  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of seed disinfectant on leaf blight and smut in adlay. Leaf blight and smut disease in adlay are known to be seed borne. Bjpolan's cojds, pathogen causing leaf blight in adlay, was detected from 32. 7 to 45. 7 % on seeds collected from adlay cultivated farms in Yonchon province. Periods of seed infestation are $0{\sim}7$ days on the variety 'yulmu 1' and $0{\sim}20$ days on 'Yonchon jaerae'. Distribution ratio of seed disinfestation periods was that no disinfestation, $1{\sim}5$days, $6{\sim}10$days and more 11days were 20%, 20%, 45% and 15%, respectively. Frudioxonil W. S. treatment was effective on inhibition of leaf blight and smut disease when treated with infested seeds ; that is, disease control values of the fungicide are 97 and 93.4 percentage, repectively.

  • We estimated the provenance of the obsidian artifacts from Samgeori site at Yeoncheon, one of the prehistoric sites in South Korea. Pyroxene microlites are of hedenbergite to augite compositions, and intergrown and/or overgrown with Fe-oxides showing poikilitic texture. Major oxides contents for the matrix of the obsidian artifacts exhibit a narrow compositional range, especially SiO2 contents being 73.0~75.5 wt.% of acidic rhyolitic composition. Also, rare earth element (REE) contents are relatively constant in the obsidian artifacts, and the chondrite-normalized REE patterns show a strong Eu negative anomaly. These mineralogical and geochemical features of the Samgeori obsidian artifacts were compared with those from both the Baekdusan obsidians and Japanese Kyushu obsidians which have been thought to be two major obsidian provenances around South Korea. It is suggested that the Samgeori obsidian artifacts were possibly originated from the Baekdusan obsidians.

  • The heavy strom of July 26-28, 1996, which occurred over the Northern Kyungi Province and Western Kangwon Province, is analyzed to investigate the hydrometeorological characteristics and frequency of occurrences of the storm. The study region is limited to the watershed area of Hantan River on which the partially destructed Yeonchon Dam is located. Hourly rainfall data at 21 rain gauging stations in and near the Hantan river basin are collected and the cumulative rainfall mass curves constructed and compared each other to judge the credibility and consistency of rainfall data at nearby stations. In order to analyze the spatially moving characteristics of rain storm the isochrones based on real time are constructed using the several fixed-percentage cumulative rainfalls at the stations. The basin average rainfalls of various durations are computed for Yeonchon dam and the return period of July/1996 storm are evaluated based on the rainfall frequency curves at Cheolwon and Yeonchon rain gauging stations. A comparison is also made between the July/1996 storm and PMP of the region, which demonstrated the severity of the heavy storm.

  • Hong-sii Tokso-rok (홍씨독서록 or Hong's Annotated Bibliography of Korean and Chinise Book) is the only work on the history of Korean bibliographies that has the introductory notes to each class, that is description of the origin of subject fields, transition, and characteristics at the beginning of each class. This paper is aimed to examine the outline of the introductory description of class, to analyze the Four Category Classification System(사부분류법) devised by Hong Sok-chu, and to explain how the classes of Four Category Classification are set and ordered. This paper shows several characteristics in the idea of Hong's classification system. There characteristics were discovered by analyzing the content of each introduction of classes. The characteristics ale as follows First, classes are organize and arranged from the substantial problem to nonsubstantial ones. In other words, the greater the distance of the class from the substantial problem of Confucianism, the farther the order of the class will be found from the substantial problem. The order of classes is set by how the class is closed to the substantial problem in the same hierarchy. This principle is strictly applied to the Hong's classification system. Second, on the basis of democratic thought, he del·eloped the classification system. In other words, when he set up the priority of classes, he put emphasis on the democratism as a guideline. The organization of classes belong to the catagories of history (Sa-bu, 사부) and philosophy(Cha-bu, 자부) showed the application of this principle. Conclusively, this paper found that Hong did not randomly arrange the class older, but he set the class order with objective reasons and logic when he set the class order of arrangement.
