  • Weeds may compete detrimentally with the ginseng for moisture and nutrients but hand weeding is the only practical means of eliminating weeds after crop establishment. To define the effects of 2, 4-D herbicide application on the plant growth and root yield of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). the herbicide 2, 4-D was applied as a foliar spray with the rates of 0.5. 1.0. 1.5 and 2.0 times of the recommended herbicide dosage 70ml/l0a. The Korean ginseng treated with 2, 4-D in the rate of two times concentration was indistinguishable from nontreated plants in visual rating for foliar symptoms. There were no significant differences of the leaf length and width as well as the stem length and diameter in check plants and those recieving 2, 4-D treatments. The. berry maturing in 3 and 4-years old ginseng was not inhibited with 2, 4-D treatment. The root weight of the 4-years old ginseng plant was not reduced by 2, 4-D application of 2 times dosage. However. when the ginseng seedling was treated with 2, 4-D. detrimental phenomena as stem bending and dicoloration of marginal part of seedling leaf were occured but stem bending was recovered in a few days.

  • The integrity of the turbine rotors can be assessed by measuring the material properties at service temperature. In order to evaluate the remanent life of turbine rotor steel nondestructively, a measurement system of reversible magnetic permeability using an alternating perturbing magnetic field was constructed. We present a new non-destructive method to evaluate the remanent life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel using the value of reversible magnetic permeability. This method is based on the existence of reversible magnetic permeability in the differential magnetization around the coercive field strength. We measured the first harmonics voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to an exciting frequency. The Results of reversible magnetic Permeability and Wickers hardness on the aged samples show that the peak interval of reversible magnetic permeability (PIRMP) and Vickers hardness decreases as aging time increases. A softening curve is obtained from the correlation between Vickers hardness and the PIRMP. This curve can be used as a non-destructive method to evaluate the remanent life of turbine rotor steel.

  • Changes of cell wall components and softening enzyme during the preparation of persimmon pickles with soy sauce and soy paste were investigated. The contents of alcohol insoluble substance and cell wall extracted from persimmon pickles in soy sauce and soy paste were gradually decreased to the 20th day of storage and then decreased rapidly, but the contents of water soluble material extracted from persimmon pickles in soy sauce and soy paste was increased during the storage time $(0{\sim}50\;days)$. The contents of lignin, pectin and acid-soluble hemicellulose of persimmon pickles in soy sauce and soy paste were decreased during the storage, but contents of alkali-soluble hemicellulose was increased. The contents of cellulose almost did not change during storage of pickles. The hardness of persimmon pickles in soy sauce and soy paste was gradually increased up to the 30th day of storage and then decreased. The activities of polygalacturonase and pectinesterase as softening enzyme in persimmon pickles with soy sauce and soy paste increased during storage. And ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activity was slightly increased to the 30th day of storage and after increased rapidly.

  • The yellowing is always occurred phenomena in epoxy restoration material of antic-ceramics. For re-restoration of remains with epoxy restoration material, the epoxy elimination step is the first one in all course of restoration In this paper, the chemically elimination treatments methods of epoxy in various antic-ceramics were discussed. We fabricated the epoxy elimination material for antic-ceramics restoration which were made up Dichloromethane and Dichlormethane based Dimethylformamide solution. Dichloromethane and Dichloromethane + Dimethylformamide mixture were applied to epoxy in various antic-ceramic sample. Particularly, Dichloromethane + Dimethylformamide solution had the best result in variation of color change, gloss, vending strength, weight, exfoliation time test after deposition in this solution. Dichloromrthane had the volume increase characteristics for epoxy material and Dimethylformamide had the mollification ones. So, Dichloromathane increased exfoliation in approximal surface of the epoxy material and antic ceramic, and Dimethylformamide decreased the surface hardness of epoxy. In this result, epoxy material even inside of ceramic that have very weak inside bonding is adaptable and stable eliminated. And in order to show the perfect elimination of this material, we successfully dissolve the epoxy restoration material in one antic pottery that is in one university museum's possession using this mixture. So, there is guarantee in the eternity and stabilization of restoration for antic-ceramics.

