The Entry-Descent-Landing process of a lander involves many environmental and technical challenges. To solve these problems, recently, terrestrial relative navigation (TRN) technology has been essential for landers. TRN is a technology for estimating the position and attitude of a lander by comparing Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data and image data collected from a descending lander with pre-built reference data. In this paper, we present a method for generating descent dataset and extracting landmarks, which are key elements for developing TRN technologies to be used on Mars. The proposed method generates IMU data of a descending lander using a simulated Mars landing trajectory and generates descent images from high-resolution ortho-map and digital elevation map through a ray tracing technique. Landmark extraction is performed by an area-based extraction method due to the low-textured surfaces on Mars. In addition, search area reduction is carried out to improve matching accuracy and speed. The performance evaluation result for the descent dataset generation method showed that the proposed method can generate images that satisfy the imaging geometry. The performance evaluation result for the landmark extraction method showed that the proposed method ensures several meters of positioning accuracy while ensuring processing speed as fast as the feature-based methods.
Similarly to the edges defined in a 2D image, we can define the geometric features representing the boundary of the distinctive parts appearing on 3D meshes. The geometric features have been used as basic primitives in several applications such as mesh simplification, mesh deformation, and mesh editing. In this paper, we propose geometric livewire and geometric livelane for extracting geometric features in a 3D mesh, which are the extentions of livewire and livelane methods in images. In these methods, approximate curvatures are adopted to represent the geometric features in a 3D mesh and the 3D mesh itself is represented as a weighted directed graph in which cost functions are defined for the weights of edges. Using a well-known shortest path finding algorithm in the weighted directed graph, we extracted geometric features in the 3D mesh among points selected by a user. In this paper, we also visualize the results obtained from applying the techniques to extracting geometric features in the general meshes modeled after human faces, cows, shoes, and single teeth.
Bilateral filter (BF), functioning by two Gaussian filters, domain and range filter is a nonlinear filter for sharpness enhancement and noise removal. In infrared (IR) small target detection field, the BF is designed by background predictor for predicting background not including small target. For this, the standard deviations of the two Gaussian filters need to be changed adaptively in background and target region of an infrared image. In this paper, the proposed bilateral filter make the standard deviations changed adaptively, using variance feature of mean values of surrounding block neighboring local filter window. And, in case the variance of mean values for surrounding blocks is low for any processed pixel, the pixel is classified to flat background and target region for enhancing background prediction. On the other hand, any pixel with high variance for surrounding blocks is classified to edge region. Small target can be detected by subtracting predicted background from original image. In experimental results, we confirmed that the proposed bilateral filter has superior target detection rate, compared with existing methods.

This paper suggests techniques to reduce coding time which is a problem in traditional fractal compression and to improve fidelity of reconstructed images by determining fractal coefficient through adaptive selection of block approximation formula. First, to reduce coding time, we construct a linear list of domain blocks of which characteristics is given by their luminance and variance and then we control block searching time according to the first permissible threshold value. Next, when employing three-level block partition, if a range block of minimum partition level cannot find a domain block which has a satisfying approximation error, we choose new approximation coefficients using a non-linear approximation of luminance term. This boosts the fidelity. Our experiment employing the above methods shows enhancement in the coding time more than two times over traditional coding methods and shows improvement in PSNR value by about 1-3dB at the same com- pression rate.
Geophysical exploration methods are very useful for generating high-resolution images of underground structures, and such methods can be applied to investigation of buried cultural properties and for determining their exact locations. In this study, image feature extraction and image segmentation methods were applied to automatically distinguish the structures of buried relics from the high-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR) images obtained at the center of Silla Kingdom, Gyeongju, South Korea. The major purpose for image feature extraction analyses is identifying the circular features from building remains and the linear features from ancient roads and fences. Feature extraction is implemented by applying the Canny edge detection and Hough transform algorithms. We applied the Hough transforms to the edge image resulted from the Canny algorithm in order to determine the locations the target features. However, the Hough transform requires different parameter settings for each survey sector. As for image segmentation, we applied the connected element labeling algorithm and object-based image analysis using Orfeo Toolbox (OTB) in QGIS. The connected components labeled image shows the signals associated with the target buried relics are effectively connected and labeled. However, we often find multiple labels are assigned to a single structure on the given GPR data. Object-based image analysis was conducted by using a Large-Scale Mean-Shift (LSMS) image segmentation. In this analysis, a vector layer containing pixel values for each segmented polygon was estimated first and then used to build a train-validation dataset by assigning the polygons to one class associated with the buried relics and another class for the background field. With the Random Forest Classifier, we find that the polygons on the LSMS image segmentation layer can be successfully classified into the polygons of the buried relics and those of the background. Thus, we propose that these automatic classification methods applied to the GPR images of buried cultural heritage in this study can be useful to obtain consistent analyses results for planning excavation processes.

