  • This study was conducted to apply with an air duct for the cooling and a utilizing cultivating method that uses the fruiting node and the defoliation to the high-temperature vertical and hydroponic cultivation of the oriental melon. The lower fruiting node (LF) was to remove all third vines generated from 5 nodes of a secondary vine. The higher fruiting node (HF) was fruiting on the third vine generated from a first node of the third vine. The direction of the stem string; upward (UW), downward (DW). Four treatment conditions were applied with the LF-UW, LF-DW, HF-UW (control), and HF-DW. The leaf age of melon leaves was measured for photosynthesis at 3 days intervals, and the fruit characteristic was conducted on 79 fruits in each treatment. The photosynthesis rate steadily increased after leaf development, reaching 20.8 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1 on the 10 days, gradually increasing to 21.3 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1 on the 19 days, and reaching 23.4 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1 on the 32 days. After that, it lowered to 16.8 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1 on the 38 days and dropped significantly to 7.6 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1 on the 47 days. As a result of the fruit characteristics by fruiting nodes, the treatments of the fruit length was 12.6-13.4 cm, respectively, which was significant, and the fruit width was 7.9- 8.6 cm, respectively, was not significant. The soluble content ranged from 12.9 to 15.7°Brix, and the significance of all treatments, and higher than of LF-DW and HF-UW. The photosynthesis rate of melon leaves was good until 32 days after leaf development, but after that, the rate decreased. As for fruit quality, it was conformed that melons can be cultivated at the LF because the fruit enlargement and soluble content dose not decrease even when set at the LF. Results indicated that those can be used for LF and defoliation in the development of vertical and hydroponic cultivation method in high-temperature season.

  • Foliar nutrient concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, total sugar, starch, ether extracts were determined for three Pinus spp., that is, P. rigida, P. taeda, P. rigida${\times}$taeda, divided by tree age (16~19-year old, 6-year old), leaf age (current, over-winter, one-year old), planting location(Kyonggi-Do, Chungnam-Do, Junbuk-Do). Foliar compositions of inorganic nutrients were generally put in order of N(0.764~1.502%)>K((0.130~0.491%) $$\geq_-$$Ca(0.165~0.442%)>Mg(0.054~0.121%)${\fallingdotseq}$P(0.041~0.129%) in all the species. The concentrations of total sugar and ether extracts respectively ranged from 5 to 15% of the needles in dry weight base. The concentrations of N, P and K were similarly high in the over-winter needles (sampled in February), but those of Ca were generally high in one-year old needles. As a whole, inorganic nutrient levels in the needles showed different patterns with species, three age, leaf age and location. There were generally positive correlations between nitrogen and phosphorus in foliar concentrations. Foliar concentrations of total sugar showed the ranking of P. rigida > P. rigida${\times}$taeda > P. taeda and the lowest levels in February. Starch in the needles were contained about 10% of total sugar, and the variations of starch level were not regular with the studied factors. Ether extracts contents increased more of less with leaf age but changed irregularly with the other factors.

  • Effect of the seeding rate and nursery period on the growth and characteristics of seedling suitable for rice transplanter was analyzed and the following results were obtained. The optimum seeding rate were about 100 to 150g in the 30 day old seedling, and 150g per nursery box in the 25day old seedling, respectively, as having adequate leaf number, plant height, dry weight, hardiness and crop growth rate for transplanting. Excessively low and high seeding rate resulted in excessive aging and weakness of the seedling at the later growth stages.

