  • Mid of 1980s witnessed the beginning of a new trend regarding the elderly as the Third Age Group, which is capable of positive selection for their later life. These changes are caused not only by the rising cost of caring them as the dependent to the society, but also by paradigm shift from the clinical and biomedical model to political economy and critical gerontology. The paradigm shift is based on the social constructionism as a perspective on the later life. In this communication the development of social constructionism is reviewed as an approach on the living environment for later life through literature survey. Emphases were made on the anti-ageism instead of ageism in the analysis of the social constructionism perspective for living environment in later life. Individual practice, influencing the practice of others, influencing agency policy, and developing theory were addressed and emphasized for the practice of anti-ageism. This study found the importance of the development of the social constructionism perspective on the study and practice regarding living environment for ‘the Third Age’ in Korean situation.

  • This study aims to overcome the limitations of prior studies that have failed to take into account the impact of psycho-social factors on the employment of people with disabilities as well as the differences in employment by life stage. This study employs a research model that includes psycho-social factors along with human capital to examine how the determinants of employment differ for the disabled by life stage. The analysis in this study takes the form of logistic regression, using data from the fifth wave of the Korea Welfare Panel Survey. Analysis results show that the employment probability of young people with disabilities is significantly associated with their experience of discrimination, with their chance of employment decreasing when they have more experience of discrimination. Middle-aged people with disabilities are more likely to be employed when they have a lower level of education, a better health condition and a higher level of labor ability. For the disabled elderly, their labor ability is the only factor affecting their possibility of employment; they have a higher chance of getting a job when they have a higher level of labor ability.

  • The purpose of this article is to examine the conflicts and political implications of the various linguistic practices concerning how to call old age, and to illuminate the reasons for these conflicts in the cultural sphere. Recently, the issue of proper ways of calling old age has become problematized. As a result, new ways of addressing older people are being devised, which signifies the marginalization of old age. These new ways of calling older people, however, are not settling the problems. It is because the ageist, gender-discriminatory, status-conscious culture of Korea marginalizes the meaning of the various ways of calling old age. As the otherization of old age deepens in the cultural realm, old age becomes a site where various features of marginality accumulate. The academy and the professionals need to be aware of the political implications of the various ways of calling old age, and to strive to surmount discriminatory linguistic practices.

  • This study utilized test day of somatic cell score data of dairy cattle from 2000 to 2004. The number of data used were 124,635 of first parity, 134,308 of second parity, 77,862 of third parity, 41,787 of forth parity and 37,412 of fifth parity. The data was analyzed by least square mean method using GLM to estimate the effects of calving year, age, lactation stage, parity and season on somatic cell score. Variance component estimation using test day model was determined by using expectation maximization algorithm- restricted maximum likelihood (EM-REML) analysis method. In each parity, somatic cell score was low for younger group and was relatively high in older groups. Likewise, for lactation stage, the score was low in early-lactation and high in late-lactation in first parity and second parity. Nevertheless, for the third, fourth and fifth parity, however, high somatic cell score was observed in mid-lactation. Generally, the score was high in the peak. Although in fourth and fifth parity, the score was low in late-lactation. Environmental effect of season, somatic cell score was generally low from September to November for all parities. The score was high between June and August when the milk production is usually low. The heritability in each parity were 0.05, 0.09, 0.10, 0.05 and 0.05 for parity 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, respectively. Genetic variance value was estimated to be high in second, third and fifth parity in early-lactation and to be low in first and forth parity.

  • In order to examine differential mortality, the life tables for the insured persons in national pension scheme were estimated by sex and types of coverage(the insured in workplaces vs. the insured in rural areas). The averages of 1994-1996 data are used for insured in workplaces, but 1996 data are used for insured in rural areas. Life expectancies at the age of 18 are 59.5 years and 67.2 years each for insured males and females and thus 7.7 years longer for females than males in workplaces. Sex difference in mortality reduces as age increases, and more rapidly at younger ages than old ages. For insured in rural areas, life expectancies at the age of 18 are 51.4 years and 61.1 years each for insured males and females and thus sex difference is 9.7 years. The greater sex difference in mortality in rural areas can be explained by sex selective migration. The difference of life expectancy between insured in workplaces and insured in rural areas is 8.1 years for males, and 6.1 years for females. Because rural-urban difference in educational attainment is greater for males than females, the greater difference in life expectancy is observed for males than females.

  • This study explored the influencing factors on the depression of immigrant school-adolescents. It made use of family factors, school factors, and multi-cultural factors to verify the influencing variables of depression in school grade. Data were drawn from the National Survey of Multi-cultural families 2015 and analyzed t-test and chi square test and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS Win 21.0. First, school violence experience was the most important factor on the affecting depression in elementary school students. Multi-cultural family identity was the main cause of depression in middle school students, and school study difficulty in high school students. Second, major variables on the affecting depression in all groups were identified as social discrimination experience. These results implied the differentiated support by ages was asked for the stable settlement of adolescents. Experience of social discrimination was a common factor raising the level of depression in all groups. Therefore, we should be done active intervention in school environment.

  • This study examines whether educational differentials in health are greater in more recent cohorts in Korea. This study utilizes latent growth-curve modeling to examine intercohort trends in health for three educational subgroups, using panel data (2003-2007) based on a national probability sample of 9,639 adults. Among young and middle adults with less than a high school diploma, the 4-year newer cohort demonstrated better health at the same age, implying a favorable trend. Middle and older adults with college level and a high school diploma also enjoyed favorable trends in health. This study suggests the possibility that the education-based overall disparity in health is increasing, but there are variations in the trend depending on age group. The increasing disparity mainly occurred among older adults.

  • This study aims to explore the relationship between onset drinking age and the current Body Mass Index (BMI) level stratified by sex. This study used the data of Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) 2019, of which 206,987 participants included in study populations for multivariable binomial logistic regression model. The study results show the evidence that the early age of onset alcohol consumption had significantly associated with abnormal BMI status in adult male. These results could be explained by high alcohol consumption and sex difference in social atmosphere which encourages men to drink more. Our findings suggest the need to prevent problem drinking for reducing the long-term side effects of health.
