Reinforced concrete is used for bridges and large structures that are constructed with social overhead capital because they are economically and semi-permanently integrated with reinforcing bar and concrete. However, when the chloride ion in the concrete destroys the passive film of the reinforcing bar by the marine exposure environment and the snow remover used in the winter season, and the reinforcing bar is corroded by various chemical and physical actions, the durability is deteriorated in a short period, and the life span is shortened. In this study, a repair method to recover the durability of the initial structure by effectively removing chloride ion from the damage caused by salting of the above mentioned reinforced concrete was conducted.

In general, carbonation and chlorine ions are the most harmful causes of deterioration of concrete structures. Recently, a method has been developed to control the corrosion of rebar in concrete containing chloride by impregnating a Surface coating material with a inhibitor. In this study, accelerated carbonation and differential thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTA) and CASS tests were carried out to evaluate the characteristics of Surface coatings containing Organic Corrosion inhibitors which are excellent in corrosion inhibition and fix degradation causes $CO_2$ and $Cl^-$. As a result of the experiment, TG-DTA analysis and accelerated carbonation showed that $CO_2$ was directly reacted with amine derivative in concrete by the incorporation of Organic Corrosion inhibitor. In other words, $CO_2$ was immobilized and carbonation inhibition effect was confirmed. In addition, in the CASS test, the specimen coated with the Surface coating material containing the Organic Corrosion inhibitor with $Cl^-$ fixing property showed no corrosion until the 28th day and had excellent performance in preventing corrosion of a rebar by the chloride ion.
Nitrite-Type hydrocalumite (calumite) is a material that can adsorb chloride ions ($Cl^-$) that cause corrosion of reinforce bars and liberate the nitrite ions ($NO_2{^-}$) that inhibit corrosion in reinforced concrete. In this study, polymer-modified mortars using two types of epoxy resin with calumite are prepared with various polymer binder-ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20% and calumite contents of 0, 5%. The specimens are tested for chloride ion penetration, carbonation, drying shrinkage and corrosion inhibition. As a result, the chloride ion penetration and carbonation depth of PMM using epoxy resin somewhat increases with increasing calumite contents, but those remarkably decreases depending on the polymer-binder ratios. The 28-d drying shrinkage shows a tendency to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and calumite content. Unmodified mortars with calumite content of 5% did not satisfy quality requirement by KS. However, it was satisfied with KS requirement by the modification of epoxy resin in cement mortar. On the whole, the carbonation and chloride ion penetration depth of epoxy-modified mortars with calumite is considerably improved with an increase in the polymer-binder ratio regardless of the calumite content, and is remarkably improved over unmodified mortar. And, the replacement of the portland cement with the calumite has a marked effect in the corrosion-inhibiting property of the epoxy-modified mortars.

The requirement for durability of concrete bridge deck is increasing as the deterioration for the concrete bridge deck exposed to severe environment has been increased. For this reason, the concern about high-durable concrete is being high. Recently, a metakaolin is highly spotlighted as new admixture because its strength and durability are equivalent to silica fume. On the other hands, there are few researches for the metakaolin concrete bridge deck in domestic. So many various long-term data on the mechanical property and durability is needed to apply metakaolin concrete at the concrete bridge deck construction field. This study is aim to evaluate the long-term mechanical properties and durability of metakaolin concrete bridge deck with curing age. Mechanical properties are estimated by the compressive and flexural strength, and the drying shrinkage, the chloride resistance, the scaling, and freezing and thawing characteristics are compared with curing age. According to the results, when the metakaolin concrete is used, the development of compressive and flexural strength proceed in both the early and old ages. It is also improved the resistance of chloride penetration, freezing and thawing in concrete. It was showed that replacement of metakaolin was efficient for the reduction of the drying shrinkage.

The purpose of this study is to understand the necessity for waterproofing and corrosion-resistant technique application on concrete water tank used in water supply. Relevant research materials and regulation were collected, reviewing for the case studies of sample structures aged over 20 years, and experimental studies on chloride conduction for the high performance concrete and penetration properties of water repellency of liquid type materials. The result is that the concrete water tank in the water supply is needed for waterproofing and corrosion-resistant material coating to maintain long term durability due to the constant environmentally induced degradation deterioration often caused by chloride attack.

