In this study, the shielding rate of major X-ray protective equipment used in the medical environment was calculated using X-ray spectrum data emitted from the diagnostic X-ray generator of The Institute of Physics and Engineering(IPEM) Report-78, and the applicability of radiation protection was investigated. Radiation shielding rates were calculated through reduction rates of air-kerma and total intensity for lead apron (0.3 mmPb), thyroid shield (0.5 mmPb), lead goggles (0.5 mmPb), and lead glass (1.8, 2.7, 3.3 mmPb) used for diagnostic X-ray protection. As a result, the shielding rate calculated as the air kerma reduction rate ranged from 96.31 to 100% at 80 kV, and 90.35 to 100% at 120 kV. In addition, the results of this calculation were well matched with the results of previous studies measuring the actual shielding rate, and it is expected that the X-ray spectrum data of IPEM Report-78 can be used for radiation protection.
As the use of radiation for medical purposes increases, the exposure dose of medical workers is also increasing. To reduce this dose, various studies on changing the shielding material have been conducted. Recently, a new method to reduce the dose at the entrance of the radiation treatment room was proposed by using the photoelectric effect that occurs when the radiation is scattered. Because this method is particularly effective for low-energy photons, in this study, a slit-type structure was proposed as a excellent shielding structure against scattered x-ray in a general photography room, and was evaluated the shielding effect by Monte Carlo simulation. As a result of the calculation, this study found that in the case of a structure in which steel plates with a thickness of 2 mm and a width of 5 cm are stacked at 2 mm intervals, a shielding effect was approximately 99.9% or more, excluding the heights of the floor and the patient where scattering occurs directly.
This study was conducted to reduce the exposure dose to the breast and adjacent organs as the number of Mammography increased. Therefore, it has been designed a shield in lead, bismuth + tungsten, and bismuth that does not require to be equipped by the patient, in which each type of shield was compared and analyzed of radiation exposure dose to breast, thyroid, and eye. Using a mammography machine, optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter(OSLD) was inserted to bilateral breast, thyroid, and eye of a dosimetry phantom to measure dose radiated onto the phantom. Shielding device was made in different thickness of 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm and dose evaluation was performed by measuring the dose while using lead, bismuth, and bismuth + tungsten prosthesis. When each shields combined with shielding device, were compared of dose, all showed similar does reduction in the dose to breast, thyroid, and eye in both cranialcaudal and mediolateraloblique view. Based on the current study, bismuth and bismuth + tungsten can replace conventional lead shield and it is anticipated to safely and conveniently reduce radiation exposure to breast, thyroid, and eye with the shield that does not require to be equipped.
Radiation protection equipment has widely used to protect human body from radiations, for example X-ray and gamma ray. The material of the radiation protection equipment is mainly lead (Pb) which has brought out lead poisoning and pollution when the equipment is fallen into disuse. This problem makes research and development find new Pb-free materials for use of radiation protection. Manufacturing and evaluation processes for developing those material were carried out repletely until obtaining the performance of protection rate. In this study, combination possibility of shielding material was studied using Geant4 monte carlo simulation. X-ray tube under the same condition in the real measurement of the protection rate was simulated, and X-ray tube spectrum was obtained. The X-ray tube spectrum was applied to study on the protection rate and lead equivalent. The porosity effect was simulated, and was one of key factors to determine protection rate or lead equivalent in radiation protection sheet of Pb-free.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate feasibility of Vertical Multileaf Collimator for determination of irradiation size using Vertical Multileaf Collimator and lead block to determine 4 different irradiation shape in case of Co-60 gamma-ray and 6 MV X-ray. We chose ion chamber, glass dosimeter and EBT chromic film to compare with Vertical Multileaf Collimator results and lead block results. In case of Co-60 gamma-ray and 6 MV X-ray, the central axis point dose normalized at reference field of lead block with ion chamber results for Vertical Multileaf Collimator were estimated higher than lead block about 5.1%, 4.2%. In case of Co-60 gamma-ray, the central axis point dose normalized at reference field of lead block with glass dosimeter results for Vertical Multileaf Collimator were estimated higher than lead block about 2.2%, 7.8%, 7.2%, 4.0% for reference, circle, triangle, cross field, respectively. In case of 6 MV X-ray, the central axis point dose normalized at reference field of lead block with glass dosimeter results for Vertical Multileaf Collimator were estimated higher than lead block about 6.7%, 6.2%, 3.8%, 6.2% for reference, circle, triangle, cross field, respectively. The results of EBT chromic film, Vertical Multileaf Collimator of penumbra size for all irradiation shape was smaller than lead block of those size that 2.0~3.5 mm for Co-60 gamma-ray, 0.5~1.0 mm for 6 MV X-ray. The results from this study, radiation treatment volume that results in shielding block can be minimized. In addition, during radiation treatment for 2, 3-dimensional radiation therapy using a Vertical Multileaf Collimator of this survey can be used to determine variety of irradiation fields.
