Statistical evaluation for the heat transfer correlation in the containment subcompartments is carried out from HDR experimental data. Heat transfer data for three HDR blowdown tests, V.42, V.43 and V.44, are analyzed to deduce the correlation. As Uchida already proposed, air-to-steam density ratio is proven to be the most affecting parameter in this study. Here Uchida heat transfer correlation is revised by including temperature difference between the atmosphere and the wall surface, and atmospheric pressure. In addition to these dependencies, atmospheric turbulence and time factor may be included in the model. This implication, however, is not successful, because turbulence and transient phenomena were not adequately quantified in the HDR program. It is concluded that a strong correlation exists between the heat transfer coefficient and temperature differences, specially for forced circulation conditions.

An analysis on the thermal instability of horizontal Blasius flow in the form of longitudinal vortices has been carried out by introducing the 3-dimensional spatial dependence of the disturbance quantities. The stability problem has been simplified significantly by considering the limiting case of infinite Prandtl number and by skilfully replacing the boundary conditions at infinity with the interface conditions at the edge of the thermal boundary layer (or by simply confining the thermal disturbances in the thermal boundary layer). The advantage of this approach is that the critical values marking the onset of thermal instability can be readily obtained as solutions of the eigenvalues problems formulated by a 6*6(or a 5*5) determinant. Present analysis provides reasonable explanations on the existing experimental and theoretical data. Especially, the heat transfer correlation based on the present analysis agrees well with the existing experimental data.

In this study, turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics in a helically coiled tube have been numerically investigated. Helically coiled tubes are commonly used in heat exchange systems to enhance the heat transfer rate. Accordingly, they have been widely studied experimentally; however, most studies have focused on the pressure drop and heat transfer correlations. The centrifugal force caused by a helical tube increases the wall shear stress and heat transfer rate on the outer side of the helical tube while decreasing those on the inner side of the tube. Therefore, this study quantitatively shows the variation of the local Nusselt number and friction factor along the circumference at the wall of a helical tube by varying the coil diameter and Reynolds number. It is seen that the local heat transfer rate and wall shear stress greatly decrease near the inner side of the tube, which can affect the safety of the tube materials. Moreover, this study verifies the previous experimental correlations for the friction factor and Nusselt number, and it shows that the correlation between the two in a straight tube can be applied to a helical tube. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as important data for the safety evaluation of heat exchangers and steam generators.
This study was conducted to suggest a model to calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient of single layer covering for various greenhouse conditions. There was a strong correlation between cover surface temperature and inside air temperature of greenhouse. The equations to calculate the convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients proposed by Kittas were best fitted for calculation of the overall heat transfer coefficient. Because the coefficient of linear regression between the calculated and measured cover surface temperature was founded to 0.98, the slope of the straight line is 1.009 and the intercept is 0.001, the calculation model of overall heat transfer coefficient proposed by this study is acceptable. The convective heat transfer between the inner cover surface and the inside air was greater than the radiative heat transfer, and the difference increased as the wind speed rose. The convective heat transfer between the outer cover surface and the outside air was less than the radiative heat transfer for the low wind speed, but greater than for the high wind speed. The outer cover convective heat flux increased proportion to the inner cover convective heat flux linearly. The overall heat transfer coefficient increased but the cover surface temperature decreased as the wind speed increased, and the regression function was founded to be logarithmic and power function, respectively.

Asphalt pavement accounts for more than 90% of the total pavement in Korea. Pavement is most widely constructed among construction structures. The heat transfer characteristics (Thermophysical Properties) of the asphalt pavement cause the heat island effect in downtown areas. An increasing asphalt surface temperature is one of the major causes of damage to asphalt pavement. This study examined the heat transfer characteristic factors according to solar energy accumulation in an asphalt mixture. The specimens (WC-2 & PA-13, Recycled aggregate used WC-2) used in the experiment were compacted with a Gyratory Compactor. The thermo-physical properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal emissivity) and solar energy accumulation were evaluated. The thermal accumulation and HFM tests revealed a 1.2- to 2.0-fold difference. This indicates that the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture pavement changes with the accumulation of solar energy. An analysis of the correlation of thermal conductivity according to the surface temperature of the asphalt mixture showed that WC-2 was logarithmic, and PA-13 was linear. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics of asphalt pavement that can be used for thermal failure modeling of asphalt were conducted.
An absorber is a major component in the absorption refrigeration systems and its performance greatly affects the overall system performance. In this study, experimental analyses on heat transfer characteristics for removal of absorption heat in ammonia-water bubble mode absorber were performed. Heat transfer coefficients were estimated as the variations of input gas flow rate, solution flow rate, temperature, concentration, absorber diameter and height, and input flow direction. The increase of gas and solution flow rate affects positively in heat transfer. However, the increase of solution temperature and concentration affects negatively. Moreover, under the same Reynolds Numbers, countercurrent flow is superior to cocurrent flow in heat transfer performance. In addition, from these experimental data, empirical correlations which can explain easily the characteristics of heat transfer are derived.
In this study, the relations of the wall thermal conductivity and surface temperature in a compartment fire are investigated using Buckingham Pi theorem. The dimensionless parameters of the previous study are analyzed in order to correlate the dimensionless groups of the heat release rate, the thermal conductivity, the volume of compartment and the convective heat transfer coefficient. In addition the reduced scale of compartment, which has 1/6 size of ISO 9705 Room Corner Tester, is manufactured and the oxygen concentration and the maximum temperature in the space are measured for the gasoline pool fire ($10cm{\times}10cm$, $15cm{\times}15cm$ and $20cm{\times}20cm$). Finally, the criterion of the wall temperature increase are suggested in accordance with the thermal conductivity and the convective heat transfer coefficient. In addition, the dimensionless empirical equation using Buckingham Pi theorem considering the heat release rate are presented suggested. The results of this study will be useful especially for the fire phenomenon investigation of the wall thermal conductivity coefficient and shape in the compartment space.