  • Preparation method and characteristics of high quality Korean pickled cucumber made with acetic acid-treated cuttle bone powder (KPCCP) were examined and compared to those of Korean pickled cucumber prepared by traditional methods (control). Optimal concentration of acetic acid-treated cuttle bone powder for KPCCP preparation was revealed as 10%. Salt concentration of KPCCP fermented for 3 days was 4.5%, slightly higher than that of the control, whereas that of KPCCP fermented for over 6 day was about 4.8%, similar to that of the control. The pH, greenness, and hardness of korean pickled cucumber decreased during fermentation, with the control showing a greater extent of decrease than KPCCP Total acidity and alcohol insoluble calcium contents increased during fermentation, with KPCCP showing higher extent of increase. These results indicate that quality of KPCCP is superior to that of Korean pickled cucumber prepared by traditional methods.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum storage temperature and the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the postharvest physiology and quality of plumcot (Prunus salicina Lindle. ${\times}$ Prunus armeniaca L.) 'Harmony' fruits. plumcot fruits were stored at 0, 5, 10, and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, with three different ripeness stages grouped by skin color development. Furthermore, we treated $1{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP was treated at $10^{\circ}C$ for 17 hours and stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for 12 days to evaluate the effectiveness for better shelf-life. The results indicated that lower storage temperature than room temperature effectively reduced the respiration rate with delaying quality changes. While, the fruits showed worse fruit taste than the fruits stored at 10 and $20^{\circ}C$. Reversely, the fruits stored at $20^{\circ}C$ showed more respiration rate and ethylene production. 1-MCP treatment effectively reduced the skin red color development, ethylene production, $CO_2$ and softening of plumcot 'Harmony' fruits. Overall data indicated that the optimum harvest time and storage temperature could be 30-50% red color and near $10^{\circ}C$. Postharvest 1-MCP application at the level of $1.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ could maintain fruit quality well in plumcot fruits.

  • In this paper, Gilt-bronze Standing Avaolkiteshvara (National Treasure No. 293, M355) excavated at Gyuam-ri in Buyeo was observed with a microscope to identify the production technique applied to it. It was also analyzed with XRF and hard X-ray to identify the composition and the surface treatment techniques and casting method applied. In this statue, Avalokiteshvara is standing upright on a lotus pedestal. The lotus designs on the pedestal and those on the shawl flowing down on both sides of the statue are characteristic of Buddhist statues from the seventh century or later. The use of supports to affix the outer and inner molds and traces of injected cast were observed in the interior of the pedestal. The blisters on the arms and pedestal created during the bronze casting indicate the use of lost-wax casting, which was popularly employed for the production of mid- or small-sized gilt-bronze Buddhist statues in ancient times. The composition analysis identified a copper-tin-lead ternary alloy in the interior of the statue that was conventional used in the sixth and seventh centuries. It is likely that this simple alloy was used to facilitate casting and produce clearer expressions of designs and ornaments on the statue. Mercury (Hg) was detected on the surface of the statue, indicating the use of amalgam-plating with gold (Au) dissolved in mercury. This plating method is a common surface treatment technique used for small gilt-bronze statutes in ancient Korea.

  • We investigated the changes of free amino acid, ATP related compounds and sensory evaluation during ripening of dry or brine salted-anchovy. The total free amino acid content of the salted-anchovy ripened at $20^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of the salted-anchovy ripened at $5^{\circ}C.$ The IMP content of raw anchovy was higher than that of any other ATP related compound and decreased rapidly during ripening, resulting in increased hypoxanthin (Hx). The sensory evaluation results indicated 5 and 4 months for dry and brine salted-anchovy, respectively, as the minimum time required to obtain an adequate ripened salted-anchovy. We concluded that processing condition of ripened salted-anchovy was to ripened for 5 months at $5^{\circ}C$ by drying salting method.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between linear and volumetric measurements of apical dye penetration in canals obturated by various kinds of methods. The canals of 108 roots without crown were conventionally prepared and randomly assigned to four group. The canals of group I a2 were obturated by lateral condensation with sealer, group II a2 by thermoplasticized low-temperature ($70^{\circ}C$) gutta-percha with sealer, group III by Thermafil endodntic obturation with sealer and group IV by injection-molded thermop-lasticized guttapercha One mm of root apex was exposed to a 2 % methylene blue solution at $7^{\circ}C$or 10 days, and the quality of apical seals was assessed by measuring the leakage linearly and volumetrically. The obtained results were as follows: In linear measurements, group II showed significanty less leakage than group III, I and group III also showed less than group N, but no statistically significant difference was demonstrated between the others. In volumetric measurements, group II showed significantly less leakage than group I and II, and no significant differnce from group III. There was a weak significant correlation between the linear measurement and the volumetric measurement(r=0.3391, P<0.001).
