  • The widened Seoul-Bridge is the first continuous 8-span prestressed concrete(PSC) girder bridge in domain. The construction sequence of the bridge consists of S steps in a large way. The measuring in construction stage includes the determination of the allowable fluctuation value of beam stress in each step and the measurement beam stress during prestessing. The measured tendon prestress force was compared with the design value. When it was compared with the analytic result, the difference between the measured stress and the analytic stress was below allowable error. The friction loss and the anchorage slip loss of the tendon prestress force was lower than the design loss value.

  • After the 1990's, Guss asphalt has chosen in Korea for using in pavement of a steel deck bridge because of it's distinguish ability about water proof and so on. But on the other hand it may cause server stress and displacement on the bridge as it is treated using very high temperature ranging from 220℃ to 260℃. Therefore it is critical to estimate the thermal effect of Guss asphalt on the steel deck bridge before the width and pattern of the unit portion are decided to minimize impact. In this study, a serious of numerical tests of the some steel box bridges were idealized were conducted to verify the feasibility of numerical value analysis. The parametric study was performed to present design proposal about the Box section dimensions and the diaphragm spacing.

  • To eliminate deck joints, continuous span bridges are becoming an attractive option. Defferent continuty methods and construction sequences have different time-dependent effects on the behavior of the bridge system. This paper is carried out to evaluate the restraint moments generated at interior span of bridges constructed with full-span prestessed concrete bridge. Especially, effects of creep and shrinkage between ACI209-95 and Eurocode 2 are compared in this paper. Time-dependent effects in prestressed concrete bridges include creep and shrinkage of concrete. Creep due to prestress makes the girders camber up and cause positive restraint moments. The most significant effect of shrinkage in continuous bridges is the differential shrinkage that occurs because of the difference in type and age of girder and deck concrete. Differential shrinkage between the precast girder and the deck typically causes negative res03int moments.

  • The Prestressed concrete girder bridges(PSC girder bridges), consisting of prestressed concrete girders and cast-in-place deck slabs, are sensitive to creep and shrinkage of concrete. Shrinkage and creep produce additional internal forces md deformations in PSC girder bridges. The long-term behavior of the PSC girder bridges depends on time-dependent properties of materials, amount of prestressing, methods and sequences of construction and age at loading. The purpose of this study is to predict the long-term behavior of PSC girder bridge. For this purpose, Computer program for Time-dependent analysis of PSC girder bridge has been developed. thereafter, Time-dependent analysis using developed computer program was carried out about 3-span continuous PSC girder bridges. Various construction timing sequences were used for parametric study.

  • The development of external prestressing methods has been one of the major trends in the concrete bridge constructions over the past decades. One of the promising methods to enhance the flexural strength of a externally prestressed girder is to place the tendons with large eccentricities. The analysis and design of composite girders prestressed by external tendons involve difficulties related mainly to the position of anchorages and the construction sequences. This study was conducted on the concrete bridges reinforced by the continuous girders and the external prestressing. The test results in this study showed that the external prestressing of a composite girder increased the range of the elastic behavior, reduced deflections, increased ultimate strength, and added to the redundancy by providing the multiple stress paths.

  • The objective of this research is to verify the code-specified girder distribution factors (GDF) for continuous steel girder bridges by field testing. Previous analytical study revealed that current GDF's specified in AASHTO Standard and AASHTO LRFD, developed for the simple span bridges are conservative even for the continuous bridges. In this study, field tests were performed for three continuous steel girder bridges to validate the GDF's specified in the AASHTO codes. The results show that the code values are conservative when compared with field tests, and in some cases, too conservative. Also, strains measured from the field test are, in most cases, smaller than those expected from the analytical results. However, when the GDF's from measured strains are compared with GDF's from analysis, it is found that the analysis results are not conservative, and in some instance, the analytical results underestimate the actual GDF's, which can lead to a groundless notion of safety. In one case, test results showed that the code GDF's specified in AASHTO LRFD is too permissive. As a result, it is found that GDF's specified in AASHTO LRFD should be used with careful reservation.

  • The inelastic design of the three-span continuous composite plate girder with consideration of moment redistribution over the interior pier is performed using the LRFD method. The design of the girder section, based on the inelastic method, is compared with that by the conventional elastic design. The length of the center span for the three-span continuous bridge ranges from 40m to 70m and the relative ratio of the span length is assumed to be 4:5:4. Although the AASHTO- LRFD specifications are applied in the design of the composite girder, the recently proposed new design live load is used. After determining the maximum positive and negative sections by the elastic design for various limit states, the amount of moment redistributed to the maximum positive moment section is calculated. With the increased design moment due to moment redistribution from the interior pier, the maximum positive section designed by the elastic method is checked for the strength limit state and the service limit state. The maximum negative moment section is redesigned by reducing the size of the steel girder relative to the section designed by the elastic method and the new section is checked for the service limit state. Based on the design results for the five bridges considered in this study, it is estimated that about 23% of steel can be saved in the interior pier section if it is designed by the inelastic method compared with that designed by the elastic method.

  • Cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges are divided into three cross sections of non-composite, partially composite, and fully composite sections, according to their composite characteristics. The Korean provision for the partially and fully composite sections specifies general usage of the stud of shear connectors, whereas the one for the non-composite section specifies empirical usage of slab anchors. However, the actual behavior of the cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors is close not to the non-composite action, but to the partially composite action. Therefore analytical and experimental studies on partial composites of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors are performed in this study. Intial stiffness of the slab anchor is obtained by the experimental study for the first time, and the composite characteristic of simple-span and two-span continuous steel-plate girder bridges is investigated by the finite element analyses for the second time. Based on the obtained initial stiffness, the reduction effect of tensile stresses in the concrete-slab on the intermediate support of the continuous bridge is also considered herein.

  • The design comparison and flexural reliability analysis of continuous span composite plate girder bridges are performed. The girders are designed by the methods of allowable stress design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD). For the LRFD design, the design specification under development mainly by KBRC, based on AASHTO-LRFD specification in case of steel structures, is applied with the newly proposed design live load which has been developed by analyzing domestic traffic statistics from highways and local roads. For the ASD based design, the current KHBDC code with DB-24 and DL-24 live loads is used. The longest span length for the 3-span continuous bridges with span arrangement ratio of 4:5:4 is assumed to be from 30 m to 80 m. The amount of steel, performance ratios, and governing design factors for the sections designed by the ASD and LRFD methods are compared. In the reliability analysis for the flexural failure of the sections designed by two methods, the statistical properties on flexural resistance based on the yield strength statistics for over 16,000 domestic structural steel samples are applied.

  • This study proposes useful analysis models for automatic design of orthotropic steel deck bridges. For the selection of the best or the most proper analysis model this paper presents various analysis models based on grillage model, which are then compared with each other in terms of reliability of analysis, computing time and effectiveness. Also the selected analysis models are compared with Pelikan-Esslinger method well-known for orthotropic steel deck bridge analysis. The effectiveness of proposed analysis models is demonstrated by means of a numerical example that is a three-span continuous (60m+80m+60m=200m) orthotropic steel-box girder bridge.
