  • A trajectory control method being capable of singularity avoidance is proposed for a robot and positoner (R-P) system. In the proposed method, the damping factor of the Damped Least Square (DLS) method is adjusted by gradients of trajectory following errors so that the singularity avoidance can be achieved while mimimizing the errors. Two numerical examples are given by employing a Rhino robot with five degrees-of-freedom (d.o.f.) and two d.o.f's, where the method of maximizing the manipulagility the DLS method with a fixd damping factor and the proposed method are compared in terms of trajectory following errors, manipulabilities and joint velocities.

  • A haptic rendering system is proposed for a puncture task of a virtual vertebra model. To build a mesh model from medical images, Delaunay triangulation is applied and physical models are based on elasticity theory. Also, a redundant actuated 6 DOF parallel type haptic device is designed to display large force and to resolve the singularity problem of parallel type mechanisms. Haptic feeling of puncture task and the performance of the proposed haptic device are tested by two puncture task experiments.

  • When the manipulator collides with surroundings, there occurs an impulse. To reduce the impulse, the self motion should maintain the manipulator's position by the minimally effective mass. At this time, we can use the local joint torque minimization algorithm to resolve the redundancy. In this study, to reduce the impulse and damages by the impact between the manipulator and surroundings, new control algorithm for the minimization of the joint torque using the kinetic redundancy and the impact minimization is proposed. It adapts fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm to the conventional local joint torque minimization algorithm. The proposed algorithm is applied to a 3-DOF redundant planar manipulator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works well.

  • In this paper, redundancy resolution of UVMS (underwater vehicle-manipulate. system) is addressed. In general, UVMS has redundant DOFs (degrees of freedom) as many as DOFs of manipulator and these redundant DOFs can be used to optimize the configuration of UVMS while satisfying given tasks. We propose a performance index for redundancy resolution which minimizes the restoring moments of UVMS. The restoring moment can cause unintentional change of poses of UVMS. If the restoring moments remain small, control effort for keeping the poses of UVMS decreases. This means that energy consumption can be reduced by minimizing the restoring moments during conducting tasks. Proposed performance measure is optimized by gradient projection method. Generated trajectories by this redundancy resolution are tracked by robust PID controller. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • Several figures representing velocity transmission from joint space to task space are analyzed and compared with each other. The figures include velocity ellipsoid derived from Jacobian matrix, scaled velocity ellipsoid derived from normalized joint velocities, polytope derived by numerical scaling, and polytopes derived by linear combinations of Jacobian column vectors. The results show that the optimal directions given by the measures are not the same and the conventional velocity ellipsoid is not good choice as optimization measure as far as the moving direction is concerned. Simulation examples for 3 d.o.f. redundant robot manipulators in 2-dimensional task space are given for comparison study.

  • For on-line trajectory planning such as teleoperation it is desirable to keep good manipulability of the robot manipulators since the motion command is not given in advance. To keep good manipulability means the capability of moving any arbitrary directions of task space. An optimization process with different manipulability measures are performed and compared for a redundant robot system moving in 2-dimensional task space, and gives results that the conventional manipulability ellipsoid based on the Jacobian matrix is not good choice as far as the optimal direction of motion is concerned.

  • A new approach based on artificial potential function is proposed for the obstacle avoidance of redundant manipulators. Unlike the so-called "global" path planning method, which requires expensive computation for the path search before the manipulator starts to move, this new approach, "local" path planning, researches the path in real-time using the local distance information. Previous use of artificial potential function has exhibited local minima in some complex environments. This thesis proposes a potential function that has no local minima even for a cluttered environment. This potential function has been implemented for the collision avoidance of a redundant robot in Simulation. The simulation also employ an algorithm that eliminates collisions with obstacles by calculating the repulsive potential exerted on links, based on the shortest distance to object.

  • An efficient sequential computation algorithm of kinematic optimal control is suggested for redundancy resolution of freefloating manipulators. Utilization of minimum principle usually requires involved and tedious procedure of differentiation of Hamiltonian. Due to the constraints of momentum conservation, it is not easy to get exact differential equations of boundary value problem for even relatively simple free-floating manipulator models. To overcome this difficulty, we developed an effective sequential algorithm for the computation of terms appeared in the differential equations. The usefulness of suggested approach is verified by simulation of a planar 3-joints free-floating manipulator.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the kinematics and dynamics of redundant parallel manipulators, and provides design guides for advanced parallel mainpulators with high performance. Three types of redundancies are considered which include the redundancies in serial chain, joint actuation, and parallelism. First, the kinematic and dynamic models of a redundant parallel manipulator are obtained in both joint and Cartesian spaces, and the kinematic and dynamic manipulabilities are defined for the performance evaluation. The effects of the three types of redundancies on the kinematic and dynamic performance of a parallel manipulator are then analyzed and compared, providing a set of guides for the design of advanced parallel manipulators. Finally, the simulation results using planer parallel manipulators are given.
