be continuously aggravated. Moreover, the effect of maternal age on infant mortality has disappeared, rather that of parents' socioeconomic position has increased during the periods, which entailed growing disparities in infant mortality by their social class. Further studies should be therefore done to estimate the effect of parental socioeconomic position on the relationship between birth outcomes and infant mortality in the near future.

  • Objective: The purpose of this research is to explore the influence of infant teachers' teaching efficacy and sensitivity level on organizational commitment. Methods: The subjects of the study were 206 infant teachers working in pre-schools in "Region S." In the research, a survey was given out using a teaching efficacy tool used by Hee-Kyung Kwak (2011), a teacher-sensitivity measurement scale created by Kwang-Mi Min (2014), and an organizational commitment measuring tool modified and improved by Jong-Kak Lee (2013). The collected data went through the SPSS 21.0 Win Program to gather the information regarding reliability analysis, technical statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: First, the infant teachers' teaching efficacy was average, their sensitivity level was above average, and their organizational commitment was a little above average. Second, the infant teachers' teaching efficacy and the organizational commitment showed a static relation. The sensitivity level showed a static relation with affective commitment and normative commitment in organizational commitment. Third, the infant teachers' organizational commitment was largely influenced by general efficacy which is a subfactor in teaching efficacy, and by consistency which is a subfactor of sensitivity. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this research suggest that teachers' teaching efficacy and sensitivity level are crucial in improving their organizational commitment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relations among the parenting stress, maternal sensitivity to infant cues, parenting environment of first-time mothers. Method: The participants were 194 first-time mothers of babies aged 1-6 months who visited well-baby clinics in 5 hospitals. The data were collected from April 15 to June 15, 2003. Results: The parenting stress level was moderate with a mean score of 2.4(range 1-5). The parent domain and parent-child relationship domain of the parenting stress scale were significantly correlated with maternal sensitivity to infant feeding cues (r=-.178, p<.05; r=-.197, p<.01). Parenting stress was significantly correlated with childrearing environment(r=-2.19, p<.01). Parenting stress and childrearing environment were significantly different according to the educational level of the mothers and their prenatal care. Conclusions: Nursing interventions to reduce parenting stress in first-time mothers are needed to improve maternal sensitivity to infant cues and childrearing environment which foster infant development.

  • This study examined relations between infants' strategies for emotional regulation and maternal responsiveness. Fifty 24-month-olds were observed for six kinds of emotional regulation strategy during four negative emotion-eliciting tasks; their mothers were observed for five styles of maternal responsiveness during toy-centered free play. Infants used different strategies according to the kinds of negative emotioneliciting tasks; their strategies correlated with maternal responsive styles. In the anger-eliciting tasks, infants used "distraction" and "self soothing." In the fear-eliciting tasks, they used "avoidance" and "problem solving." Infants who received more negative feedback from their mothers used the "irritation" strategy. Infants who got received more positive feedback from their mother used the "getting reference" strategy.

  • This study explored the effect of mother's employment status on family environment and physical environment and psychological environment, the main concern of this which factors have effects on marital satisfactions of either employed or non-employed mothers. First, the result of analysis on family environment according to mothers' employment status shows non-employed mother's parental stress is higher than employed mother's. Besides, non-employed mother's self-esteem is lower than employed mother's, and non-employed mother's depression is significantly high. Concerning fathers' factors, the level of conflict between husband and wife is higher among husbands when their wives are employed. In the light of childrens' factors, non-employed mothers consider that their children display more negative emotion and more picky. Children's development of employed mothers is included in normal development range more than that of non-employed mothers. Second, conflict between husbands and wives have an significantly negative effect on marital satisfaction regardless wife's employment status. Husbands' cooperation in child-rearing and marital satisfaction have a positive effect on wives' marital satisfaction. The significant factor which influences on employed mother's marital satisfaction is education level of wives. This study would be meaningful in that infancy home environment was compared focusing on the mothers' employment status, and some factors which factors(variables) have impacts on marital satisfaction of infancy mothers were examined.

