Continuous Near-field Mixing with Variable Oceanic Conditions (해양수리특성의 변화를 고려한 연속적 근역혼합거동)

  • The temporal variability in near-field mixing characteristics of discharging plumes in oceanic environment was investigated using the time series data of the buoyant jet parameters. Based on the currents and density profiles observed in Masan outfall site and effluent discharge flowrates for 63days of summer season, the temporal variabilities and those occurrence frequency were obtained by line plume equations. The results show that wide range of variability in Masan outfall's mixing characteristics was found due to the temporal changes of effluent flowrates and ambient oceanic conditions. The near-field dilution was in the range of 30~71 with the averaged dilution of 34, which was a good agreement with field measurements of salinity deficit. The length of mixing zone was in the range of 5.4~36.2 m with the average of 9.5 m, and the plume rise height was in the range of 8.1~10.2 m with the average of 8.9 m. However, only the 30~44% of the whole results are higher than the averages, which indicates the necessity of this frequency analysis with the continuously measured data for designing and managing the ocean outfall system.

The Effects of Dietary Chinese Cabbage Kimchi Juice on the Lipid Metabolism and Body Weight Gain in Rats Fed High-Calories-Diet (배추김치 즙 투여가 고 열량 섭취 흰쥐의 지질대사 및 체중변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Weanling male rats of Wistar strain were fed relatively high-calories-diet containing 1% (K$_1$ group), 5% (K$_{5}$ group) and 10% Chinese cabbage kimchi juice (K$_{10}$ group) for 4 weeks to study their effects on body weight gain rate, serum lipids levels and other blood biochemical parameters. In this study it was found out that significant decrease in body weight gain rate, diet efficiency ratio, serum triglyceride level, serum total cholesterol level, blood glucose level and LDL-cholesterol level was observed in $K_{10}$ group as compared to control group fed only high-calories-diet. Significant increase in HDL-cholesterol level, GPT activity, GOT activity and creatinine level was found in $K_{10}$ group as compared to control group. But creatinine level, GPT and GOT activity of $K_{10}$ group were within the normal ranges. The results suggest that long term intake of traditional Chinese cabbage kimchi in large dose have the lowering effect on blood lipid and blood glucose level. There is no possibility of adverse actions on renal and hepatic functions by ordinary intake of Chinese cabbage kimchi in spite of being rich in salt and hot spices such as garlic, onion, ginger and red pepper.r.r.

Spawning Density and Recruitment of Janpanese Anchovy, Engraulis japonica in the Southern Sea of Korea in 2007 (2007년 남해안 멸치의 산란밀도와 어장가입)

  • Spatio-temporal distribution of eggs and larvae of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonica in the southern sea of Korea was determined using data obtained from icthyoplanktonic surveys and oceanographic observations between Goheung Peninsula and Goeje Island from May to August 2007. Commercial anchovy catch and size composition from four local fishery cooperative associations were also analyzed in relation to the geographic distribution of eggs and larvae. The abundance of anchovy eggs increased from May to July and was lowest in August. Eggs were mainly distributed between Namhae Island and Goeje Island, where water temperatures were $15{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ and salinities were 32~35‰. In 2007 anchovy landings between Namhae Island and Goeje Island were 11,409 tons at Tongyeong association, 4,137 tons at Masan association, and 2,487 tons at Sacheon association. However, landings between Goheung and Yeosu Peninsula were only 4,411 tons (at Yeosu association). The catch by anchovy tow net was high in the area where eggs were abundantly distributed. This indicates that the distribution of egg density was directly correlated with recruitment of E. japonica. All growth stages were abundant in the study area, indicating that this area is a major spawning and growing ground of E. japonica in Korean waters.

Estimates of Flushing Time in a Bay using the SCS Curve Number Method (SCS 유출곡선지수법(流出曲線指數法)을 이용한 만내(灣內) 담수(淡水) 교체시간(交替時間)의 추정(推定))

  • The SCS Curve Number(CN) method has become widely accepted as a procedure of estimating stormflow volumes for design and natural events in small watersheds. The applicability of this method for calculating the flushing time was evaluated as compared with the net volume transport(NVT) method in Masan Bay, Korea. It is shown that the flushing time using the CN method ranged from 10.9 to 15.3 days under the well mixed condition, that the time using the NVT method was 13.9 days averaged over 6 days of field data. These results were revealed that two methods calculated the approximate times as shown above. The relationships between the run-off, Qr, and the flushing time, t, are expressed as the following forms. $t_1=228.79Q_r^{-0.9996}$ in case of well mixed condition, (1) $t_2=131.06Q_r^{-1.0}$ in case of two layered model. (2) Those empirical expressions are represented that the relationships between Q and t are nonlinear as those as Bumpus obtained in Boston Inner Harbour. Therefore, the CN method will permit calculation of the flushing time for any given bay to be unexpected as water balance under the condition of short-time (0.5 day) data, instead of NVT method based on the long-time (at least 3 days over) data.