The purposes of this report are to evaluate whether lead ball and steel ball could be used as protective material of radiation and to acquire physical data of them for protecting 4-10 MV X-ray beams. Lead balls of diameter 2.0~2.5mm or steel balls of diameter 1.5~2.0 mm were filled in an acrylic box of uniform width. An MV radiograph of metal balls in a box were taken to ascertain uniformity of ball distribution in the box. Average density of metal ball and linear attenuation coefficient of metal balls for 4~10 MV X -rays were measured. At the time of measurement of linear attenuation coefficient, Farmer ionization chamber was used and to minimize the scatter effect, distance between the ball and the ionization chamber was 70 cm and field size was 5.5cm${\times}$5.5cm. For comparison, same parameters of lead and steel plates were measured. The distribution of metal balls was uniform in the box. The density of a mixture of lead-air was 6.93g/cm$^3$, 0.611 times density of lead, and the density of a mixture of steel-air was 4.75g/cm$^3$, 0.604 times density of steel. Half-value layers of a mixture of lead-air were 1.89 cm for 4 MV X-ray, 2.07 cm for 6 MV X-ray and 2.16 cm for 10 MV X-ray, and approximately 1.64 times of HVL of lead plate. Half-value layers of a mixture of steel-air were 3.24 cm for 4 MV X-ray, 3.70 cm for 6 MV X-ray and 4.15 cm for 10 MV X-ray, and approximately 1.65 times of HVL of lead plate. Metal balls can be used because they could be distributed evenly. Average densities of mixtures of lead-air and steel-air were 6.93g/cm$^3$, 4.75g/cm$^3$ respectively and approximately 1.65 times of densities of lead and steel. Product of density and HVL for a mixture of metal-air are same as the metal.
During paranasal sinus X-ray examinations in children, the radiological technologist's thyroid shield is often not implemented to shorten the examination time. This study measured the radiation exposure before and after the implementation of thyroid shielding by analyzing the difference in radiation exposure, the radiological technologist's could receive depending on the actual thyroid shielding. In the left TLD, when thyroid shielding was not performed(N), the radiation exposure dose(mSv) was 2.869 for the depth dose[Hp(10)] and 2.886 for the surface dose[H(3)], and when thyroid shielding was performed(Y), the Hp(10) was 0.033 and the H(3) was 0.034. In the right TLD, when thyroid shielding was not performed(N), the radiation exposure dose was 3.149 for Hp(10) and 3.137 for H(3), and when thyroid shielding was performed, the Hp(10) of (Y) was 0.013 and the H(3) was 0.015. The differences in the overall exposure dose measurement values are all statistically significant (p<0.05). The difference in radiation dose between when thyroid shielding was not performed and when thyroid shielding was performed was more than 99.2% in both cases, indicating a high radiation shielding rate.
The purposed of this study were measured the radiation exposure of patients and workers by generators, and the protection state for radiation facilities. The subject of the study by X-ray generators in university hospitals of capital area, we measured the maximum irradiation condition of 80 kVp, 200 mA, 0.1 second in the control entrance, control room window, entrance of radiography, adjacent site. The leakage dose per week was which the control entrance was 0.11 mR/week, control room window was 0.15 mR/week, entrance of radiography was 0.12 mR/week and adjacent site was 0.06 mR/week with X-ray unit the mean And the leakage mean dose was 0.11 mR/week. Diagnostic X-ray tubes must ensure that the leakage radiation in the maximum leakage dose in week emitted by the tube outside the useful beam does not exceed certain levels provided by standards.
This study made a tentative estimation of the shielding rate of barium compound by thickness through monte carlo simulation to apply medical radiation shielding products that can replace existing lead. Barium sulfate($BaSO_4$) was used for the shielding material, and thickness of the shielding material specimen was simulated from 0.1 mm to 5 mm by applying $15{\times}15cm^2$ of specimen area, $4.5g/cm^3$ of density of barium sulfate, and $11.34g/cm^3$ density of lead. Entered source was simulated with 10kVp Step in consecutive X-ray energy spectrum(40 kVp ~ 120 kVp). Absorption probability in 40 kVp ~ 60 kVp showed same shielding rate with lead in 3 mm ~ 5 mm of thickness, but it was identified that under 2 mm, the shielding rate was a bit lower than the existing lead shielding material. Also, the shielding rate in 70 kVp ~ 120 kVp energy band showed similar performance as the existing lead shielding material, but it was tentatively estimated as fairly low shielding rate below 0.5 mm. This study estimated the shielding rate of barium compound as the thickness function of x-ray energy band for medical radiation through monte carlo simulation, and made comparative analysis with existing lead. Also, this study intended to verify application validity of the x-ray shielding material for medical radiation of pure barium sulfate. As a result, it was estimated that the shielding effect was 95% higher than the existing lead 1.5 mm in at least 2 mm thickness of barium compound in medical radiation energy band 70 kVp ~ 120 kVp, and this result is considered valid to be provided as a base data in weight lightening production of radiation shielding product for medical radiation.
A immobilizing device that is essential for correct lung and lens shielding with homogenous dose distribution in fractionated total body irradiation was developed and it's efficiency was evaluated. The main frame was made of stainless steel bar (5 cm in diameter) to withstand up to 230 cm in height and 100 kg in weight to prevent any injury even in unconsciousness condition. The saddle was designed to adjust the body weight and hight of standing patients. Chest and back supporter were made of 1 cm acryl which could fix the lung block and cassette holder. Leather and sponge pedding were used for head rest to keep patients comfortable. The device was strongly fixed by specially designed bolts on the bottom panel which was made of 1 cm stainless steel and 10 cm thick wooden board. Precise manipulation ($\pm$2 mm) was possible by upper two pulleys and side handles. Average four minutes twenty five seconds were needed for exact setting in fractionated TBI. No significant difference of lung block location on repeated verification films was confirmed and relatively homogeneous dose distribution was measured in rando phantom experiments and patient treatments ($\pm$5%). This immobilizing device was very efficient to keep correct position of patients, which is essential for better result and less complication in fractionated TBI.
