  • Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) has been focused as a promising power source, which can replace a diesel engine regarding as major source of air pollution by the ship, due to high efficiency and eco-friendly. High operating temperature of SOFC is enable to secure of high efficiency, use various fuels and no need of high priced catalyst, but it may damage to components of SOFC. Therefore temperature control system has to be designed and validated before employing the fuel cell system for securing high efficiency and reliability. In this paper, instead of using typical method to validate performance of the controller, which consumes high cost and time, performance validation system using Hardware-in-the-loop simulation was developed and validated performence of the designed temperature controller for SOFC system.

  • Problem of greenhouse gases associated with global warming and the world rise in fuel oil prices due to the depletion of fossil fuel has attracted attention. For this reason, maritime transport business, has shown interest in green-ship technology to reduce the consumption of fuel and reduce greenhouse gas for environmental protection. Power system of the ship is one of the most important factors for safe operation. Therefore, at design of ship power system, most of existing vessel used comparative large capacity generator in order to respond peak load such as bow thruster, crane and etc. In the navigation of ship, marine generators most would be operated at low load operation. In the low load operation of the generation rate of 50% or less, the operation efficiency of the generator it deteriorated, to consume more fuel oil. It also, it means that adversely effect the life of the generator. In this paper, studied how to apply for a secondary battery in container ship that relatively frequent arrival and departure in port. As a result, in order to apply the secondary battery to increase the operating efficiency of the generator during the voyage, it was confirmed that it is possible to reduce fuel consumption.

  • The electrification of the waste heat of fuel cell is necessary to enhance the efficiency of fuel cell system. For this purpose, the SOFC/ST(Solid oxide fuel cell/Steam turbine) hybrid system is suitable. The purpose of this work is to predict the performance of methane fueled SOFC/ST hybrid power system and to analyze the influence of operating temperature of stack, current density of stack, combustor outlet gas temperature, and boiler outlet gas temperature. According to the analysis, it is proved that making the best use of the waste heat of stack and minimizing the fuel consumption of combustor are essential for the high-efficiency of SOFC/ST hybrid system.

  • Strengthened regulations for atmospheric emissions from ships have created a need for new and alternative power systems that offer low emissions and high energy efficiency. Recently, new types of propulsion power systems, such as fuel cell systems that use hydrogen as an energy source, have gained serious consideration in applications requiring emission control. The purpose of this work is to certify the availability of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems equipped with recycled steam reforming fuel processors, and to compare their performance with that of extra steam reforming systems. The results demonstrate that the recycled steam reforming system has a slightly lower cell voltage and higher energy efficiency than the extra steam reforming system.