The aim of the study is to test a hypothesis that quasi-breath-hold (QBH) biofeedback improves the residual respiratory motion management in gated 3D thoracic MR imaging, reducing respiratory motion artifacts with insignificant acquisition time alteration. To test the hypothesis five healthy human subjects underwent two gated MR imaging studies based on a T2 weighted SPACE MR pulse sequence using a respiratory navigator of a 3T Siemens MRI: one under free breathing and the other under QBH biofeedback breathing. The QBH biofeedback system utilized the external marker position on the abdomen obtained with an RPM system (Real-time Position Management, Varian) to audio-visually guide a human subject for 2s breath-hold at 90% exhalation position in each respiratory cycle. The improvement in the upper liver breath-hold motion reproducibility within the gating window using the QBH biofeedback system has been assessed for a group of volunteers. We assessed the residual respiratory motion management within the gating window and respiratory motion artifacts in 3D thoracic MRI both with/without QBH biofeedback. In addition, the RMSE (root mean square error) of abdominal displacement has been investigated. The QBH biofeedback reduced the residual upper liver motion within the gating window during MR acquisitions (~6 minutes) compared to that for free breathing, resulting in the reduction of respiratory motion artifacts in lung and liver of gated 3D thoracic MR images. The abdominal motion reduction in the gated window was consistent with the residual motion reduction of the diaphragm with QBH biofeedback. Consequently, average RMSE (root mean square error) of abdominal displacement obtained from the RPM has been also reduced from 2.0 mm of free breathing to 0.7 mm of QBH biofeedback breathing over the entire cycle (67% reduction, p-value=0.02) and from 1.7 mm of free breathing to 0.7 mm of QBH biofeedback breathing in the gated window (58% reduction, p-value=0.14). The average baseline drift obtained using a linear fit was reduced from 5.5 mm/min with free breathing to 0.6 mm/min (89% reduction, p-value=0.017) with QBH biofeedback. The study demonstrated that the QBH biofeedback improved the upper liver breath-hold motion reproducibility during the gated 3D thoracic MR imaging. This system can provide clinically applicable motion management of the internal anatomy for gated medical imaging as well as gated radiotherapy.
Due to the revision of the River Act and the enactment of the Act on the Investigation, Planning, and Management of Water Resources, a regular bed change survey has become mandatory and a system is being prepared such that local governments can manage water resources in a planned manner. Since the topography of a bed cannot be measured directly, it is indirectly measured via contact-type depth measurements such as level survey or using an echo sounder, which features a low spatial resolution and does not allow continuous surveying owing to constraints in data acquisition. Therefore, a depth measurement method using remote sensing-LiDAR or hyperspectral imaging-has recently been developed, which allows a wider area survey than the contact-type method as it acquires hyperspectral images from a lightweight hyperspectral sensor mounted on a frequently operating drone and by applying the optimal bandwidth ratio search algorithm to estimate the depth. In the existing hyperspectral remote sensing technique, specific physical quantities are analyzed after matching the hyperspectral image acquired by the drone's path to the image of a surface unit. Previous studies focus primarily on the application of this technology to measure the bathymetry of sandy rivers, whereas bed materials are rarely evaluated. In this study, the existing hyperspectral image-based water depth estimation technique is applied to rivers with vegetation, whereas spatio-temporal hyperspectral imaging and cross-sectional hyperspectral imaging are performed for two cases in the same area before and after vegetation is removed. The result shows that the water depth estimation in the absence of vegetation is more accurate, and in the presence of vegetation, the water depth is estimated by recognizing the height of vegetation as the bottom. In addition, highly accurate water depth estimation is achieved not only in conventional cross-sectional hyperspectral imaging, but also in spatio-temporal hyperspectral imaging. As such, the possibility of monitoring bed fluctuations (water depth fluctuation) using spatio-temporal hyperspectral imaging is confirmed.