  • We followed up all the infants born to the married women under 50 years of age residing in Gunwee county, Kyungpook Province, between 1 April 1985 and 31 March 1987, and those born to the married women under 50 years residing in Hapchun County, Kyungnam Province, between 1 March 1987 and 28 February 1988, to their first birthday. Likewise, we followed up the infants born to the women who visited the MCH Center of South District Health Center in Taegu City for delivery between 1 April 1985 and 31 March 1987 to the 27th day after birth and obtained the infant mortality rate and the neonatal mortality rate, respectively. There were 17 infant deaths among 1,359 live births in Gunwee and Hapchun Counties and the infant mortality rate was 12.5 per 1,000 live births. Out of 17 infant deaths, 82.4 percent were neontal death and 17.6 percent were postnonatal deaths. Out of the 6,001 live births born to the women visited the MCH Center, 4,834 infants (80.6%) were followed up to the 27th day after birth. Of these 4,834 infants, 36 infants died before the 28th day after birth and thus the neonatal mortality rate was 7.4 per 1,000 live births. Comparison of the maternal characteristics and the birth weight between infants who were followed up and those who were lost to follow-up showed no significant differences. Assuming that the neonatal and postneounatal mortality ratio had been 6:4, the infant mortality rate for the infants born at the MCH Center would have been 12.3 per 1,000 live births. Taking such findings into consideration as the infant mortality rate observed in Gunwee and Hapchun Counties, the neonatal mortality rate at the MCH Center, the causes of infant deaths, and the low birth weight incidence rate, a conservative estimate of infant mortality rate of Korea would be between 12 and 15 per 1,000 live births in $1985{\sim}1988$.

  • We r viewed a policy of primary surgical closure of large ventricular septal defects in small infants. Sixty-three infants met criteria for inclusion in the study, and were divided into two groups based on age: group 1 infants aged less than 5 months(n = 31), and group 2 infants aged 5 months or more(n = 32). Both groups had similar variation in ventricular septal defect location(paramembranous versus muscular), and showed no significant difference in left to right shunt and in ratio of systemic and pulmonary vascualr resistance. Three early deaths(9.7%) occurred in group 1, but no death(0%) in group 2. The causes of death were preoperative cardiac arrest and cerebral injury followed by postoperative respiratory insufficiency in two patients, and preoperative tracheomalacia followed by laryngeal edema and respiratory arrest in one Two patients in group 1 showed postoperative low cardiac output syndrome(6.5% in group 1 versus 0% in group 2). There was no late death during the follow-up per od in both groups. No surviving patients had postoperative patch leakage, or required a second operation. These results indicate that primary surgical closure of large ventricular septal defects, if logical perioperative care is accompanied, can be saefly performed in small infants aged less than 5 months with low postoperative mortality or morbidity rates.

  • Most nutrients taken by pregnant women are secreted into their breast milk. Food contains choline together with betaine, and in human body choline is oxidized to betaine which transfer methyl group. The aim of the study was to estimate the concentrations of choline and betaine in breast milk of Korean lactating women and the choline and betaine intakes of their infants. Total choline, free choline and betaine concentrations in breast milk of some lactating women living in Daejon Metropolitan city were analyzed every month by using HPLC-MS and enzymatic method during the first five months. Total choline concentrations of breast milks were 157.64 mg/L (1.52 mmol/L), 157.83 mg/L (1.52 mmol/L), 165.99 mg/L (1.60 mmol/L), 153.67 mg/L (1.48 mmol/L), 145.05 mg/L (1.39 mmol/L) by month after delivery for five months. The concentrations of total choline and free choline in breast milks were not significantly changed for the five months while the betaine concentrations gradually decreased. Daily intake of total choline of the infants appears to be adequate for the infant's requirement according to the US DRI; 124.6 mg/d, 120.9 mg/d, 126.5 mg/d 104.1 mg/d from 2nd to 5th month after birth. Free choline and betaine intakes of the infants were not significantly changed during the four months except showing decrease in betaine intake per kg body weight. Choline intakes of the infants more correlated with choline concentrations of the breast milks (r = 0.982, p = 0.000) than intake amount of the breast milk (r = 0.414, p = 0.028). These results suggest that the choline intake of Korean breast-fed infants appears to be adequate and the intake could be affected by the choline concentration of the breast milk.