Temporal and Spatial Variation of Nutrient Elements in Surface Seawater off the West Coast of Korea (황해 중동부 해역 표층수에서 영양염 원소의 시공간적 분포)

  • Temporal and spatial variations of nutrient elements (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate) in surface seawater off the west coast of Korea were investigated during three periods of field survey aboard R/V Eardo of KORDI (May 1995 and June 1996) and a patrol vessel of the National Maritime Police (November 1995). In general, the concentrations of nutrient elements were lowest in June and highest in November except for ammonia that showed the lowest concentration in May and the highest in November. The results tell us that the development of thermocline and tidal front restricts riverine and benthic supply of nutrient elements to surface waters in June in the offshore regions of the study area which become nutrient-depleted due to phytoplankton bloom in spring. In late fall (November) the level of nutrient concentrations of the surface waters of the study area become high due to vigorous vertical mixing within the water column, which supplies nutrient-enriched bottom water to the surface waters.

Outlier Detection and Treatment for the Conversion of Chemical Oxygen Demand to Total Organic Carbon (화학적산소요구량의 총유기탄소 변환을 위한 이상자료의 탐지와 처리)

  • Total organic carbon (TOC) is an important indicator used as an direct biological index in the research field of the marine carbon cycle. It is possible to produce the sufficient TOC estimation data by using the Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) data because the available TOC data is relatively poor than the COD data. The outlier detection and treatment (removal) should be carried out reasonably and objectively because the equation for a COD-TOC conversion is directly affected the TOC estimation. In this study, it aims to suggest the optimal regression model using the available salinity, COD, and TOC data observed in the Korean coastal zone. The optimal regression model is selected by the comparison and analysis on the changes of data numbers before and after removal, variation coefficients and root mean square (RMS) error of the diverse detection methods of the outlier and influential observations. According to research result, it is shown that a diagnostic case combining SIQR (Semi - Inter-Quartile Range) boxplot and Cook's distance method is most suitable for the outlier detection. The optimal regression function is estimated as the TOC(mg/L) = $0.44{\cdot}COD(mg/L)+1.53$, then determination coefficient is showed a value of 0.47 and RMS error is 0.85 mg/L. The RMS error and the variation coefficients of the leverage values are greatly reduced to the 31% and 80% of the value before the outlier removal condition. The method suggested in this study can provide more appropriate regression curve because the excessive impacts of the outlier frequently included in the COD and TOC monitoring data is removed.

Change in Concentrations of Human Norovirus and Male-Specific Coliphage under Various Temperatures, Salinities, and pH Levels in Seawater (해수 중의 수온, 염분 및 pH에 따른 노로바이러스 및 Male-Specific Coliphage 농도변화)

  • Pre- or post-harvest processing is required to mitigate the risk of norovirus infection mediated by shellfish or seafood. We investigated the environmental resistance of human norovirus (HuNoV) under various conditions of temperature, salinity, and pH in seawater. Male-specific coliphage (MSC) was as the reference virus for all tests. At 4℃, HuNoV GII4 spiked into seawater was continually detected by RT-PCR for 35 days, regardless of salinity or pH level. It maintained nearly stable concentrations, meaning HuNoV can sustain a viral population in seawater long enough to be accumulated by shellfish and other filter feeders during winter. MSC was also stable at 4℃ although viral infectivity dropped sharply after 28 days. The effects of salinity and pH on MSC were indistinct. At 25℃ the detectable period of HuNoV GII4 by RT-PCR in seawater decreased to about one-third or half of the period at 4℃. High salinity (32 psu) and alkaline pH (8.5) were also unfavorable for sustaining HuNoV abundance at 25℃ in seawater. The resistance patterns of MSC to high temperature, high salinity, and alkaline pH were more dramatic and viral infectivity decreased over time, almost in direct proportion to experimental days. MSC was undetectable after 12 days under all salinities and pH levels at 25℃.

