  • To clarify the spatial distribution pattern of macrozoobenthos in Korean coastal waters in the summer season and investigate the relationship between community structure and benthic environmental factors, field surveys on community structure and benthic environmental factors were conducted at 117 stations in August 2017. A total of 613 macrobenthic species were identified, with the mean density of 1,228 ind./m2 and the mean biomass (wet weight) of 110.9 g WW/m2. Rich biodiversity was found at stations near Wando and along the coast of the East Sea, and there is a trend that stations with greater biodiversity also showed higher mean density as well. The dominant species in all the coastal areas in Korea was Heteromastus filiformis, which were found at most of the stations during the survey. The relatively deep areas in the East Sea were dominated by Magelona johnsoni and Maldane cristata, which were the third and ninth dominant species in the study areas, respectively. Pseudopolydora kempi and Rhynchospio sp. were observed only at the station located in the Nakdong River estuary. From the cluster analysis the stations could be clustered into three station groups with more similar faunal composition. Group A was located in the eastern coast, characterized with deep water depth and low levels of sand contents, while Group B was located in the southern coast, characterized by shallow depth of water and high content of mud and organic matter. Lastly, Group C was in the western coast, demonstrating low levels of mud content and organic matters. The biodiversity of macrobenthic species in the study area showed high positive correlation coefficients with benthic environmental factors such as sorting, clay, silt, and contents of organic matter in sediments, but negatively correlated with the sand contents. Major dominant species, Theora lata and Eriopisella sechellensis, both showed negative correlation coefficients with the sand contents, but a relatively high positive correlation with the levels of organic contents. It can be concluded that the spatial distribution patterns of macrobenthic organisms in Korean coastal waters are affected by depth, sediment type, and contents of organic matters.

  • Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, As and Cd) in surface sediments from 96 sites in Masan and Jinhae Bay were studied in order to understand metal contamination. Results show that the surface sediments were mainly enriched by Cu (18-294 ppm), Zn (67-568 ppm), Pb (10-120 ppm) and Cd (0.2-3.5 ppm). The coastal zone of Masan Bay was significantly more contaminated than the non-coastal zone, and spatial distribution pattern suggested additional sources of heavy metal input in the coastal area. The enrichment ratio and geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$) have been calculated and the relative contamination levels assessed in the study area. The enrichment ratios of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in Masan Bay have been observed to be relatively high. $I_{geo}$ results reveal that the study area is not contaminated with respect to Fe, Mn, Cr and Ni; moderately to strongly contaminated with Cu, Zn and Pb; and strongly to strong contaminated with Cd. The high contents of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in the study area result from anthropogenic activities in the catchment area. Based on the eight different sediment quality guideline values from USA (ERL, ERM), Canada (TEL, PEL), Australia/New Zealand (ISQG-high, ISQG-low) and Hong Kong (ISQV-low, ISQV-high), sediment quality of Masan and Jinhae Bay was also assessed and characterized.

  • We analyzed the ocean environmental data from water sample and automatic measurement instruments with the Incheon-Jeju passenger ship for 18 times during 4 years from 2001 to 2004. The objectives of this study are to monitor the spatial and temporal variations of ocean environmental parameters in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea using water sample analysis, and to compare and analyze the reliability of automatic measurement sensors for chlorophyll and turbidity using in situ measurements. The chlorophyll concentration showed the ranges between 0.1 to $6.0mg/m^3$. High concentrations occurred in the Gyeonggi Bay through all the cruises. The maximum value of chlorophyll concentration was $16.5mg/m^3$ in this area during September 2004. The absorption coefficients of dissolve organic matter at 400 nm showed below $0.5m^{-1}$ except those in August 2001 During 2002-2003, it did not distinctly change the seasonal variations with the ranges 0.1 to $0.4m^{-1}$. In the case of suspended sediment (SS) concentration, most of the area showed below $20g/m^3$ through all seasons except the Gyeonggi Bay and around Mokpo area. In general SS concentration of autumn and winter season was higher than that of summer. The central area of the Yellow Sea appeared to have lower value $10g/m^3$. The YSI fluorometer for chlorophyll concentration had a very low reliability and turbidity sensor had a $R^2$ value of 0.77 through the 4 times measurements comparing with water sampling method. For the automatic measurement using instruments for chlorphlyll and suspended sediment concentration, McVan and Choses sensor was greater than YSI multisensor. The SeaWiFS SS distribution map was well spatially matched with in situ measurement, however, there was a little difference in quantitative concentration.

  • We investigated geochemical constituents of pore-water and sediment, rates of organic carbon (Corg) oxidation and sulfate reduction (SR), and benthic nutrient flux (BNF) to elucidate characteristic of Corg oxidation and its control in the coastal area near Lake Shihwa. The study sites were selected in the vicinity of Soraepogu (E0), Songdo tidalflat (E1) and Oido dock (E3) and in front of floodgate Shihwa tidal plant (E5). The Corg contents in the sediments and concentrations of ammonium and phosphate in pore water exhibited the highest value at EO, and gradually decreased toward the outer sea (E1, E3, E5). Rates of anaerobic Corg oxidation (260.6 mmol C m-2 d-1) and SR (91.4 mmol S m-2 d-1) at E0 were 4-9 and 6-54 times higher than at the site of outer sea (E1, E3, E5). Rates of SR at E3 and E5 accounted for 11-23% of anaerobic Corg oxidation, whereas it comprised 47-70% of anaerobic Corg oxidation at E0 and E1. Rates of Corg oxidation and SR showed a highly positive correlation with the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (r2 = 0.795 and 0.777, respectively). The BNF at E0, E1, and E3 accounted for 120-510% and 26-178%, respectively, of the N and P required for primary production in the water column. Overall results suggest that the Corg oxidation in the sediment controlled by concentration of dissolved organic carbon in the pore water and the excessive Corg oxidation stimulates the benthic nutrient flux, which may cause a phytoplankton bloom in the water column.