Chloride penetration into concrete is a hot issue of concern all over the world, notwithstanding, very few attempts have been conducted to explore the effect of cracks on choride penetration. Cracks provoke to lose a main function of watertightness of concrete and lead to reduce the service life of concrete. For this reason, it is necessary to define a critical crack width to prevent a quick chloride penetration through crack. In this study, experiment is focused on establishing a critical crack width in terms of chloride penetration. Concrete specimens with different crack widths I crack lengths have been subjected to rapid chloride migration testing. In a side of analytical solution, a simple approach to quantify the chloride diffusion coefficient of only crack zone excluding sound concrete was proposed. The result clearly showed a critical crack width of 0.03 mm. Based on the experimental results, a phenomenological model was proposed to explain the meaning of critical crack width in practical engineering. In this model, cracked concrete zone was divided into three zones. These zones corresponded to a wide crack, a zone with micro-cracks and an uncracked zone.

In this study, catechol-functionalized chitosan (Cat-Chit), a well-known bioinspired polymer that imitates the basic structures and functions of living organisms and biological materials in nature, was synthesized and combined with cement mortar in various proportions. The compressive strength, tensile strength, drying shrinkage, accelerated carbonation depth, and chloride-ion penetrability of these mixes were then evaluated. In the ultraviolet-visible spectra, a maximum absorption peak appeared at 280 nm, corresponding to catechol conjugation. The sample containing 7.5% Cat-Chit polymer in water (CPW) exhibited the highest compressive strength, and its 28-day compressive strength was ~20.2% higher than that of a control sample with no added polymer. The tensile strength of the samples containing 5% or more CPW was ~2.3-11.5% higher than that of the control sample. Additionally, all the Cat-Chit polymer mixtures exhibited lower carbonation depths than compared to the control sample. The total charge passing through the samples decreased as the amount of CPW increased. Thus, incorporating this polymer effectively improved the mechanical properties, carbonation resistance, and chloride-ion penetration resistance of cement mortar.

Heavy weight concrete can be used in marine concrete structure to improve resistance against high wave energy. However, heavy weight aggregate, which is an indispensable material for heavy weight concrete, is difficult to be supplied in large quantities because its use is limited due to its high cost. In this work, the applicability of heavy weight by-products, copper and 3 month aged steelmaking slags, were evaluated as sources of heavy weight aggregate for marine concrete structures. Experimental results showed that copper slag was found to be a stable material for marine concrete structure. However, 3 month aged steelmaking slag showed significant expansion by $80^{\circ}$ water immersion test and ASTM C 1260 test. In addition, depth of chloride ion penetration in concrete was higher at which steelmaking slags were located. It was associated with porosity of steelmaking slag, and for this reason, steelmaking slag was not found to be suitable for marine concrete structure.
Many methods have been introduced to protect the corrosion of embedded steel in RC structure. One of the methods that restrain corrosion of steel is corrosion inhibitor. The technology that delayed the progress of corrosion is developed recently by converting active rust to passive rust. However, the performance for concrete structure is not fully examined because this corrosion inhibitor is developed for normal metal product. In this study, the application of corrosion inhibitor that use tannin acid is investigated by concrete specimen. According to the results, tannin acid corrosion inhibitor does not occur reduction of workability and strength in concrete. When corrosion inhibitor is added more than 4% per cement weight, the penetration depth of chloride decrease about 10%. Also, corrosion resistance of concrete is improved because tannin acid corrosion inhibitor has an effect on converting the rust of steel into stable state. It is showed in special that the addition more than 6% is effective in corrosion resistance.

In this study, blast furnace slag powder was used in concrete to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to recycle industrial waste. Blast furnace slag powder is a byproduct of smelting pig iron and is obtained by rapidly cooling molten high-temperature blast furnace slag. The powder has been used as an admixture for cement and concrete because of its high reactivity. Using fine blast furnace slag powders in concrete can reduce hydration heat, suppress temperature increases, improve long-term strength, improve durability by increasing watertightness, and inhibit corrosion of reinforcing bars by limiting chloride ion penetration. However, it has not been used much due to its low compressive strength at an early age. Therefore, this study evaluates the effects of steam curing for increasing the initial strength development of concrete made using slag powder. The relationship between compressive strength, SEM observations, and XRD measurements was also investigated. The concrete made with 30% powder showed the best performance. The steam curing seems to affect the compressive strength by destroying the coating on the powder and by producing hydrates such as ettringite and Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate gel.
