  • Acoustic design parameters of a Helmholtz resonator are studied experimentally and numerically for acoustic stability in a model acoustic tube. According to standard acoustic-test procedures, acoustic-pressure signals are measured. Quantitative acoustic properties of sound absorption coefficient are evaluated and thereby, the acoustic damping capacity of the resonator is characterized. Helmholtz resonator on spring-damper system use were understanding for acoustic damping. The length of orifice and the volume of cavity of resonator are selected as design parameters for tuning of the resonator. Acoustic- damping capacity of the resonator increases with its cavity volume. And orifice length as increases with acoustic damping capacity was decreased.

  • An accurate thrust measurement is one of the critical paths to the successful test and evaluation program of small liquid propulsion engines. This study describes the design factors for the development of thrust measurement system (TMS) as well as manufacturing practice of TMS hardware. We investigate characteristics of the TMS and its performance through hot-firing test of small liquid engine in a vacuum test cell which is capable of simulating 100,000 ft of altitude or higher. For performance test of TMS, we measure thrusts by changing propellant injection pressure at steady state firing mode as well as at pulse firing mode. Measured eigen frequency of the TMS is 67 Hz. Linearity test of the TMS shows good performance with less than 0.5% of linearity error.

  • A main oxidizer shutoff valve controls the supply of the oxidizer flow into the combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine. This shutoff valve also carries out the pre-chilling of oxidizer supply lines by permitting recycling flow for stable transient start of the engine. In the present paper, the flow tests for the recycling line of the valve were conducted in order to evaluate the cooling performance of the main oxidizer shutoff valve. In addition, cryogenic life-cycle tests were performed with an assumption of the increase of spring constant with increasing valve operating times due to ductile-brittle transition effects.

  • Thrust is one of the crucial performance parameter of a combustion chamber in the combustion chamber development test. So it is very important to measure an accurate thrust. Thrust calibration test was performed to identify the system characteristics, resistance and linearity of a vertical thrust measurement system(TMS) for accurate thrust measurement. It has been found 6.9% ~ 8.6% errors between the measured thrust by TMS calibration equations and theoretical thrust. It has been confirmed that the TMS calibration is necessary to be performed with the propellant lines connected to the combustion chamber for accurate thrust measurement.

  • A comprehensive understanding is given for the hot-firing test results, which were obtained throughout the verification program of mono-propellant hydrazine thrusters producing 0.95 lbf (4.2 Newtons) of nominal steady-state thrust at an inlet pressure of 350 psia (2.41 ㎫). The scrutiny is made in terms of thrust and temperature behavior of steady state firing mode at the given propellant injection pressures of 400, 250, 100, and 50 psi. Engineering philosophy of data measurement and reduction is shortly mentioned, too.

  • This paper presents an achieving method of highly progressive pressure gradient to enhance the missile ejection system's performance by using a gas generator. To obtain a stable burning, the decrease of a grain's L/D is proposed except making radial holes through the grain. New approach by applying adjustment of a grain's L/D reduces the maximum acceleration level by about 33% than that of reference model.

  • In this study, a numerical approach was utilized to observe the phenomena in the ground combustion test of a gas generator for a ducted rocket with a plunger-type flow control device. The design factors were also identified through the analysis. It was observed that the pressure increase without the adhesion of the combustion product at the discharge pipe was quite similar to the analysis assuming a cone-shaped erosive burning effect. The pressure increase in most cases was similar to the analysis results when assuming the change in discharge pipe area due to the adhesion of combustion products. Moreover, it was also established that for a given grain shape and discharge flow area, the effect of the adhesion of combustion products has a significant effect on the combustion chamber pressure for cases over n=0.45.

  • An experimental study on a fuel-rich gas generator was carried out. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed and installed in the injector head, which significantly influences the combustion performance. In the paper, the characteristics of combustion stability are inspected by the parametric varations such as changing length and diameter of a combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental results show that as a resonant frequency took place in a high region, the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished, however, the combustion instability could not be suppressed perfectly.

  • The pulse gun device is designed to identify the transverse pressure wave propagation/damping mechanism into the combustion flow field and in the combustion chamber according to the arrangement of multiple injectors. The manufactured pulse gun was tested to verify operability at the target combustion pressure and control of the pressure wave intensity. Gas nitrogen was used to pressurize the high-pressure tube and an OHP film of $100{\mu}m$ thickness was used for the diaphragm. To check the speed and intensity of the pressure waves, the dynamic and static pressure were measured using the pressure transducer. The performance test confirmed that the manufactured pulse gun can generate pressure waves with transverse characteristics that can be controled for strength depending on the supply pressure.

  • A study was conducted to apply open-loop control to the combustion instability in a dump combustor using gaseous hydrocarbon fuels. Control power and frequency were varied by employing a loudspeaker under combustion conditions with similar characteristic chemistry times of the fuels. In the case of open-loop control where the frequency was identical to the combustion instability frequency, the open-loop control power affected the control performance. Results obtained from conducted open-loop control tests, where the frequency was different from the combustion instability frequency, show that setting the open-loop control frequency similar to the combustion instability frequency is effective.
