  • An absorber is a major component in the absorption refrigeration systems and its performance greatly affects the overall system performance. In this study, experimental analyses on heat transfer characteristics for removal of absorption heat in ammonia-water bubble mode absorber were performed. Heat transfer coefficients were estimated as the variations of input gas flow rate, solution flow rate, temperature, concentration, absorber diameter and height, and input flow direction. The increase of gas and solution flow rate affects positively in heat transfer. However, the increase of solution temperature and concentration affects negatively. Moreover, under the same Reynolds Numbers, countercurrent flow is superior to cocurrent flow in heat transfer performance. In addition, from these experimental data, empirical correlations which can explain easily the characteristics of heat transfer are derived.

  • This Study was conducted to predict temperature profile of Jangjorim (boiled beef in soy sauce) food during retorting using the commercial NISA (Numerical Integrated Elements for System Analysis) program. NISA program is a good tool to simulate the temperature profile of a specific material based upon the finite element method. The cold point of Jangjorim food located not at the geometrical center but at 26.9 mm backward in y plane because specific heat of soy sauce was 20% higher than that of boiled beef. The effects of heat transfer coefficients on heat transfer during retorting process of Jangjorim were analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM). Independent variables were thermal conductivity of soy sauce, thermal conductivity of boiled beef, and convection heat transfer coefficient and dependent variables were temperature error and lethality error. Thermal conductivity of soy sauce was the most significant contributor among those (P<0.01).

  • The temperature distribution and heat flux of the inner wall of the cylinder of turbocharged gasoline engine were calculated by the 3-dimensional heat conduction analysis employing boundary element method. Overall mean effective heat transfer coefficient and thermal resistance ratio and equivalent thickness of the cylinder wall were calculated. the numerical results were discussed with respect to the engine speed, equivalence ratio, spark and boost pressure.

  • Thermal behavior of high capacity Nickel/Metal hybride battery in analyzed using the NISA software which is based on the three dimensional finite element method. Differential energy balance equation is used for the conduction heat transfer of the battery, while convective heat transfer equation is used for the interface between the battery and air. Heat generation rate and convective heat transfer coefficient are tested as variables to investigate thermal behavior, and the generalized equation for maximum temperature inside the battery is developed. The abrupt rise of the battery temperature due to the quick charge or discharge can be prevented from the use of metallic cooling fin. In addition, temperature augmentation of the battery is negligible when the low thermal conductive and thin insulating material is used outside of the battery case.

  • The stress condition mainly dominates the thermal conductivity of soils whereas governing factors such as unit weight and porosity suggested by empirical correlations are still valid. The 3D thermal network model enables evaluation of the stress-dependent thermal conductivity of particulate materials generated by discrete element method (DEM). The relationship among dominant factors is analyzed based on the coordination number and porosity determined by stress condition and thermal conductivity of pore fluid. Results show that the variation of thermal conductivity is strongly attributed to the enlargement of inter-particle contact area by loading history and pore fluid conductivity. This study highlights that the anisotropic evolution of thermal conductivity depends on the directional load and that the particle-scale mechanism mainly dictates the heat transfer in soils.

  • Radiation heat transfer was calculated for initial stage of crystal growth in Czochralski crystal growth system. View factors among surface elements were calculated for the estimation of heat evolution and all the surfaces were assumed to be diffuse-gray. The values of view factors were greatly different along the position of surface elements. The dissipated amounts of heat flux from the melt surface were 3.6 times larger than those from the crystal surface at the initial stage of crystal growth and this amounts were greater when the surface elements were not considered. The trijunction part of the crystal was greatly affected by the melt surface near the crystal. Consequently radiation heat transfer between surface elements must be considered in order to correctly simulate the initial crystal growth.

  • The purpose of this research it to develop gas-air rotary heat exchanger using heat pipe and the performances were examined by way of the theoretical analysis and the experiment. Centrifugal force to return the working fluid in heat pipe elements with different radius was evaluated as a function of the revolution speed and inclination angle, and a rotary heat exchanger with 60 heat pipes in 3 rows was designed and manufactured. The inclination angle of a heat pipe relative to the revolving axis was designed to be 2$^{\circ}$and water was used as a working fluid. Experimental result showed the heat exchange rate was enhanced by 16% with compared to the calculated value.

  • Effects of oscillatory flow upon heat transfer characteristics have been studied experimentally for oscillating flow in a circular tube. The experimental apparatus was designed to simulate the heat exchangers of the Stirling or Vuilleumier cycle machines and the test section consists of heater and cooler. Measurements were presented of heat flux, axial wall temperature distribution, and radial temperature profile of the working fluid for several cases of oscillation frequency and swept distance ratio. The influences of two main parameters, frequency and tidal displacement of the oscillation were investigated. Then the heat transfer coefficient at the heater is obtained. The carried by the authors with a assumption of oscillatory laminar slug flow.