Spatio- and temporal patterns of benthic environment and macrobenthos community on subtidal soft-bottom in Chonsu Bay, Korea (천수만 조하대 연성저질의 저서환경과 저서동물 군집의 시${\cdot}$공간적 양상)

  • This study was carried out to clarify the spatial and temporal patterns of benthic environments and macrobenthos on the subtidal soft-bottom in Chonsu Bay. Seasonal surface water temperature was similar to the bottom layer, but freshwater discharges into the outlets dereased the surface salinity around the dyke in summer. Bottom dissolved oxygen was decreased deeply around the dyke and created the de-oxygenated layer during summer. Sediment grain size was consisted of finer at the neighboring of the dyke than the mouth of the bay. Organic matters including the sediment were decreased at the mouth of the bay. A total of 311 species ($769\;ind./m^2$) were identified. Polychaetes were the most abundant faunal group in the number of species and densities. The number of species revealed the spatial patterns that it was higher in the mouth of the bay, and their densities showed seasonal changes by mass recruitment occurred at the most of the area in summer, At this time, opportunistic species, Lumbrineris iongifolia and Theora fragilis, were also recruited massively. Chonsu Bay were classified into five station groups by the cluster analysis. The dominant species around the dyke were composed to opportunistic species, those in middle area were Sternaspis scutata, Paraplionospio pinnata, and those in the mouth of the bay were Mediomastus californiensis, Nephtys polybranchia. Seasonal fluctuations and spatial difference of environments seem to have influenced to the species compositions and affected to the stability of benthic ecosystems spatial-temporally In Chonsu nay.

  • Most fishing vessels use an ice cooling system to manage and store captured fish. However, it is difficult to maintain an adequate temperature and salt concentration as well as operating time limitations in ice cooling systems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of flooded-type evaporators for a seawater cooling system to maintain proper seawater temperature in a fish tank. Experiments were conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics by changing the seawater temperature, flow rate, and saturation temperature of the refrigerant. It was confirmed that the heat transfer coefficient of an aluminum-brass tube was approximately 10% higher than that of a copper-nickel tube at the same heat flux. Furthermore, it was confirmed that applying the aluminum-brass tube to the heat transfer tube of a seawater heat exchanger was effective in terms of heat transfer. A comparison of the overall heat transfer coefficient of a single-tube heat exchanger and the flooded-type multi-tube heat exchanger for an 18-kW cooling system showed that the heat transfer coefficient of the single-tube heat exchanger was 25% higher under the same conditions. These results are considered to be important data for designing a flooded-type multi-tube heat exchanger.

Ecological Study on Arbuscular Mycorrhizae(AM) at Coastal Reclaimed Lands (해안(海岸) 간척지(干拓地)에서 Arbuscular Mycorrhizae(AM)에 관한 생태학적(生態學的) 연구(硏究))

  • The symbiotic activities of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF) such as spore density, symbiotic intensity and vesicle density, phytomasses of higher plants such as Calamagrostis epigeios, Imperata cylindria, Artemisia scoparia, Aster tripolium and Sonchus brachyotus and seasonal change of the AMF activities, electric conductivity and zinc contents in plant and soil were determined in the rhizospheres of higher plants at abandoned old coastal reclaimed lands, where constructed in 12 and 30 years ago. If plants of reclaimed land classified to salinity, symbiotic activities of AMF were high in order of obligate halophyte, facultative halophyte and glycophyte. Also, those plants classified to life form, symbiotic activities of AMF were high in order of annual, biennial and perennial plants. Seasonal variation of spore density, one of symbiotic activities showed that the plateau density maintained continuously from the end of growing season of the higher plants to next spring. For this reason, it regarded that reproduction of AMF spore would be formed in autumn, when the higher plants will be developed. Seasonal change of symbiosis intensity, other symbiotic activities, however, showed that the highest symbiosis intensity occurred in spring and summer but the lowest in autumn. In relationships among symbiotic activities, spore density was directry proportional increase of symbiosis intensity. Moreover, phytomass of higher plants also was directly proportional to increase the spore density as well as symbiosis intensity. Vesicle density, however, did not any correlation with the phytomass, spore density and symbiosis intensity. From these results, it can know that both spore density and symbiosis intensity are strongly possible to use as the measure of symbiotic activity owing to symbiosis of tho-AMF, the more absorption of zinc by the higher plants carried out the less concentration of zinc in the soil.