In this paper, a registration method is presented to register partial 3D point clouds, acquired from a multi-view camera, for 3D reconstruction of an indoor environment. In general, conventional registration methods require a high computational complexity and much time for registration. Moreover, these methods are not robust for 3D point cloud which has comparatively low precision. To overcome these drawbacks, a projection-based registration method is proposed. First, depth images are refined based on temporal property by excluding 3D points with a large variation, and spatial property by filling up holes referring neighboring 3D points. Second, 3D point clouds acquired from two views are projected onto the same image plane, and two-step integer mapping is applied to enable modified KLT (Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi) to find correspondences. Then, fine registration is carried out through minimizing distance errors based on adaptive search range. Finally, we calculate a final color referring colors of corresponding points and reconstruct an indoor environment by applying the above procedure to consecutive scenes. The proposed method not only reduces computational complexity by searching for correspondences on a 2D image plane, but also enables effective registration even for 3D points which have low precision. Furthermore, only a few color and depth images are needed to reconstruct an indoor environment.

A stable reference voltage generator is necessary to the infrared image signal readout circuit(ROIC) to improve noise characteristics of signal originated from infrared devices, that is, to gain good images. In this paper, bandgap circuit operating at cryogenic temperature of 77K for Infrared image ROIC(readout integrated circuit) was first made. It demonstrates practical use possibility through taking measurements and estimations. Bandgap circuit is a representative voltage reference circuit. Most of bandgap reference circuits which are presented so far operate at room temperature, and their characteristic are not suitable for infrared image ROIC operating at liquid nitrogen temperature, 77K. To design bandgap circuit operating at cryogenic temperature, suitable circuit is selected and the parameter characteristics of used devices as temperature change are seen by a theoretical study and fitted at liquid temperature with considering such characteristics. This circuit has been fabricated in the Hynix 0.6um standard CMOS process, and the output voltage measured shows that the stability is 1.042±0.0015V over the temperature range of 60K to 110K and is better than bandgap circuits operated at room temperature.

The latest video coding standard, HEVC can improve the coding efficiency significantly compared with the H.264/AVC. However the HEVC encoder requires much larger computational complexities. The longer 8-tap interpolation filter of the HEVC which is used in a non-integer motion estimation is one of the reasons and this paper aims to reduce the computational complexities. First of all, three shorter-tap interpolation filters for a motion estimation process are tested rather than the use of a standard interpolation filter. In addition, the fast searching strategies to reduce the number of comparisons for choosing the best non-integer motion vector are proposed. Finally, the interpolation process is selectively applied according to the searching strategy. By combining all of the techniques, the experimental results show that the encoding times can be reduced by 13.6%, 18.5% and 21.1% with the coding efficiency penalties of 0.7%, 1.5% and 2.5%, respectively. For the full-HD video sequences, the coding efficiency penalties are reduced to 0.4%, 1.1% and 1.6% at the same level of the encoding time savings, which shows the effectiveness of the proposed schemes for the high resolution video sequences.
