  • We outline a process for estimating Cole-Cole parameters from time-domain induced polarization (IP) data. The IP transients are all inverted to 2D Cole-Cole earth models that include resistivity, chargeability, relaxation time, and the frequency exponent. Our inversion algorithm consists of two stages. We first convert the measured voltage decay curves into time series of current-on time apparent resistivity to circumvent the negative chargeability problem. As a first step, a 4D inversion recovers the resistivity model at each time channel that increases monotonically with time. The desired intrinsic Cole-Cole parameters are then recovered by inverting the resistivity time series of each inversion block. In the second step, the Cole-Cole parameters can be estimated readily by setting the initial model close to the true value through a grid search method. Finally, through inversion procedures applied to synthetic data sets, we demonstrate that our algorithm can image the Cole-Cole earth models effectively.

  • Compared with the separated inversion of electromagnetic (EM) and seismic data, a joint inversion using both EM and seismic data reduces the uncertainty and gives the opportunity to use the advantage of each data. Seismic fullwaveform inversion allows velocity information with high resolution in complicated subsurface. However, it is an indirect survey which finds the structure containing oil and gas. On the other hand, marine controlled-source EM (mCSEM) inversion can directly indicate the oil and gas using different EM properties of hydrocarbon with marine sediments and cap rocks whereas it has poor resolution than seismic method. In this paper, we have developed a joint EM inversion algorithm using a cross-gradient technique. P-wave velocity structure obtained by full-waveform inversion using plane wave encoding is used as structure constraints to calculate the cross-gradient term in the joint inversion. When the jointinversion algorithm is applied to the synthetic data which are simulated for subsea reservoir exploration, images have been significantly improved over those obtained from separate EM inversion. The results indicate that the developed joint inversion scheme can be applied for detecting reservoir and calculating the accurate oil and gas reserves.

  • Seismic tomography has been widely used as high resolution subsurface imaging techniques in engineering applications. Although most of the techniques have been using travel time inversion, waveform method is being driven forward owing to the progress of computational environments. Although full-waveform inversion method has been known as the best method in terms of model resolving power without high-frequency restriction and weak scattering approximation, it has practical disadvantage that it is apt to get stuck in local minimum if the initial guess is far from the actual model and it consumes so much time to calculate. In this study, 2-D full-waveform inversion algorithm in acoustic medium is developed, which uses result of traveltime tomography as initial model. From the application on synthetic data, it is proved that this approach can efficiently reduce the problem of conventional approaches: our algorithm shows much faster convergence rate and improvement of model resolution. Result of application on physical modeling data also shows much improvement. It is expected that this algorithm can be applicable to real data.

  • This study introduces a DC resistivity inversion method that incorporates structural and inequality constraints to enhance the resolution of resistivity inversions, and presents sample inversion results with these constraints. In the constrained inversions, a base model is constructed from a layered model through interpretation of other geophysical data. Inversion tests establish that both the structural and inequality constraints produce better resistivity models than the unconstrained inversion. However, the inequality inversion not only reproduces the exact layered structure of the background, it reproduces conductive anomalies at a depth of ~ 10 m when an inexact base model of electrical resistivity is used.

  • It is difficult to obtain high-resolution images by 3D gravity inversion, because the problem is extremely underdetermined - there are too many model parameters. In order to reduce the number of model parameters we propose a 3D gravity inversion scheme utilising Euler deconvolution as a priori information. The essential point of this scheme is the reduction of the nonuniqueness of solutions by restricting the inversion space with the help of Euler deconvolution. We carry out a systematic exploration of the growing body process, but only in the restricted space within a certain radius of the Euler solutions. We have tested our method with synthetic gravity data, and also applied it to a real dataset, to delineate underground cavities in a limestone area. We found that we obtained a more reasonable subsurface density image by means of this combination between the Euler solution and the inversion process.

  • The holistic inversion approach for frequency domain airborne electromagnetic data has previously been employed to simultaneously calibrate, process and invert raw frequency-domain data where prior information was available. Analternative formulation has been developed, which is suitable in the case where explicit prior information is not available. It incorporates: a multi-layer vertically-smooth conductivity model; a simplified bias parameterisation; horizontal smoothing with respect to elevation; and cluster computer parallelisation. Without using any prior data, an inversion of 8.0 million data for 3.4 million parameters yields results that are consistent with independently derived calibration parameters, downhole logs and groundwater elevation data. We conclude that the success of the holistic inversion method is not dependent on a sophisticated conceptual model or the direct inclusion of survey-area specific prior information. In addition, acquisition costs could potentially be reduced by employing the holistic approach which largely eliminates the need for high altitude zero-level measurements.

  • Electric resistivity monitoring was applied to evaluate the soft ground in reclaimed land in order to figure out the applicability of physical prospecting. For this, electrical resistivity monitoring data were acquired for total three months and analyzed those data with independent inversion, time-lapse inversion, and 4D inversion methods. The result was compared for various inversion methods so as to figure out what showed the soft soil most properly. Moreover, drilling and CPT(Cone Penetration Test) data were also used in order to find out if each of those inversion methods could distinguish either bed rock or the soft soil clearly. And according to the result, time-lapse inversion showed less inversion artifacts than independent inversion, so it could indicate the soft soil better. If data gained for a longer period than three months are used, 4D inversion has been found to be a more efficient analysis method than the time-lapse inversion method. Electrical resistivity monitoring on the soft soil has been found to be a useful method that can analyze the spatio-temporal electric state of the ground serially.

  • Full waveform inversion (FWI) in the field of seismic data processing is an inversion technique that is used to estimate the velocity model of the subsurface for oil and gas exploration. Recently, deep learning (DL) technology has been increasingly used for seismic data processing, and its combination with FWI has attracted remarkable research efforts. For example, DL-based data processing techniques have been utilized for preprocessing input data for FWI, enabling the direct implementation of FWI through DL technology. DL-based FWI can be divided into the following methods: pure data-based, physics-based neural network, encoder-decoder, reparameterized FWI, and physics-informed neural network. In this review, we describe the theory and characteristics of the methods by systematizing them in the order of advancements. In the early days of DL-based FWI, the DL model predicted the velocity model by preparing a large training data set to adopt faithfully the basic principles of data science and apply a pure data-based prediction model. The current research trend is to supplement the shortcomings of the pure data-based approach using the loss function consisting of seismic data or physical information from the wave equation itself in deep neural networks. Based on these developments, DL-based FWI has evolved to not require a large amount of learning data, alleviating the cycle-skipping problem, which is an intrinsic limitation of FWI, and reducing computation times dramatically. The value of DL-based FWI is expected to increase continually in the processing of seismic data.

  • A backcalculation procedure to determine the layer moduli of flexible pavement structure is developed using matrix solution technique. Forward calculation computer program adopted in this backcalculation procedure is SINELA which is one of layered elastic computer programs. Data base system is used as a tool for setting initial seed moduli and depth to virtual bedrock in backcalculation procedure. The validity and applicability of the proposed backcalculation procedure are verified through various numerical model tests. From the results of comparison analysis with FPEDD1, it is found that the proposed procedure gives more efficient and accurate results.
