  • Falling film absorption process is an important problem in application such as absorption chillers. The presence of waves on the film affects the absorption process significantly. In the present study the characteristics of heat and mass transfer in laminar-wavy falling film were studied numerically. The wavy flow behavior was incorporated in the energy and diffusion equation. The numerical solution indicated that the interfacial wave increased the transfer rates remarkably. Interfacial shear stress and wave frequency seemed to be the dominant factors on the film Nusselt number and Sherwood number in the wavy film. A comparison of the transfer rates of the wavy film to that of the smooth film showed that the mass transfer rate could be increased by more than 50%.

  • This paper targets to define controlling factors of pressure-coupled combustion response and estimate their effects on droplet evaporation process. Dynamic characteristics of hydrocarbon propellant vaporization perturbed by acoustic pressure are numerically simulated and analyzed. 1-D droplet model including phase equilibrium between two phases is applied and acoustic wave is expressed by harmonic function. Effects of various design factors and acoustic pressure on combustion response are investigated with parametric studies. Results show that driving frequency of acoustic perturbation and ambient pressure have important roles in determining magnitude and phase of combustion response. On the other hand, other parameters such as gas temperature, initial droplet size and temperature, and amplitude of acoustic wave cause only minor changes to magnitude of combustion response. Resultant changes in phase of heat of vaporization and thermal wave in droplet highly influence magnitude and phase of combustion response.

  • Number of long-span bridge construction has been increased recently so that seismic consideration of design has become significant. To adapt such significance to design, seismic design in the newly revised 'Cable Steel Bridge Design Handbook' specifies some of wave travelling effect and local site effect. In this study, a cable-stayed bridge with main span of 500m is analysed having variables of uniform excitation, wave travelling effect, and wave travelling effect plus local site effect. Result shows that wave travelling effect in cable-stayed bridge affects considerably to its seismic response under weak soil condition even though the span length is relatively short. What's more, regardless of soil type, the seismic response has become higher for analysis with wave travelling effect and local site effect than with wave travelling effect only. Consequently, in seismic response analysis of long-span bridge, consideration should be given to application of wave travelling effect and local site effect.

  • This paper is concerned with protecting piezoelectric transducers used in an ultrasonic flowmeter from the high temperature of hot fluid in a pipe by using a waveguide and with improving the propagation of ultrasonic longitudinal vibration in the waveguide. Waveguide material has been chosen for efficient insulation of heat transferred in the waveguide, and the minimum length of the waveguide for protecting piezoelectric transducer has been estimated. Forced response of the longitudinal vibration in a uniform circular rod has been obtained and the length of the waveguide has been selected for maximum amplitude. Longitudinal vibration response of a conically-tapered rod excited at a natural frequency has been obtained to confirm that wave motion is amplified as the cross-sectional size of the waveguide decreases along the axial direction. The fact that dispersion of a pulse wave in a waveguide is reduced as the cross-sectional radius is decreased has been examined theoretically and confirmed experimentally by using a single-rod waveguide. A bundle-type waveguide has proven to be a practical one through the evaluation of the wave propagation performance.

  • In this paper we present sub-50 pm resolution images of atom columns simulated with the negative of the second derivative of the exit-plane wave function (EPW). The EPW can be retrieved from a focal series reconstruction in the (high resolution) transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The simulated images are for Si and InAs in [114] and [116] orientations, which give about sub-50 pm separations of atom columns. The theoretical reason for the validity of this method is given from analysis based on the kinematical diffraction theory, and the limitation for applicability of this method also is discussed.

  • The numerical analysis on the wave screening performance of the submerged breakwater with various crown widths is presented. The fluid motion is considered as linearized two dimensional potential flow and the finite element method is used to analyze the wave screening performance of the submerged breakwater. It is found that single-submerged breakwater with large crown width shows the most effective wave screening performance and single-submerged breakwater with small crown width also shows fairly good wave screening performance but its effectiveness is less than that of single-submerged breakwater with large crown width. However, double- or triple-submerged breakwater with small crown width shows more effective wave screening performance than that of single- or double-submerged breakwater with large crown width. It is expected that the submerged breakwater with small crown width is economical because it reduces the size of structure.