  • The chemical forms of calcium compounds in perilla leaves and their changes after harvest were investigated. The four types of calcium compounds extracted were as follows: water soluble calcium(F-I: mainly water soluble organic acid salts and calcium ion), IN-sodium chloride soluble calcium(F-II: calcium-pectate and calcium-carbonate), 2%-acetic acid soluble calcium(F-III: calcium-phosphate), and 5%-hydrochloric acid soluble calcium(F-IV: calcium-oxalate). The calcium content of perilla leaves was not found to vary with their age. Relatively high levels of F-l (28.4~39.5) and F-II (34.4~47.4) were found in young and mature leaves while the F-IV constituted 15.6~21.6% of the total calcium. The F-IV calcium contents of perilla. spinach and jaso were 16.8, 42.4 and 22.3%, respectively. In contrast to calcium. magnesium existed as water soluble magnesium at the highest content of 90.6% in spinach while 62.9% and 16.8% of the total magnesium existed as water soluble magnesium in perilla and jaso, repectively. The change in vitamin C and F-IV calcium content were examined for 7 days after harvest. Vitamin C content decreased slowly at the beginning but rapidly from the 4th day after harvest. On the other hand, the F-IV calcium content increased slowly at the beginning and rapidly from the 4th day of observation. This result suggests that the increase in F-IV calcium is related to the decrease in vitamin C content. This phenomena was more distinctly observed at 2$0^{\circ}C$ than 5$^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Zn and Cu on physiological responses of tobacco at the different leaf ages for the purpose of phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated field. Plant height was significantly decreased at Zn and Cu concentrations of 1.0 mM or higher. Especially, root dry weight decreased more (50% reduced) than shoot dry weight. Zn and Cu accumulation in the shoot and root was dramatically increased after 2.0 mM treatment. The accumulation pattern was different by leaf aging in that Zn accumulated more in senescence leaf and Cu accumulated more in growing leaf. The amounts of heavy metal accumulations per plant were 146,000 mg/kg for Zn and 20,500 mg/kg for Cu at 2.0 mM treatment. The proper harvesting time would be suggested as vegetative growth stage for Zn and reproductive stage for Cu. The concentrations of other inorganic ions (Mg, Mn, Fe) were decreased when Zn and Cu concentrations were increased. Cu concentration and Zn concentration of both shoot and root were decreased in Zn treatment and Cu treatment, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the availability of covering material used for raising seedlings in the rice nursery bed. The pre-germinated seeds of a rice cultivar 'Chilbo' were sown into seedling tray ($60{\times}30{\times}2.5cm$) on 20th April and 3rd May 2010. Polypropylene spunbonded fabric (PSF) and lagging were used for covering materials in rice nursery bed. The growth characteristics of seedlings were evaluated at 8, 15 and 25 days after sowing (DAS) in the nursery beds covered with PSF and lagging, respectively. The plant height of 8-day old seedlings grown in lagging nursery bed was longer by 2cm than those in PSF nursery bed when the seeds were sown on 20th April, but seedling quality grown in lagging nursery bed was poor compared with that in PSF nursery bed. The growth characteristics of 15-day old seedlings were similar to that of 8-day old seedlings. The plant height of 8, 15 and 25-day old seedlings grown in lagging nursery was longer than those in PSF nursery when the seeds were sown on 3rd May. The seedling quality grown in PSF nursery was better than that in lagging nursery. The seedlings grown in PSF nursery have more leaves and better seedling quality compared with that of lagging nursery. The seedling quality was remarkably decreased with the increase of nursery period in lagging bed but seedlings quality were recovered at 5 days after hardening treatment by removing the lagging.

  • The photosynthetic rates according to leaf positions in tomato plants were investigated in relation to leaf age and flowering rate. In the experiment investigating the diurnal change of photosynthetic rates, three leaves below the 4th cluster was checked every hour from 2 hours before sunrise and 3 hours after sunset. It was checked twice with the replication of 3 plants. The photosynthetic rate increased sharply for 1 hour right after sunrise and remained steady until 2 hours before sunset. This trend can be applied to determine the irrigation schedule. In the experiment investigating the photosynthetic rates according to leaf positions, it three leaves below each clusters from 1st to 4th cluster were checked. Flowering rate was also investigated. The photosynthetic rates showed a decreasing tendency steadily after flowers bloomed fully, regardless of the leaf position. It seems to be because the leaves below the cluster with fully-bloom flowers lost their activities. This result suggests the flowering rate or the position of flower has deep relation with the photosynthetic rates of the concerned leaves. From the results the leaves under flowering cluster may be the good part to investigate the photosynthetic rate to evaluate the crop's activity, even the photosynthetic rates are different according to the position of clusters.

  • Transgenic herbicide-resistant sweet potato plants [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] produced through a biolistic transformation were used in this study. The objective of this research was to find out a rapid and reliable assay method for confirming glufosinate-ammonium resistance. The techniques tested include whole-plant bioassay, one leaf bioassay, and leaf disk bioassay. Parameters investigated in this study were leaf injury and ammonium accumulation at 1 and 5 days after treatment of glufosinate-ammonium. In the leaf disk bioassay, leaf injury of the transgenic line 7171 was 1.9-fold less affected by glufosinate-ammonium than the wild type. The leaf injury of 7171 in one leaf and whole-plant bioassays was 59- and 92-fold less affected by glufosinate-ammonium, respectively, compared with that of the wild type. Leaf disk, one leaf, and whole-plant bioassays showed that ammonium accumulation of the 7171 was 2 to 20-, 4 to 43-, and 6 to 115-fold less affected by 0.5-5 mM glufosinate-ammonium than that of the wild type. All three bioassays successfully distinguished the resistance from the transgenic lines, but one leaf bioassay is the simplest and quickest. Leaf injury and ammonium accumulation were the same in leaves 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 of 3 mM glufosinate-ammonium treated plants or nontreated plants. The one leaf bioassay was chosen as the standard procedure for future confirmation of resistance in transgenic sweet potato because it is a rapid and reliable assay.
