  • It is time-consuming to estimate chloride diffusivity of concrete by concentration difference test. For the reason chloride diffusivity of concrete is mainly tested by electrically accelerated method, which is accelerating the movement of chloride ion by potential difference. In this study, portland cement concrete and concrete containing with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (40 and 60% of cement by weight) with water-cementitious material ratio 40, 45, 50 and 60% were manufactured. To compare with chloride diffusivity calculated from the electrically accelerated test and immersed test in artifical seawater, chloride diffusivity tests were conducted. From the results of regression analysis, regression equation between accelerated chloride diffusivity and immersed chloride diffusivity was linear function. And the determinant coefficient was 0.96 for linear equation.

  • When the RC structure repaired by patching repair method, which method refilles with patching repair material after removes degraded area, It is necessary to determine chloride ion's permeation from outside of the RC structure repaired by patching repair material. Therefore, in this study, damage from sea environment of structure was predicted, moreover, diffusion coefficient of concrete also determined to figure out rebar's corrosion and concentration of chloride ion. RCPT(Rapid Chloride Permeability Test) was used for ditermination of patching repair material's diffusion coefficient, also connection between material thickness and effect of chloride ion's permeation was examined in analytically. Results which derived by experimental test was used in FEM(Finite Element Method) and equation suggested by JSCE to predict concentration of chloride ion in different distance from surface.

  • The changes in the resistance to chloride ingress of concrete using a ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) according to curing conditions were examined. The curing conditions were divided in air-dry curing and under-water curing. Three concrete mixures with the GGBFS replacement ratio of 0%(control), 30%, and 60% were prepared. For tests, evaluations of concrete compressive strength, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient were performed. As the GGBFS replacement ratio increased, the concrete compressive strength of the in air-dry cured specimens decreased compared to under-water cured specimens. When the chloride ion diffusion coefficient was measured, the chloride ion diffusion coefficient decreased as the GGBFS replacement ratio increased. However, the diffusion coefficient of the in air-dry cured specimen was increased up to 111% compared with the under-water cured specimen.

  • Recently, as many big marine concrete structures increase, it is necessary that chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete shall be evaluated but it will take a long time to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete. Accordingly, many test methods are suggested to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient in a short period time by the promotion in electro chemical ways but the systematic study for this is insufficient. Therefore, this study evaluates chloride ion penetration and diffusion features by three representative electric promotion tests targeting for three different cements whose ingredients are different and analyzes the correlationship between them. As a result, diffusion features of chloride ion varied according to the cement ingredients and three ingredients cement in which blast furnace slag powder and fly ash are mixed in constant ratio, which shows the most excellent cement diffusion properties. For diffusion properties of chloride ion, the correlationship between test methods are good.

  • The long term integrity of concrete cask is very important for spent nuclear fuel dry storage system. However, there are serious concerns about early deterioration of concrete cask from creaking and corrosion of reinforcing steel by chloride ion because the cask is usually located in seaside, expecially by combined deterioration such as chloride ion and heat, carbonation. This study is to investigate the relation between temperature and chloride ion diffusion of concrete. Immersion tests using 3.5% NaCl solution that were controlled in four level of temperature, i.e. 20, 40, 65, and $90^{\circ}C$, were conducted for four months. The chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete was predicted based on the results of profiles of Cl- ion concentration with the depth direction of concrete specimens using the method of potentiometric titration by $AgNO_3$. Test results indicate that the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion increases remarkably with increasing temperature, and there was a linear relation between the natural logarithm values of the diffusion coefficients and the reciprocal of the temperature from the Arrhenius plots. Activation energy of concrete in this study was about 46.6 (W/C = 40%), 41.7 (W/C = 50%), 30.7 (W/C = 60%) kJ/mol under a temperature of up to $90^{\circ}C$, and concrete with lower water-cement ratio has a tendency towards having higher temperature dependency.

  • Evaluation of chloride penetration is very important, because induced chloride ion causes corrosion in embedded steel. Diffusion coefficient obtained from rapid chloride penetration test is currently used, however this method cannot provide a correct prediction of chloride content since it shows only ion migration velocity in electrical field. Apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion based on simple Fick's Law can provide a total chloride penetration magnitude to engineers. This study proposes an analysis technique to predict chloride penetration using apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion from neural network (NN) algorithm and time-dependent diffusion phenomena. For this work, thirty mix proportions with the related diffusion coefficients are studied. The components of mix proportions such as w/b ratio, unit content of cement, slag, fly ash, silica fume, and fine/coarse aggregate are selected as neurons, then learning for apparent diffusion coefficient is trained. Considering time-dependent diffusion coefficient based on Fick's Law, the technique for chloride penetration analysis is proposed. The applicability of the technique is verified through test results from short, long term submerged test, and field investigations. The proposed technique can be improved through NN learning-training based on the acquisition of various mix proportions and the related diffusion coefficients of chloride ion.

  • In this study, in order to find the improvement effect of metakaolin for using improvement of strength in concrete structures, it is investigated the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and adiabatic temperature rise test. As a result, due to the mixing of metakaolin, it has been confirmed reducing diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and could prevent down of slump for use of adding fly ash. Therefore, ensuring resistance to chloride ion penetration into concrete, it is possible to enlarge the W/B ratio and reduce the adiabatic temperature rise by mixing of metakaolin. So, it is confirmed that the durability of concrete structures is increased.

  • This study were evaluated the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC). Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evalate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC are effected on the mix proportion factor including latex content, and water-cement ratio.

  • Concrete is a durable and cost-benefit construction material, however performance degradation occurs due to steel corrosion exposed to chloride attack. Penetration of chloride ion usually decreases due to hydrates formation and reduction of pores, and the reduced chloride behavior is considered through decreasing diffusion coefficient with time. In the work, HPC (High Performance Concrete) samples are prepared with 3 levels of W/B (water to binder) ratios of 0.37, 0.42, and 0.27 and 3 levels of replacement ratios of 0%, 30% and 50%. Several tests containing chloride diffusion coefficient, passed charge, and compressive strength are performed considering age effect of 28 days and 180 days. Chloride diffusion is more reduced in OPC concrete with lower W/B ratio and GGBFS concrete with 50% replacement ratio shows significant reduction of chloride diffusion in higher W/B ratio. At the age of 28 days, GGBFS concrete with 50% replacement ratio shows more rapid reduction of chloride diffusion than strength development, which reveals that abundant GGBFS replacement has effective resistance to chloride penetration even in the early-aged condition.

  • Among the deteriorating agents, chloride ion is reported to be one of the most harmful ions due to its rapid diffusion and direct effect on steel corrosion. Cold joint which occurs in mass concrete placing is vulnerable to shear resistance and more severe deterioration. The paper presents an quantitative evaluation of chloride diffusion coefficient in OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete containing cold joint. GGBFS concrete shows $6.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$ which is almost 30% level of OPC concrete results and the trend is repeated in the case of cold joint concrete. Compared with OPC concrete, GGBFS concrete is evaluated to have better resistance to chloride penetration, showing 0.30 times of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete without cold joint 0.39 times with cold joint, respectively.