  • In this study, we investigated the macrobenthic community structure and spatiotemporal variations in Uljin Marine Ranching area, East Sea of Korea. Macrobenthos were collected using a modified van Veen grab sampler from April to September 2013. Total number of species sampled was 345 and mean density was 5,797 ind. $m^{-2}$, both of which were dominated by the polychaetes. The most dominant species were Spiophanes bombyx (53.64%), followed by Magelona sp.1 (6.96%), Cadella semitorta (2.73%), Lumbrineris longifolia (2.16%) and Alvenius ojianus (2.08%). Cluster analysis and nMDS ordination analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity identified 2 station groups. The group 1 (station 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9) was characterized by high abundance of the polychaetes Magelona sp.1, Lumbrineris longifolia, Scoloplos armiger, Praxillella affinis, Maldane cristata and the bivalve Alvenius ojianus, with fine sediment above 30m water depth. On the other hand, the group 2 (station 1, 4, 7 and 10) was numerically dominated by the polychaete Lumbrineriopsis sp. and the bivalve Cadella semitorta, with coarse sediment below 5m water depth. Collectively, the macrobenthic community structure showed a distinct spatial trend, which seemed to be related to the water depth and sediment composition.

  • Seasonal species composition of fishery resources was determined using samples collected by a stow net from April 1995 through January 1996 at 9 stations off Youngkwang. Catch data obtained from a set net using strong tidal current could be used for a quantitative analysis of dominant species. Of the 98 species identified, assemblages were consisted of $52.0\%$ in fishes, $44.6\%$ in shrimps, $2.0\%$ in cephalopods, $1.4\%$ in crabs and <$0.1\%$ in gastropods. Thryssa kammalensis, Crangon hakodatei, Metapenaeus joynezi and Johnius grypotus predominated in abundance, consisting of $68\%$ in the number of individuals, The abundance and species composition fluctuated seasonally, and species could be distinguished by life history pattern with seasons. Seasonal variation in species composition was greater than the spatial variation in a sampling period, As the fine sediment was predominated in the study area, the species composition were significantly different from those of other coastal waters of West Sea, Korea.

  • Bedform morphology of the giant ripples have been studied on the continental shelf of the Yellow Sea, East China sea and Korea-Tsushima Strait on the basis of side-scan sonar image, sub-bottom profile, sedimentary facies, geomorphology evidence and hydrology. There are well developed giant ripples ranging from 100 to 500 m in wavelengths and from 2 to 10 m in wave height at nine sites in the study area, which are covered by medium to fine sand. Most of them have been formed under the present hydrologic regime where the tidal currents and local currents or turbulence flows are superimposed. In the study area, giant ripples are produced on two different environments. One is at the geomorphic narrow zone such as the Korea Strait where currents are accelerated by the topographic effects, while the other is the sandy flat plain where tidal currents and local currents are harmonized.

  • The data of Secchi disc observation collected during $1966\~1990$ were analyzed to investigate the seasonal variation of transparency in the southeastern Yellow Sea. The bimonthly distribution of mean transparency showed that the isolines of transparency were roughly parallel to the isobaths. The transparency was low (3 m in february and 8 m in August) if the shallow water less than 20 m depth in comparition to the higher values (10 m in february and 17 m in August) in the deeper water. The lowest transparency was found in winter. The transparency increased in spring and the highest transparency occurred in summer. The water becomes turbid in autumn. Suspended solid concentrations in winter are ranged from 28 to 130 $mg/{\ell}$, and from 8 to 60 $mg/{\ell}$ in summer. The seasonal variation of transparency seems to be mainly affected by resuspension of solid from the bottom. The amounts of suspended solid are large in winter due to the vertical convection by cooling effect and tubulence by the strong wind, and small in summer due to the strong stratification and weak wind.

  • Measurements of bottom backscattering strengths in a frequency range of 6-14 kHz were made on the shallow water off the southern Gyeonggi Bay in Yellow Sea in May 2013, as part of the KIOST-HYU joint acoustics experiment. Geological surveys for the experimental area were performed using multi-beam echo sounder, sparker system, and grab sampling to investigate the bottom topography, sub-bottom profile and composition of surficial sediment, respectively. In this paper, the backscattering strengths as a function of grazing angle (in range of $28^{\circ}{\sim}69^{\circ}$) were estimated and compared to the predictions obtained by Lambert's law and APL-UW scattering model. Finally, the effects of geoacoustic parameters corresponding to the experimental area on the backscattering strengths are discussed.

  • Due to floating marine debris, seabed litters, dead shellfishes and polluted sediments, etc. , which are mainly caused by fishery activities in a large scale around the coastline, expansion of industrialized areas from economic development and drastic increase of free time by the improved standard of living, Korean coast is believed to be cast beyond the self purification of marine ecosystem. Seabed litters, if not remedied in a timely manner, will eventually lead to the overall disorder of benthic ecosystem. Thus, in order to prevent marine ecosystem from being thrown into confusion by seabed litters and to restore ocean environments, it is reasonable to investigate the current status of the seabed litters by carrying out an extensive examination on them and to equip ourselves for marine debris with an systemized tool that provides supports to the building process of an efficient methodology of litters disposal through managing related data appropriately. As an primary step to this goal, a systematic method of investigation is presented in this paper. With this methodology, the present state of the seabed titters is properly understood for the specified list of ports.
