A Study of Transitional Performance with Change of Inlet Pressure in Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine (액체로켓엔진에서 입구압 변화에 따른 엔진 성능 변화 고찰)

  • In this work it was studied that the effect on sub-component of engine considering change of engine inlet pressure caused by variable acceleration during flight of launcher. Also the transitional performance was predicted according to variable acceleration. Engine inlet pressure was defined as summation of propellant head in tank, ullage pressure and pressure difference of line, etc. Therefore consumption of propellant and acceleration of launcher led to change of engine inlet pressure, which affected on discharge pressure of pumps. This effect changed mass flow rate of gas generator and main combustor hence it was observed that engine performance was changed definitely.

  • The purpose of this paper was to address the methodology of the air flow measurement using duct mach number that was considered area-weighed average obtained by total pressure and temperature measured at engine inlet duct. Without installing boundary rake, the prediction of air flow measurement was discussed. Actual air flow measurement and pressure value using pressure loss through inlet seal were described to improve the reliability and operability of altitude engine test facility.

  • Inlet distortion test was performed at Korea Aerospace Research Institute in order to evaluate the degradation of engine performance under the distorted inlet condition. In this paper, only the inlet pressure distortion was taken into consideration. During the development process of the inlet distortion test technique, variable distortion screen was designed and evaluated under various test conditions to establish the experimental database of distortion for engine test. The result of inlet distortion test for engine shows that the operating point was changed toward the worse direction and the degradation of engine performance by inlet distortion was verified.

  • It was reviewed about the pressure oscillation on the inlet of turbo-pump at the moment of engine startup and shutdown. Specially, This research was performed how much is the effect of PSD(Pogo Suppression Device) about the pressure oscillation on the inlet of turbo-pump at the moment of engine startup and shutdown. For analysis, propellant tank PSD and Engine are modelled with Flowmaster which is the commercial 1D program. As the analysis results, even though the PSD is installed in the pipeline, the pressure drop or rising at the moment of engine startup and shutdown is same compared to the case without PSD. However, it was confirmed that PSD reduces the pressure oscillation of the high frequency band as the original purpose of PSD.

  • The vacuum chamber pressure was investigated according to the second throat exhaust diffuser entrance diameter. The sizes of diffuser entrance were changed three cases, and each case was computed by using CFD. Also in order to relatively compare the vacuum chamber pressure the Euler equation was adopted. According to the results, as the size of diffuser entrance was increased it was observed that the vacuum chamber pressure was decreased.

  • The turbopump of the liquid rocket engine adapts an inducer to minimize the cavitation due to the variations of the propellants supply condition. However, the inducer introduces cavitation instabilities which are well-known problems in the engine development. In this paper, operational characteristics by the cavitation instabilities are analyzed and the reliability of the engine is checked when the first stage engine of the KSLV-II is tested at the low inlet pressure conditions. The characteristic frequencies representing the cavitation instabilities of the LOx pump are clearly found in various high frequency sensor signals around the entire engine in addition to the LOx and fuel pump.

  • Opening characteristics of a main oxidizer shut-off valve at different valve inlet pressures have been experimentally investigated. The pilot pressure at the moment of the valve opening increases linearly with increasing the valve inlet pressure and the increased pilot pressure reduces the valve travel time. As the pilot pressure increases at the moment of valve opening, the time to start opening the valve is delayed resulting in increasing the valve opening time. With the increment of the valve inlet pressure, the valve opening time is mainly determined by the time required for the pilot pressure to start opening the valve. Therefore the design of a pilot gas supply system can readily control the valve inlet pressure at the valve opening as well as the amount of oxidizer supplied to a combustion chamber during the engine startup.

  • 75 tonf liquid rocket engine combustion test was performed at Naro space center Engine Combustion Test Facility for KSLV-II. A gradual pressure drop was observed during off-design combustion test turbopump inlet condition using cooled kerosene at 271 K. It was found that the water content inside kerosene could cause pressure drop at 40 ㎛ grade filter through the water contests analysis of kerosene, kerosene cooling test and dehydration of kerosene.

  • 엔진 배기가스의 동력과 유량이 배기행정의 직전 단계에서 관찰되었다. 배기가스 양을 적당히 조정함으로써 터보 과급의 입구 압력을 증가시킬 수 있었으며 엔진의 흡기, 소기 및 배기과정에서 가스질량과 엔진의 동력, 그리고 터보과급 효과도 감소하였다. 터보 과급장치를 기하학적으로 적절화시킴으로써 싸이클의 동기화 및 동력의 효율이 고려된 열교환 과정의 효율 기준도 제기되었으며 디젤엔진의 연소싸이클을 재수정하는 과정과 터빈의 동역학적 특성도 제시되었다.
